"Challengers" was more subdued and less poppy than past TNP albums, so it didn't get rave reviews. Ironically, though, it was one of the band's strongest lyrical records.

"Together" is almost completely the opposite with it being a lot more poppy and upbeat. It's a very good record and more attune to TNP's earlier stuff.

I went to the band in Montreal play, and they were very good. The dynamic of the group is much different with both Neko and Dan on board.

This was extremely accurate, it was an absolute blast. Easily one of the best shows I've seen this year. It's rare bands evoke any any sort of response from the crowd at these free shows, as the crowd is usually mostly mad up of people who haven't heard of the artist or don't have any interest in music in the first place, but everyone was dancing around like crazy and having a great time. There were a few more songs I would have liked to have heard, but it's to be expected from a band with this much enjoyable material. Here's the setlist.

Sing Me Spanish Techno
Up in the Dark
Myriad Harbour
Crash Years
The Laws Have Changed
Jackie, Dressed in Cobras
Adventures in Solitude
Twin Cinema
Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk
All the Old Showstoppers
Your Hands (Together)
Go Places
Silver Jenny Dollar
Use It
To Wild Homes
Moves
The Bleeding Heart Show

ENCORE:
Challengers
The Slow Descent Into Alcoholism
Mass Romantic
My Rights Versus Yours
Testament to Youth in Verse

Did Dan hop on and off the stage (more like stagger on and off the stage)?

Damn solid set. Exactly what I saw them play, a month or two back. "The Bleeding Heart Show" is just too wonderful, live. It's fantastic when like 90% of the people in audience all get goosebumps at the same time and feel so happy they could burst. Some of the most genuine, exuberant applause I've ever heard, after that one. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

I'm honestly not sure if 20% of the audience knew the lyrics to a single New Pornographers song today, but the band was fuckmazing regardless. My crush on Neko Case remains intact thanks to her stage banter and pliable hat, not to mention vocal prowess. I didn't really care for Dan Bejar's tracks when I first got into the band, but Jackie Dressed In Cobras has become my favorite Pornos track, and watching Bejar wander around the stage with a beer while dressed like a homeless man made my day. AC Newman has a fucking lisp. I had no idea who the hell I thought these guys were, but I love them even more now.

Setlist:

Sing Me Spanish Techno
Myriad Harbour
The Laws Have Changed
Jackie Dressed in Cobras
Moves
Crash Years
Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk
All the Old Showstoppers
Testament to Youth in Verse
Challengers
Your Hands (Together)

Are you trying to tell me that on this day, I was in the same general area as IYS. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

I watched them, one of like three acts I would care to see, on my computer. It was much, much, much cheaper. Looking forward to Jimmy Cliff!

You'll be pleased to know that a little bit of Destroyer snuck into the first Bejar track on this.

Letter From an Occupant = a good song.

But I suppose I've missed a few songs since then.

The new album is pretty decent.

The first three albums, especially Twin Cinema, are priceless to me though. Can't wait to see them live again, eventually. I don't think I'll be able to hit up their upcoming show, but the album isn't even out yet, so I would bet they'll be around again soon.

Actually, I own a copy of twin cinema, I just don't think I ever listened to it.

Mofo is standing behind me with a musket, isn't he...
