If Howard could have converted a couple of the point blank layups ( and a FT or 2), Butler would have a nice little lead...they'll need him (and his Adam Morrisonesque 70's pornstache) in the 2nd half.

Yeah, but without Howard camping in the paint, Zoubek keeps getting caught outside on the pick-and-roll.

33 seconds, down one, with the ball. Great game.

That was great. Disappointed Butler lost, but they played a damn good game, and that last shot...ho shit.

it's not northern iowa vs. cornell, but close enough for me. i am thrilled with this national championship game... two teams who do things the right way, one out of necessity, one by choice.

it's a win win for college basketball today, no matter who wins... we're either going to have a mid-major national champion, or another championship for a coach and program who refuse to sell their soul.

and that's why i'm pulling for duke here... i think butler just getting there says a lot for the mid-majors out there. and i hope stevens stays right where he is and continues to build a dominant program and not be swayed by the big money programs.

i know why duke is hated. i get it. but i love 'em. they don't sell out. if you have off the court issues... be they academic or personal... duke simply doesn't want you. if all you are is an athletic freak with no real basketball ability? duke doesn't want you. they're more interested in what you can do vs. what you could do.

i don't know if it'll really change anything in basketball... but one can only hope.

as for the actual game... i think duke wins by 10-15 points, maybe more if matt howard is out. the difference between this duke team and ones that have flamed out in the past, going back to the JJ Redick and Sheldon Williams team that lost to LSU in the final four, is how big they are. they have a ton of big players. duke's problem in past tournaments was that if the three pointer isn't falling they were done. but this team actually out rebounds most opponents, both offensively and defensively. when you have three legit scoring options in scheyer, singler and smith, senior leadership, add in all those big kids and you're a very tough out in tournament play.
By the way, this was a great post.

I cannot stand Duke, but, I will admit to greatly respecting their program. I've been a UVA fan since Ralph Sampson was a Freshman, so my antipathy for all other ACC teams is strong, but, yeah, it's hard to argue with Duke's success, and the way they've achieved it.

Oh, Duke basketball has definitely played loose/broken rules about recruiting, academic standards and such before (not to the degree that other schools do it, of course). I wouldn't hate them nearly as much as I do if they weren't constantly being held up as a bastion of academic and athletic purity in the media.

Also, Krzyzewski coaches his players to draw charging calls by any means possible, and that tilts me to no end.

there's been one incident involving duke in K's entire career... corey maggette, and even that incident had nothing to do with duke themselves... maggette's AAU coach paid him (and every other player on his team) and got caught. did the duke coaching staff know this? maybe, but i'll say that they didn't based on their history. quinn snyder may have known... but he's been sort of exiled after all of his issues once he took over at missou.

as for bending of academic standards?

a friend of mine from high school played basketball at Yale. His older brother, who was my age, had a higher GPA and higher SAT's. but he wasn't 6'8" with a jumper, so he got wait listed at Yale, while his younger brother got in... and didn't have to pay for anything other than books, at a school that doesn't give athletic scholarships... and they're rich.

now the younger brother did have 90's and a 1300 SAT score... so it's not like he was a dumb dumb. but he did not have grades that would get him in to yale on their own. ironicly enough, the older brother ended up going to duke.

does this same thing happen at duke? do players who normaly wouldn't get accepted to the school get in because they have a great jumper? of course. this happens at every school that has athletics in the nation. it also happens with legacys, musicians and other artists as well.

every college has their minimum standards that they list on their info... nobody gets in by those minimum standards unless they have some sort of special talent to go along with the grades.

these kids at duke aren't minimum qualifyers, they aren't kids who had no credits, went to a prep school for a year and all of a sudden were honor students and passed the clearinghouse with flying colors, and these aren't kids who need to have someone cheat for them to get them in.

there is so much dislike and hatred for duke that if they were blatantly bending and breaking rules someone would bring them down. information would be leaked. there would be a smoking gun.

but there isn't.
