I think the Van Halens only made 1 trip to Australia in their careers and that was with Cherone on vox.

Here are the top 25 tours worldwide for 2007 reported by Billboard magazine. The Rolling Stones $118 million gross from their summer European tour was not included because Michael Cohl did not reported the individual results to Boxscore including how many shows did or did not sellout. In addition, two Police shows played in Denmark and Lisbon Portugal before the cut off date of November 13, 2007 have still not been reported and are not apart of the figures. 3 Police shows beyond the cut off date have been reported and there are a total of 12 more Police shows not yet reported for 2007, 2 prior to the cut off date and 10 after.

Either way, we don't know because such figures are not available.
I thought that for the Fenway shows a huge portion(possibly as high as 10,000) of tickets were held back to encourage baseball season ticket holders sales. Police tickets went onsale way before the April start of the season, and Fenway would higher than usual bargaining power for ticket allocation giiven the rarity of performers allowed in the building. Just remember this when reporting an "instant sellout".

If Hannah Montana made the same number of tickets available as The Police and increased her ticket prices, she would not still be the #1 ticket reseller. Its easier to get to the top of the secondary ticket resell market when your tickets are low in price, and the number of tickets available is much smaller than those seeking to see the show. Both factors increase scalping and demand for the tickets in the secondary market.
There are at least 4 different ways to calculated #1 act from a ticket broker site:

-number of tickets resold
-total profit from tickets sold
-gross sales(including ticket value)
-highest average of profit percentage per ticket
-any algorithm using 2-4 of the above

How exactly do the broker sites calculate #1 hottest ticket?

You can argue forever how many tickets may or may not have been held back at Fenway Park, it is essentially irrelevant. Arthur Fogul, the promoter of the tour new the exact level of sales, and started booking stadiums around the world based on those sales levels at Fenway Park as well as at Madison Square Garden. That and the results of the Police tour to date are the only things that are relevant.

As for the second question, I'd say it would be total profit made from tickets resold, but I don't know it probably varies from site to site. In any event, not relevant in determining who is really in demand in the concert industry.

The East Hartford show at Rentschler Field have been added to the tour totals. Only 3 shows are missing from the 81 shows played in 2007. Unfortunately, these shows were not reported by the tour promoter Arthur Fogul. These shows were Lisbon Portugal, Aarhus Denmark, and Mexico City. Media reports and fan reports indicate that the attendance for Lisbon and Aarhus appeared to be good or at least normal, but the Mexico City show appeared to have trouble selling tickets given that two weeks before the show tickets were being given away through "2 for 1" purchases.

The Police tour is now moving through New Zealand, Australia, The Pacific, and Japan. Attendance in Australia appears to be lower than expected although official results are not in yet. Still the tour is on track to finish out with a gross total of between $350 and $400 million dollars making it either the 3rd or 2nd highest grossing tour in history. The tour will had back to Europe and North America in Spring/Summer 2008.

Melbourne fucking rocked last night, was an awesome gig. Fiction Plane were an awesome opener to Fergie (London Bridge was especially amazing), who was an even more awesome opener to The Police.

Wrapped Round Yer Finger, King Of Pain and Every Little Thing She Does is Magic went well off.......

Crap thing was the fact that only 40,000 rocked up to a 65,000 capacity gig.

Barely anyone's bought tix for Police in Aussie, which kinda confirms the reality that Aussies have bad taste in music.

Was at the Police gig last night at the MCG, absolutely freaking unbelievably amazing.

From the beginning to the end, the Police were superb, opening with a great Message In A Bottle, and closing with Roxanne. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic went off, as intedomine mentioned, as did Can't Stand Losing You, which transitioned into Regatta de Blanc and back (I think! :S)

All in all, an amazing gig, and totally worth the $150.

More than 60,000 Australians turned out for the Police's last show on the Synchronicity Tour in Melbourne Australia on March 4, 1984. At that time it was the largest show by a foreign artist in the history of Australia.
