Looks like the leafs are trying to get rid of McCabe as well which could be harder than it sounds - he's got 3 years left on his contract with 6 million next year and 4 million for the next 2 years

Good idea esp now that Pittsburgh has gotten rid of both Malone and Roberts.

Looks like Tampa is toughening up!

I doubt Sundin is going to the Habs - my money's on the Leafs or the Rangers.

The Leafs have gutted whatever team they had. No more Tucker, Raycroft, Wellwood and now, possible Bryan McCabe. There's no way Sundin will return to the Maple Laughs after all that. I think the Habs are still in the mix, and it all depends on what happens between Jagr and the Rangers.

Sure Toronto is in the rebuilding phase but winning the Cup doesn't necessarily seem like it's most important thing to Sundin.

I would be very, very surprised to see the Habs acquire him, but how I would love it. Kovalev, Tanguay and Sundin

Sundin would be a good pickup for Montreal (well duh, he'd be a good pickup for anybody). The Habs need a proven guy that they can rely on and while Sundin is getting older he still can be that guy...even if he doesn't put up big scoring he's a guy who requires attention by the opposing D. With Mats on the roster he'll draw the other club's best checkers, opening things up for the Kostitsyns, Koivu, Kovalev etc.

I think Mats could do well in Montreal...he might bring them closer to this kind of thing:

Dan Cleary, bringing the Cup to Newfoundland today. Our first-ever Stanley Cup winning player. Hundreds showed up at the airport, and there's a huge Canada Day thing for him tomorrow in his hometown. I thought about making my way out to see it, but I've just decided that I'm much too lazy.

Poor Mats...he must have Cup-winning hallucinations at night...or when he's playing.

Yeah you have to feel for the guy, he was one of the last guys traded out of Quebec before they got to CO and won. Didn't they trade him for Wendel Clark? And I think they made a 3-way deal with Jersey and the Isles and ended up with Claude Lemieux but not sure, this was like 15 years ago

That's pretty much how it went down.

I don't feel bad for Mats, seems like he's happy in Toronto, and playing for that management group, he certainly had to know in advance that he wouldn't be placed in the best situation to win a Cup. He had his chance to be traded to a contender this year and didn't take it, so he's gotta be happy with the Laffs, somehow.

Unrestricted free agency begins today

It's looking unlikely Sundin is coming to Montreal though
My $'s on him returning to the Leafs.

According to TSN, the Canucks have offered Mats Sundin a two-year, $20-million contract.

Can someone remind me again why we lost a year because of a lockout?
