Let's review why this song is so fucking great. Crank it. On the long wide open desert highway with the sun roof open, there is practically nothing better.

 
Exploding Boy, holy shit! That was awesome. I got really sad when I found out I missed 2 Late the night before, though. I don't like to see setlists for shows if I know I'm attending, so I refrained until the gig. I had a decent time, but knowing I missed out on one of my all-time favorite songs by a day hurts about as much as finding out that I missed Bruce playing I'm on Fire the night before I drove all the way out to St. Louis to see him for my 21st birthday. But that's life when you're a fan of a band that rotates sets, I guess. And Exploding Boy is probably my second favorite b-side of theirs, so we're good.

All in all, the Hollywood Bowl is a gorgeous venue, but I will never go again if I don't get into the lower portion of the bowl. Waaaaaay too far from the stage, video screens were absolutely useless, and everyone around me was more interested in complaining loudly during songs, then just listening to the songs. Since the acoustics are so good, you can hear the music and people talking clear as day. It was awful. Also, once again, I wasn't feeling well. I don't know what's up with my health's timing with concerts, but this can stop any time.

Also just took a look at that Houston setlist. WTF!! That's awesome. Really happy for you Joyful.

I wish there had been a bit less 90s in our set, but overall I enjoyed it. I did NOT care for the encore that ended with Wrong Number, but that last encore, complain about it if you will, but I still find it incredibly fun.
 
The current final encore is the equivalent of the Pride, Beautiful Day, etc. hit parade U2 was doing on 360. I mean, it's OK, the songs are mostly good, but it felt so much more rehearsed than everything else.

:shrug: After that third encore the crowd seemed bored out of their minds. Glad they got back into it before they went home.
 
I'm sure they liked the song choices, but I found the performance during that section uninspired compared to the rest of the show. It does a disservice to the songs because placing them in a static spot prevents some potentially cool interactions from happening.

The simple answer is to spread the songs out throughout the night instead of lumping them together, but honestly, I'm loath to criticize anything related to setlists when it comes to this band because they're still way ahead of the curve. Playing Exploding Boy and In Between Days (its A-side) back to back is what I call an inspired move. U2 certainly isn't playing Luminous Times and WOWY back to back any time soon.

If 2 Late is played tonight, you can all just assume that Travis and I got divorced, cause I cannot attend this evening's programming.
 
I had a great time, don't get me wrong. If I'd been feeling better, I'm sure it would've been a lot better, though.
 
One of my favorite moments in any live album is when the fans sing along to the keyboard at the first of Play For Today on Paris.

Let's be honest, you lose basically nothing if you just go straight from Pornography to Disintegration. Everything in between is inessential fluff at best.

(OK there's a really good EP hiding in The Head on the Door.)
 
My Cure dreams did not come true. Not even close. But hey, no regrets. Amazing seats, sound and performance. I'll never get closer to the band. Plus, Bloodflowers stuff! Closedown! The Perfect Girl! (I love the song but always forget about it) Burn!

I could have bought tickets to all three shows and only gotten a total of three songs from before 1984. That's really sad. It's such a wonderful era. But, you know, it is what it is. Maybe they'll do trilogy shows again. Going to both shows gave me a nice balance of pop and goth Cure. Tonight's show was really heavy. Just replace that second encore with some early stuff and it would have been perfect.

The Head on the Door is a stone-cold classic just as it is. It's my favorite Cure album. In Between Days, Push, A Night Like This, Sinking...wow wow wow.

The Top sucks and KMKMKM is full of garbage as well as some gems. I don't know why fans hold up the latter as a classic.

Yeah, those four are the EP. The rest ranges between filler and junk. The only Cure album post-Pornography that I can listen to in full is Disintegration. I'd say Wish too, but I hate Wendy Time too much.
 
Wish doesn't work for me in full. I love certain songs, but it badly needs editing.

I gotta say, I gained a renewed affection for Bloodflowers tonight. That album is a bit of a slog in order, but pull the right parts out and the quality stands out. There are some great songs on that one. Out of This World was a great opener and paired nicely with the Disintegration material.

What would you cut from Wish?

The El Paso show was heavy, too, but I did get a lot of pop in the 2013 show and six (!) songs from Head on the Door, so I can't complain. I especially loved hearing Closedown and Elise this year.

I'm glad you had a great seat. I am just never going to be the "I don't care where I sit as long as I'm there" kind of fan because in my experience, with a few exceptions, there is a direct correlation between distance from stage, audience attention, and overall quality of experience. Since I have to travel long distances to see anybody, it's usually not worth it to be far away from the stage (although you can certainly be close up and still have annoying people, so there are never any guarantees, obviously).
 
Mid-80s were the Cure's peak. Ragging on The Top is almost as insane as the album itself. It's a brilliant psychedelic pop album, and it and THOTD represent Smith's peak as a songwriter. Throw in Japanese Whispers and Blue Sunshine and you have a quartet that's nearly perfect. Actually, the run from Seventeen Seconds through THOTD is flawless. Smith is one of the best pop songwriters ever.

I agree that Kiss Me is half crap though. Same with Wish. I don't care for anything on that album aside from Open, High, End, Friday, and Deep Green Sea. Disintegration is basically the end of the Cure for me.
 
Guys, the only show I can possibly go to will be their headliner at Bestival (Toronto). Will they put on a full set (or even, extended to the point of their other shows on this tour), or will it be abbreviated, do you think? In order to go, you have to buy the entire day pass..so I just want to make sure it'll be a solid set, not an hour or some such thing..
 
I love the weird, psychedelic sound and feel of The Top, it's just that I don't find the songs to be very good.

Wendy Time is horrible. Trust and To Wish Impossible Things are fine on their own but slow an already 65 minute album to a crawl. My main issue with the album is that it doesn't flow well and the songs tend to meander.

I'd replace those three with This Twilight Garden and get the album down to a trimmer 10 tracks, 50-ish minutes.
 
I agree it doesn't flow well. It doesn't seem to know what it's supposed to be, it's kind of all over the place. But I guess because I've listened to it a gazillion times since the day it was released, I got used to its flaws and have always had great affection for it.

I like Wendy Time. :shrug:

And Trust and To Wish Impossible Things are fantastic.
 
Hey guys- going to the Cure concert this week, says show time is 7:30. How long does the opening band play, and what time does the Cure hit the stage? Trying to figure out dinner/drinks before the show.
