Quite frankly

18 | MGMT: Oracular Spectacular

whilst i agree entirely with your sentiments that it's got three great singles in Electric Feel, Kids and Time to Pretend and the rest is filler, i think the reason it does so well is because it's an album & genre that has been done my many bands over the past few years, but it's the only one that's really crossed a divide and become insanely popular in the mainstream, leaving similar and better albums languishing underground.

or maybe i have no idea what i'm saying.

THE BOTTOM LlNE IS THAT THIS ROLLING STONE LIST COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT BETTER THAN IT WAS. THE EFFORT WAS NOT THERE, AND IT IS EMBARRASSING FOR THIS MAGAZINE. I'M GONNA HAVE SOME CHEESE DOODLES. QUITE FRANKLY, HE'S A DAMN POINT GUARD!

Ah, I disagree with that one (not so much with the others of your list).
After a quick count I see I have 29 of these records.

BTW, some individual ballots (including those for Song of the Decade) you can see here: The Best Music of the Decade: Inside the Ballots : Photos : Rolling Stone

Objectively speaking, ATYCLB was very significant and deserved a spot, yeah. I was probably too harsh there.

Let's see. I've heard...67 of these records. Can't say too many of them are worth owning.

High five from me to Rolling Stone for putting Is This It in the Top 2 and for rating College Dropout as the best Kanye album. And for showing love to the Arctics, Johnny Cash, P.J. Harvey, Sleater-Kinney, Postal Service and The Libertines. And The Hold Steady, even though they have 3 superior albums to the one that made the list. Strange. I also like the high placement of Marshall Mathers LP. It's an album by an artist who has become a joke and an album that I think a lot of people have forgotten about, but it really is a pretty memorable and well-crafted work.

Some of the bad things: Modern Times and Magic, two albums by two of the best artists ever, are way too high on the list. Probably on there for career achievement. Same with No Line On The Horizon. And, yeah, MGMT sucks.

I think it's a pretty decent list.

I can't help but feel that you're being a little conservative here.

Big ups for putting the Strokes at #2 - that album is pure brilliance. U2's rankings look about right. The Killers continue to be the most underrated rock band out there, IMO.

Decent list... I'd say about a quarter of them deserve to be there, a quarter of them are good but not quite top 100 good, and the rest either I don't know or are not that good. Also a decent amount of variety though anything heavy (metal, hardcore, etc) is completely ignored...oh well, I guess there are other music magazines for that kind of music.

if bob dylan has 2 albums in the top 11 of this decade then that's how you know it's been an awful decade for music.

...or how amazing Dylan has been this late in his career?

But hey, why take my word for it? The most comprehensive critics poll in the U.S. (the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll) awarded first place to Modern Times and Love & Theft in their respective years. And if you think the poll is somehow slanted towards old school artists, here are the winners from the past 15 years:

1995 - PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love
1996 - Beck - Odelay
1997 - Bob Dylan - Time Out of Mind
1998 - Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
1999 - Moby - Play
2000 - OutKast - Stankonia
2001 - Bob Dylan - Love and Theft
2002 - Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2003 - OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
2004 - Kanye West - The College Dropout
2005 - Kanye West - Late Registration
2006 - Bob Dylan - Modern Times
2007 - LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
2008 - TV on the Radio - Dear Science

LCD Soundsystem and TV on the Radio are boring? That's news to me. I had been under the impression that they were all sorts of awesome up until this revelation.

I'm dumbfounded that Modern Times was above Love & Theft, to be honest.

I'm not, never liked Love & Theft always thought it was one of Dylan's weakest. Modern Times on the other hand, great album

Anyway naturally it's an awful list but what do you expect?

It's a pretty typical Rolling Stone type of list, I guess, on the whole. By default it can't help but include some very substantial records of the decade, thankfully. It also includes a lot of dross. None of the three U2 albums, as the other poster noted, have any business being there.

I didn't check but is the National included on that list, at all?

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, they're not.

Yeah, so I see. Well that's an omission right there.

Also, I am not a fan of including every release by a band just because the magazine decides said band is significant.

Radiohead: I actually quite like Hail to the Thief, but there are 100 spots on that list. It shouldn't be there.

Anything by Kings of Leon. Honestly, fuck off! Never mind what appears to be their entire back catalogue.

How you can talk about this decade...and completely shut out the Foo Fighters...makes this list ludicrous and irrelevant IMO. One by One , In Your Honor, and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace all deserve to be there, and In Your Honor should be top 5.

Then again, should I be surprised? To quote a compelling line from Almost Famous, "...But it's Rolling Stone. He looks harmless, but he does represent the magazine that trashed '' Layla''...broke up Cream, ripped every album Led Zeppelin ever made." Enough said.
