Biggest stunner of the year, too, because this record somehow does not suck. In fact, it's actually pretty pleasant (if 10-ish minutes/3-ish songs too long)! Weird, wild, unimaginable (for the last 15 years) stuff, I tells ya. It'll hardly win any EOY polls, and it's got nothing on the band's "classics," but it is a solid record from a band which hasn't released one since 1992. I am happy, I am surprised, and I will be listening, again!

"Underneath The Stars," the album-opener, is very enjoyable, and "The Only One" remains one of the best singles I've heard, this year. It's chock full of Wish-y goodness, as are several of the record's highlights.

For the record, this is no Playing The Angel, as far as late-career albums from former '80s mega-acts are concerned, but it's definitely good enough to get to know.

I've heard it's either pretty good or terrible. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Easily the biggest disappointment of the year and the band's worst album. I am a huge Cure fan but this album wasn't interesting. Nothing stuck out. Just terrible by their standards.

i've listened to the rome performance of the album and agree it's not their best, but it's way better than the last 3 albums. maybe if Fat Bob sticks to his promise of releasing the album of "darker" tracks this xmas they'll be vindicated.

EDIT: i now have the album. it sounds pretty good, beats out "wild mood swings", "bloodflowers" and "the cure". still agree with screwtape though.

Pretty average boring; none of the tracks really impress me on it excluding I'll Sleep When I'm Dead; at best most of the tracks are good but nothing special. The opening song sounds like a cover band trying to write a song for Disintegration

Glad to hear at least some of you are liking it. I'm already familiar with a good chunk of the songs from getting all of the pre-release singles, seeing them live earlier this year, and watching some of the performances of the other new songs live. Based off the singles, I'm unfortunately not too surprised that it's not clicking with a lot of people (at the same time though, I am quite surprised to see so many people acting as if their last 3 albums were terrible, as from what I've seen most fans used to say they enjoyed all of them. Particularly Bloodflowers.) Even if I don't end up liking any of the tracks that I haven't heard yet, it'll still be worth buying just for a studio version of Underneath the Stars.

I think I'll listen to the singles again today while I wait to hear the album next Tuesday when it's out.

Sounds like you agree with me, good sir or madam. Screwy was the one saying that it's the worst Cure album ever. I don't think it's anything approaching great, but I think we agree that it's discernibly better than Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, and The Cure (which sounded, quite frankly, more like whatever the disease is than its cure). You put this record up to those mountains of shit (singles excepted) and it definitely doesn't sound so bad.

Also, is nobody else here feeling my love of "The Only One"...? I've been into that song since May, and I'm still not tired of it.

I'll give you Wild Mood Swings but The Cure is decent at times and Bloodflowers is amazing. I'm hoping for an album of darker tracks too.

It's a decent single. I think the singles from the last album were all better than it though. To each their own.

The Perfect Boy is probably my favorite of the 4 singles, but Only One is close. Probably just edges it out for me because of the Perfect Girl reference/relation, and because I over listened to the Only One.

I love Bloodflowers. It's in the top 4 of Cure albums for me (with Wish, Disintigration, and Kiss Me)

I agree that Bloodflowers is a consistently strong album - cut from the same cloth as Disintegration, even if it fails to live up to the sullen grandeur of that album.

Wish wouldn't even make my top 7 Cure albums, not one of my favorites. It'd probably be #8 or 9.

This album is mediocre at the very best. On the same level as the last one, which was their worst IMO. Anyways, I don't get the hate for Bloodflowers. It was a great album and the one which should have ended the band. Hell, I'll put it in my top 5 as well. Watching Me Fall, 39 and the title song are all great, great songs.

It's funny, when the self-titled album came out, everyone here loved it. It's interesting to see so much hate for it now.

i listened yesterday... i don't get what you people don't like about it... the singer's voice has aged well at least.

I also love Bloodflowers:drool:

Have not had a chance to listen to any of the new singles yet

The Cure - 4.13 Dream

absolutely love it. it's not on first listen though. give it a chance and listen to it at least 3-4 times.

As much as it pains me to say it, it does seem as though Robert Smith is becoming his own tribute act. This album seems to be attempting to capture pieces of all The Cure's finest albums without ever hitting the mark ("Underneath the Stars" = Disintegration, "The Only One" = Wish, "The Scream" = Pornography, etc.). Or perhaps I need a few more listens.

I listened to it the other day and enjoyed it quite a bit. Don't know why there're so many negative thoughts. Maybe I should listen again?

One of the songs came up on shuffle yesterday and I was really liking it and then it just ended...reminds me of Accelerate where the best songs would just end way too early preventing them from becoming anything special

it isn't anything new or inovative, ''just'' typical cure song we all like. but robert can still write catchy tunes and remains as emotional as always.

While I would personally say that I feel it's the weakest Cure album to date, at the end of the day, it's still not all that bad. I personally LOVE 'Underneath the Stars', and don't get the "trying to sound like Disintegration" argument at all. That IS what The Cure has sounded like for decades. I sorta wonder if some of the people arguing that have actually heard all of The Cure's albums or not. In my opinion, it's one of the best sounding tracks they've done in years, I love it. Outside of the singles that have already been mentioned in this thread, I am also liking 'The Reasons Why'.

I was shocked that Pitchfork was so positive (relatively) about it in their review:

Well, I am quite familiar with The Cure's entire discography and have trouble seeing how Disintegration is in any way emblematic of a "typical" Cure sound. The epic, brooding quality of that album is really only reflected in Bloodflowers - albums like Seventeen Seconds, which was sparse and minimalist, The Top, which was manically discursive, and even Wish hardly resemble Disintegration at all, outside perhaps of lyrical content.
