It was going to be my top ranked album until Bono and friends crashed a bike into that thought with their fantastic release in 2014.

I know I won't win any cool points putting U2 at the top spot, but I don't really care. When I stepped back and thought about all the music I listened to last year, there were no other groupings of songs that I enjoyed and connected with as much as the U2 album.

But yeah, back to Cymbals, fucking awesome album.

I'm realizing now I should have put Warpaint's album somewhere on my list. Arguably the best rhythm section album of the year.

Amazing production on that album too.

But the best rhythm section album of the year is Black Messiah for The Charade alone.

Pump Up the Jam, the most well-known Belgian export product besides beer and waffles.

The Official B&C Best Albums of 2014 thread

I listened to that agalloch album axver mentioned while shoveling my driveway. I don't know, it was really hit or miss for me. I liked parts of it where the "atmospheric black metal" tag was most applicable, but other parts (like the track where it's just like a dude playing a dulcimer for 5 minutes) were boring as shit. I specifically listened to it while being outside in the snow at dawn, because that strikes me as the most perfect environment. Totally a soundtrack for mainly darkness, snowy quiet. It just didnt quite do as well as I expected at providing a solid enough soundtrack.

My suspicions that my list would end up in a slightly different order if done on a different day were proven correct when I finalised my big RYM list. I'm not going to change what I've put here - once it's posted, it's posted. But in case anybody's interested, here's my big list with a fully-reviewed top 34 (because why not?), a bunch of honourable mentions, and awards for best song, best non-2014 albums I discovered last year, worst album, biggest disappointment, etc.: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Axver...eases_of_2014/

Huh I didn't know you were particularly interested in metal - I thought your interest in heavy music focused on punk. But in other words, you didn't appreciate the interludes by Musk Ox? I quite like them, I reckon they add to the atmosphere, but I can see why other people wouldn't be so keen.

Ian McCulloch the U2 fan:
"Who buys U2 records anyway? It's just music for plumbers and bricklayers. Bono, what a slob. You'd think with all that climbing about he does, he'd look real fit and that. But he's real fat, y'know. Reminds me of a soddin' mountain goat."
"And as for Bono, he needs a colostomy bag for his mouth."
