The Swell Season Announce New Album . ‘Strict Joy’

The Swell Season, the Oscar-winning duo of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech ingénue Marketa Irglova, are putting the finishing touches on ‘Strict
Joy,’ (Oct 23/Plateau (Ireland), Oct 26/Anti (Europe), Oct 27/Anti (N America) & Spunk (Australia)), the follow-up to their beloved, surprise hit
2007 film and gold-certified soundtrack ‘Once.’ The twelve new, original songs on ‘Strict Joy’ were recorded last year and document a time of great change.

‘Strict Joy,’ which borrows its name from a work by Irish poet James Stephens, was co-produced by Hansard and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), and recorded mostly at Katis’ Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. In addition to Hansard and Irglova, the album features Frames members Colm Mac Iomaire (violin), Joe Doyle (bass), Rob Bochnik (guitar), Graham Hopkins (percussion) plus guitarist Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen), pianist Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), percussionist Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo), horn players Steven Bernstein and Clark Gayton from Levon Helm’s band, and others.

I just adore them... I have seen them live at least 3 times and they are AMAZING LIVE... I just got tix to their DC show in November and can't wait! If you haven't seen them GO..see THEM!

Hooray a Boston date, I was really hating myself for missing not 1 but 2 concerts they put on here because I assumed it was a one-off tour.

It does beg the question with me though... when are we going to get to see The Frames in the US?

^ yvw.. you should go karen!

I think I just might! I have to wait for a couple things to happen this month though and am also considering making a quick trek to London Feb-March 2010 to see Noel Fielding Live and visit with a girlfriend, otherwise I may make it to the Wiltern in LA! I'll keep posted on tickets anyway. Thanks again!

The new album sounds great! Just listening to it for the first time.

And I bought the Swell Season Live from the Artist's Den concert DVD yesterday -- it's really good. And filmed in Seattle.

That's a fabulous DVD! I pre-ordered their album, but still haven't gotten it yet. On the expected shipping date it says the 4th, so I guess they technically have another day and a bit to get it to me. :)

I'm really looking forward to seeing their show in a few weeks!

Eyewitness account:

Nicole says:
I was sitting in the 6th row on the right side of the stage when the man landed in front of us. The Swell Season's violinist had just treated the audience to a gorgeous Irish song while the rest of the band took a break off stage. Glen came back on stage and led us in a sing along to the first song his guitarist ever wrote. We all giggled and sang about "rocking out to the maximum." Then a man fell from nowhere onto the right side of the stage. There was no sound as he fell but an audible thud when he landed. He was wearing dark clothing. Since Glen had been playfully teasing his guitarist just moments earlier I thought it might have been a joke until Glen screamed for help. People began dialing 911 and members of the audience who were doctors or paramedics rushed to the stage and began giving CPR. We were told to stay in our seats so that ambulances could arrive quickly (without exiting concert goers clogging the roads). We watched him receive CPR for about 30 minutes. A crew member came to the microphone and asked if anyone could identify the man who had landed on stage. The crew put up a black curtain directly in front of everyone who was trying to help him. He had not been resuscitated by the time I left. What began as an amazing evening became a nightmare. My heart goes out to everyone who witnessed this and to the man's family and friends.

So sad. Swell Season are such good people. My thoughts are with them and the audience members who had to witness this.

I think they're supposed to play in the Seattle area tomorrow night - I wonder if that's still on schedule? They must be so traumatized.
