Well I mean there's more than just that... Crawford and Bartlett... all of the bullpen...

I see no point in going after Manny and whatshisJesusFace. Perhaps... maybe they just dont want to lose the already struggling attendance numbers, so they went and got 'big names'?

...or maybe they saw the opportunity to get a 4 or 5 WAR upgrade for really cheap and took it? Why wouldn't they try to field the best team possible? Especially when those two guys were cheap.

As a fan of a perrenial losing team (the Florida Panthers), it's become so systematic in my mind that in order to reset the lower you go the further it will help in the future.

I see no reason that the Rays, who look like a middle-of-the-pack team, are trying to add players after subtracting (but not adding enough).

I'm not sayin that the Rays should be shooting for the bottom, dont take it that way.

I'm just saying that they shouldn't have made some of the subtractions to begin with. Obviously some of them like Crawford... wasn't there choice.

I mean, they're keeping hope... I guess you never know... but on paper they've gotten substantially worse IMO.

Well, you made Garza seem like the important piece. Which he isn't. He was expendable to the Rays. So why not take that money and turn it into something useful? It's a long season. A lot can happen.

I agree, a lot can happen. Probably getting ahead of myself writing them off, although that's just a trait from a Marlins/Panthers fan (the Marlins being an example of why it works, the Panthers being the opposite).

I bet the Rays get a very good return on their $2 Million investment in Manny Ramirez.
He's not gonna be the Manny of 7-10 yrs and 3 fertility treatments ago, but I bet he hits 20 bombs and drives in 75-80, which is great production for 2 million bucks these days.

With Manny on the team, I bet the Rays convince about a dozen fans to go to the stadium. Should be a nice upgrade for them.

I was going to say a similar thing.

I was absolutely thrilled when we picked him up down the stretch last year. Why? Because when healthy, the guy still knows how to get his ass on base. Consistently. It didn't work out for us but, yeah. It's a good investment for Tampa.

Also, Damon didn't have a terrible year last year. Nothing too noteworthy, but he was solid.

for the price they payed? very good signings by the rays. is it going to keep them on boston's level? well, no. but if their pitching stays strong it could keep them in the wild card hunt.

The A's were a much bigger deal than the Phils back in the day.

The absence of anything in Indiana cracks me up and reminds me of the map of the first (and second for that matter) Clinton election:
