normally i feel bad for hockey players with head injuries, but when you square up to fight a giant russian who's got 14 years and 50 pounds on you, you might just be asking to get knocked the fuck out.

you know what's a great idea when it's game 7 and you desperately need to score some goals? it probably isn't giving your best offensive player only 18 minutes of ice time.

i love all the whining and moaning from vegas players and fans about how their season was "stolen" from them by one bad call. they blew a 3-1 series lead and had a 3-0 lead with 10 minutes left in game 7, and then on the penalty (which really wasn't that bad of a call and would have been a double minor anyways at a minimum) gave up four goals in five minutes, but yea sure it's totally the ref's fault that your season is over.

Damn I was really hoping the only call you got right was your own team’s exit.

I didn’t do so bad, all things considered. I mean, lost my cup champ, but did very well for myself in the West.

Also WOW the nhl apologized to Vegas for THAT, but didn’t say shit when Trocheck got tripped in New York with a minute left on a Panther lead?

I mean, good that the NHL held the refs accountable, but seldom is there not enough time to reverse the effects of a bad call. The only bad calls that deserve apologies are those that are either near or at the end of a game.

i don't buy that the league apologized for that. as far as i can tell the only person saying that is the vegas GM. though he seems to be the only person on the team that is actually an adult right now so who really knows.

i'm so sick of this team's (and their fans) whining about this. there's no disputing that eakins cross-checked him - that's a penalty. there's no disputing that the hit drew blood - that's four minutes, automatically. yes calling it a major was a mistake, but if you go out and work your ass off to kill the penalty like you're fucking supposed to, it doesn't matter. but apparently the team and their fan base refuse to accept that letting in four goals in five minutes in the third period of game 7 (after losing two consecutive elimination games before that) might actually be the fault of the players on the ice.

i really liked vegas last year but no longer. they fucking choked HARD and are acting like a peewee team over it. it's pathetic.

I buy it. The NHL definitely has a strong bias towards Vegas. They want it to be successful. They know that the league succeeds when Vegas succeeds.

I get the palpable frustration in the postgame, because that major was completely the result of San Jose talking them into it, combined with the injury to Pavelski. They didn't see what happened, which was a pretty common two minute minor. Eakin didn't do anything particularly malicious, Pavelski just fell awkwardly towards another player who knocked him down.

That said, yeah, get over it. If you let that linger, you're entering "Cubs fans obsessing over Bartman" territory.

come to think of it this situation is surprisingly similar to the cubs/bartman incident.

at least referees are somewhat used to being scapegoated for a team's failures. it happened to me at least once a week when i reffed peewee and bantam house league games as a 17 year-old and at times the abuse could get pretty vicious - there was one time i actually thought some 45 year olds were going to jump me in the parking lot after the game because somehow they were able to tell better than me from the top of the bleachers at other end of the arena with absolute certainty that a puck did not cross the line even though i was literally standing over the net at the time and clearly saw it go in. the police had to come escort me and the other refs out of the arena to our cars, over a non-competitive house-league game between 14 year olds. i got inured to it pretty quick, though i kinda burned out after a few years and stopped reffing when i went to university. glad it isn't being heaped on some poor random fan this time, i suppose.
