Songs, year by year

This albums year-by-year business is too damn hard for me. Think I'll try songs instead. Consider it a mix of sentimental (and thus quite predictable) favourites and treatises nailed to church doors.

Still with gaping holes because, well, that's how it goes.

1977 - Marquee Moon - Television
1978 -
1979 - Transmission - Joy Division
1980 -
1981 - Golden Brown - The Stranglers
1982 -
1983 -
1984 - The Unforgettable Fire - U2
1985 - Cloudbusting - Kate Bush
1986 - I Know It's Over - The Smiths
1987 - The Dead Heart - Midnight Oil
1988 - Under the Milky Way - The Church
1989 - Fascination Street - The Cure
1990 - Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
1991 - Country Feedback - REM
1992 - Until the End of the World - U2 (hey, massaging release dates up the wahzoo here)
1993 - Lemon - U2
1994 - Dirty Epic - Underworld
1995 - History - The Verve or Slug - Passengers
1996 - Give In To My Love - Paul Kelly
1997 - Karma Police - Radiohead
1998 - Metal Heart - Cat Power
1999 - Get Up - Sleater-Kinney
2000 - We Float - PJ Harvey
2001 - Revelator - Gillian Welch
2002 -
2003 -
2004 - O Children - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2005 - Don't Get Lost In Heaven/Demon Days - Gorillaz
2006 - Star Witness - Neko Case
2007 - Fake Empire - The National
2008 - Sempiternal/Amaranth - School of Seven Bells
2009 - Quick Canal - Atlas Sound
2010 - Lemonworld - The National
2011 - One Sunday Morning - Wilco
2012 - Racehorse - Wild Flag
2013 - Jubilee Street - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2014 -

There are other songs on your list that I certainly like or even love, but, I cannot name a song put out in the last 5 years or more that I enjoy more than this one. It's so sublime.

As an aside, I came very close to putting 'Amazing' by Alex Lloyd under 2001... in that way that you sometimes stand near a cliff edge at some tourist spot and picture just throwing your wallet and then yourself right off into the abyss. Not even in a suicidal way, just in a, wow, what if I did that? way.

How are you guys looking at songs or albums from each year? Are you using what you have in iTunes, or just using Google and looking through the oodles and oodles of albums/songs that came out that year?

Because I'd like to do this, but jesus, it sounds exhausting.

It is fucking exhausting, but speaking personally, I don't even have itunes, or anything like it. I just sit here and try to think of all the stuff that really has stuck with me, and then, if I can't remember offhand, look up what year it was released in.

Oof, that sounds even worse. I'd hook up my iPod and see what I could come up with, but my iTunes is hosed right now. Oh well.

Same. I could do it for the last few years but not up til I was born.

I won't even attempt to do this, but I do agree that Marquee Moon is hands down the best song of 1977. It runs laps around everything else.

I'd still take Marquee Moon, if I'm being honest. One is top 10 all-time, the other is more like top 20.

1977 was a great music year. Lots of good transitional music being released and genres being birthed.
