It's fucking infuriating to me as well.

Apparently he admitted to it upon questioning, and that's how they found out. There are rumors that his girlfriend is pregnant.

I guess I'm just completely naive and uninformed about that entire religion and that school. I had no idea about their "honor code" or any of that.

But, man. I know we have people on this board who went to that school, and all that, so I'm sorry if I come off like an asshole right now. But I just heard about this like 20 minutes ago and I am completely awestruck by the whole situation.

Quote:
Abstinence from illicit drugs, alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea (substances forbidden by the LDS Word of Wisdom)
# Honesty
# Encouraging others in their commitment to keep the Honor Code
# Living a chaste and virtuous life:

* Appropriate gender-specific behavior (no sexual harassment)
* No involvement with pornographic or indecent material
* No inappropriate sexual activity (no sexual relationships outside of marriage)
* No homosexual behavior

Abiding by the guidelines for dress, grooming, and housing. Skirts and shorts must reach to the knee and shirts may not be sleeveless. Form fitting, strapless and revealing clothing is not appropriate. Male students may not wear beards or goatees without permission; such permission is usually granted only to men with skin conditions aggravated by shaving, men whose religious beliefs require them to wear beards, or theatrical performances requiring beards.
Quote:
While both homosexuals and heterosexuals must abide the church's law of chastity (i.e. no sexual relations outside of marriage, no crude language, and no pornography), the Honor Code additionally prohibits all forms of physical intimacy that give expression to homosexual feelings (i.e. dating, making out). There is no similar restriction against expressing heterosexual feelings. No one may advocate homosexuality or promote homosexual relations as being morally acceptable.
Holy fucking shit. Mormonism!

Wow. In their quest for "honor," they actually end up just looking like a dangerously ignorant and intolerant institution that is totally frozen in the past.

I have zero issue with it whatsoever for one reason... you know full well going in that you're going to a school that's stuck in the middle ages. If you don't want to obey their bat shit crazy rules, don't go to a school like BYU or Liberty.

And here I thought I went to the only university in the country that required clearance from the health center to grow a beard for medical reasons.

I'm not even active or necessarily a "believer" any more, and this still came off and pretty offensive and intolerant of people who practice religion as a whole, let along "Mormonism". Most everything you quoted (beards aside) is "sin" in some way or another by about 95% of Christian sects, so I really don't know what the surprise is. Everyone knows what they're getting into there, you have to sign your name to the honor code once a year and have to have a local church representative review it with you and co-sign it each year, whether you're LDS or not. It's a private school run by one of the most strict practicing religions around, it is what it is. You want to go to their school, you play by their rules. The school loses athletes each and every year, I have no idea why this time is getting any more news than the hundreds and hundreds of other times it's happened with better athletes.

Don't get me wrong, I went there, and thought the Honor Code was mostly idiotic and annoying. I could tell you tons of ridiculous stories about it. In this case though, anyone at BYU would know that they'd screwed up and would get kicked out.

Even if I think the rules themselves are terribly antiquated (and boy do I), I kind of have to respect the university for sticking to its muskets.

That's religion in general, but yeah. Everyone on campus thinks the beard thing is idiotic, particularly since it has nothing to do with Mormonism.

The humorous thing is that not even 1/4 of the Honor Code was actually listed in that brief run down. To try to make sure you don't actually have sex, you're not ever supposed to be in a girl's apartment after midnight, and never to enter their bedroom (or they yours) at any time. To attempt to enforce this, they force you to live in BYU approved housing, so that way you always have some sort of overlord looking over you.

I knew a girl who was put on probation for mooning someone . One of my friends quit because he'd been placed on probation because someone he worked with (on campus job) made a crude comment (though it wasn't a "swear") and a BYU employee reported them but no one he worked with would "give up" who actually said it. One of my friends was drug into a huge interrogation for hours at the Honor Code office because someone said they'd received prank calls from his phone. Of course, they had no proof whatsoever, and after berating him they had to finally let him go but said he was on "warning". I was brought in by some BYU employee who said they were going to report me to honor code because the envelope of my tuition check had "sarcastic comments' on it. I looked at the envelope where they were written, flipped it over and showed him that my handwriting on the return address on the front was 100% different. I then laid into the idiot and told them they were harassing me, and for all I knew they could have written the comments on the back.

Anyways, that's the sort of culture you have to deal with when you go to a private school completely funded and run by an uber strict religion. Active church member's tithes and donations fund the school, so they create rules to try to avoid being embarrassed by "inappropriate" behavior. When silly things like I mentioned earlier get people in trouble, this kid certainly knew he'd be kicked out for getting his girlfriend pregnant. It is what it is.

Apparently it's not just BYU. I found out this morning that the code of conduct at Boston College includes a rule that if a man and woman are in the same room they must have at least one foot touching the floor.

every single person who decides to go to BYU knows what they're getting into before they set foot on campus.

do i personally have an issue with some of these rules? yea, as many do. i personally think the rules are nuts, but hey, to each his own. if someone's faith in something is that strong to adhire to all of those guidelines, god bless 'em.

but these rules aren't secret... you know going in. if he had an issue following them, he never should have went to BYU in the first place.

a kid i coached recently transfered to liberty from a D3 school. liberty is hardcore evangelical christian. jerry falwell is the president. they believe in jesus horses.

this kid is jewish.

i pleaded with him to change his mind, but the allure of the D1 scholarship that he (and more so his mother) was convinced he deserved was too great. so now a jew from liberal manhattan will be attending jerry falwell's university. i wish the kid the best, but i'm assuming at some point he'll be transferring once again, either by choice or by force. and i told him straight out that if and when that does happen, i'll certainly try to help him out, but i can't feel sorry for him because he knew full well what he was getting into before he set foot on that campus.

I could definitely work around that rule.

Wasn't that a rule on TV back in the 50's or something too.

He goes to a religious school. It wouldn't take me long to come up with a clever story to cover up for a pregnant girlfriend.

Minus caffeine. Fuckin' mormons need to relax on that. Coke is brilliant.
