The Big Pink

No, this thread wasn't created to discuss Lance's mom's upcoming 69th feature-length porno. This is about a greatly-hyped shoegazey electro-rock duo from London who just released their supremely enjoyable debut A Brief History Of Love.

So yeah, first off, shoegazey electro-rock? What the fuck is that?

A lovely combination of these, to start:

YouTube - The Big Pink-Too young to love

YouTube - the big pink tonight live @ bestival 2009

The album is a bit jumpy, which is common for a debut, but it hangs together surprisingly well, and the album has a certain emotional curve that climaxes precisely when it should. Again, not Lancemom, just very much like her.

Recent bands this particular album reminds me of:

Cut Copy (Bright Like Neon Love especially, not so much In Ghost Colours)
Glasvegas
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
The Horrors

Then, of course, you could toss in the requisite My Bloody Valentine, Jesus And Mary Chain, etc. comparisons.

Essentially, A Brief History Of Love combines drama (NOT melodrama; this ain't campy) with well-crafted melodies against that reverb-soaked, beat-laden musical backdrop so many kids are digging on these days. One of my favorite records of the year at this point.

Not my favorite of the year, but there were a few stand-out tracks. "Love In Vain" (which reminded me a lot of the Verve, was quite good. The title track was hauntingly beautiful, and, I can't remember what track it was, but there was one song that reminded me a lot of "Who Can Say" by The Horrors, which, in my book, is nothing but a good thing.

ETA: "At War With The Sun". That one was pretty great as well.

I'm glad I didn't read too much about comparisons before I picked up the album, because I'm not fond of any of these bands.

I wouldn't say it's one of my favourites this year, but it's pretty good listening nonetheless

I got shouted down, re: this band, a few weeks ago. Still good, though I'll join the chorus and warn you that it's not perfect. The singles ARE perfect, though. So at least there's that.

Strangely enough, I'm not either. Or Glasvegas and Pains, at any rate. But I appreciate a band who can incorporate their influences into something superior to what they were working with originally, or at least their contemporaries, and I think The Big Pink manage that.

Their first album was good; I didn't enjoy their second album nearly as much.
