I agree. Unlike the studio with its horrendous mixing, I can actually hear the lyrics in the live performances and, guess what: they're fucking terrific. Who could've guessed? Clearly not the band.

1. U2/Muse (7 concerts in 2 weeks, too hard to rank so I'm going to cheat and lump them all in the top spot)
2. Amanda Palmer
3. Goldfrapp
4. Florence + The Machine
5. Lady Gaga
6. Big Day Out (Muse set was amazing, but as a whole day event not one of my favourite editions of this festival)
7. Mark Lanegan
8. Gogol Bordello
9. The Dead Weather
10. Regina Spektor
----------------------------
11. Neko Case

lololololol

1. u2 auckland 1
2. u2 auckland 2
3. dukes (only ranked bottom since their set was shorter than u2's, not their fault as they only have two albums)

wow i saw so many shows this year!

pretty sure i only went to 3 concerts in 2010. like i've said, i haven't felt like going anywhere this past year. hell, 2009 was a slow year for me and i still went to a dozen or so shows.

the other day: street dogs, the have nots, flatfoot 56, dead friends

sometime during the summer, if i'm not mistaken: big head todd & the monsters, some shitty opening band i can't remember the name of (and didn't write down in the place where i used to write this stuff down)

back in feb or march...newfound glory, saves the day, and two shitty bands whose names don't even warrant mention (if i could remember who they were)

hmm. i'd say the big head todd show might have been the best? or maybe the street dogs one. i'd go with the former for which show i had more fun at, and the SD one being the "better" show. the third was just because it would be funny, the whole nfg playing the debut album from cover to cover thing. saves the day were good, but i still haven't forgiven their current guitar player for butchering the end of "at your funeral."

God damn, I forgot another one. Or two. I saw Jonsi this year. I was bored out of my mind - not a great concert to stand around to, especially if you can't see a damned thing.

But now I know - just because you like a quiet, atmospheric album doesn't mean it's going to be your kind of concert to see. Maybe in a theater type venue where you're sitting down, but it's not good "stand around with your arms folded and watch" concert-going music for me.

Also saw Little Boots (I thought that was last year, but the mention above made me pull out my ticket stub to check). She was pretty awesome.

The Antlers opened at the National show I saw and were boring because all of their songs sounded exactly the same. The musicianship was pretty good (aside from the lead singer strumming his guitar maybe 12 times the entire show) but it was like one 40 minute song as far as I could tell.

She is great, and I kinda totally forgot about her. Might have to bust out a couple of her jams this morning. Remedy, Meddle, Stuck on Repeat, New In Town. Good stuff.

That album is so great. I hope she's working on a follow-up.

My top 9 shows this year

1. LCD Soundsystem, NYC
2. Arcade Fire, NYC
3. Atoms for Peace, NYC
4. Broken Social Scene, NYC
5. Muse/Metric, Newark
6. Crowded House, NYC
7. Pearl Jam, NYC
8. The New Pornographers, Brooklyn
9. The Swell Season, Brooklyn

I still have one more show this year - Prince this Wednesday, who I expect to be somewhere up there in my top 10, which is why I only put down a top 9

Most disappointing show this year was MGMT.

u2 and jay-z, auckland, mt smart stadium 25 november
u2 and jay-z, auckland, mt smart stadium 26 november
lady gaga, auckland, vector arena 14 march
dukes, auckland, juice bar 3 december
spandau ballet and tears for fears, auckland, vector arena 29 april

can't think of anything else offhand. would put tears for fears ahead of dukes if they hadn't been constrained to an opening set for spandau ballet.
