I can't believe people think this is their worst album. It's way better than the self-titled, or Wild Mood Swings for sure. And I personally like it better than any of the albums from before The Head On The Door.

I didn't say that at all, so I'm having trouble seeing how you took that from what I wrote.

Eh? The brilliance of Pornography is light years ahead of this washed up, tired stuff.

Although Underneath the Stars is a great song.

I've never really enjoyed Pornography, no matter how much everyone tells me I should.

"I personally LOVE 'Underneath the Stars', and don't get the "trying to sound like Disintegration" argument at all. That IS what The Cure has sounded like for decades."

What other interpretation can you take from this statement? "That" is either referring to Disintegration or "trying to sound like Disintegration," and if they have been adhering to "that" for decades than it must be in some way typical.

The Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography era of the band is presently my favorite "era" of the band. Ironically, at one point Seventeen Seconds and Faith were my least favorite of their albums. I've always dug Pornography (the album, pervs!)

Speaking of which, I remember when I was in school I once tried to look up some Cure lyrics on a computer in the university library and the page got blocked and froze the computer because the album's title was "Pornography". I freaked expecting the library gestapo to make me explain why I was looking up "pornography" in the library, but nothing happened.

Ah, I think my wording caused the confusion. The "That" was in reference to Underneath the Stars general guitar sound/style. I was saying that I don't think they're "trying to sound like Disintegration" in that song. I had meant that the sprawling RS guitar riffing type tracks (I don't really know how to explain the sound, but it's found on every album they've done since Kiss Me) have been a major part of The Cure's signature sound for decades, and isn't something solely found on Disintegration. See songs like The Kiss, The Snakepit, Open, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Trust, End, Jupiter Crash, Out of This World, Bloodflowers, The Promise, Underneath the Stars, etc.

I personally think all of these songs share a similar warm sprawling "Robert Smith guitar riffing sound/style" that is as much of a signature sound for The Cure as The Edge's chimey delayed guitar is for U2. It's the type of sound I not only expect from The Cure, but almost crave to hear. I guess I'm just surprised to hear some people not loving Underneath the Stars, as it's easily the best thing about the album for me so far.

My favourite era is from Head On The Door to Wish. I love those four albums. Kinda like how I feel about U2 from 1983-1990.

That's definitely their "classic Cure" period, great stuff. The majority of their big hits seem to fall in that period. Similar to what I said about The Beatles, I think I've over-listened to that period and that's what helped me "re-discover" some of the other periods. I seem to always overdo it and tire myself out with everything I love, music and otherwise....

I see now. I suppose that I was referring to the lush, layered arrangements and treated vocals of the track - those things for me put it firmly in line with Disintegration - but I see your point about the guitars. Let me also say that I find "Underneath the Stars" to be a very strong track, and clearly the standout from the album. Yet The Cure is up against higher standards than most bands, and frankly I expected more from them on this album. Compared to the majority of what I hear these days, however, 4:13 Dream is certainly a strong album. The band certainly did spoil us with albums like Pornography, Head on the Door, and Disintegration.

Very true.

Considering what a mess it was for them to finally get this album released, it will be interesting to see if the "dark album" really will come out soon or if it will take years. Hopefully it delivers when it is released.

it's all about what cure songs you like. some folks like HOTD/KMKMKM, because they're more pop oriented. some like the 17 seconds -pornography period because they like the more darker cure material. that simple.
