RIP Gregory Slay

Gregory Slay, best known as the drummer for Remy Zero, died today. He was 40 years old.

He wasn't one of the big names in music, but I liked several of the bands/projects he was involved with. I particularly enjoy Sleepwell, the self titled album he and Jeffery Cain (also from RZ) put out post Remy Zero.

Sad...

I'm a huge Remy Zero fan, he was a great drummer.

Since the Remy Zero thread is in the archive, I thought I'd post this here.

Remy Zero concert tour dates 2010, concert tickets and Remy Zero reviews | Songkick

Remy Zero will be playing some shows on the west coast in October (Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and LA).

A little too far away for me.

But I can indulge my fangirlism a bit here.... I met Jeffery Cain this spring! We were both at a concert of a mutual friend and I got to meet him while hanging around backstage after the show. I had interacted with him in a chat room several years ago (2003) about a project he and the friend who's concert we attended had just finished work on, and he actually uploaded a song from that project for me that night. I was the first person other than a small circle of insiders to hear it. So finally getting to meet him in person was very cool. Really sweet guy. He even gave me a hug.

(and the two just finished recording their second collaborative album about a week ago, so I'm looking forward to hearing that. )

Isidore?
Steve Kilbey?

I consider myself very lucky as I'm living in the Bay Area, close to SF.
Can't believe I'll be seeing RZ in October.
Without Gregory though

Yes and yes.

Are you familiar with Isidore? It seems to be more popular among Church fans than Remy ones.

Here's what Steve wrote on his blog just over a week ago about Isidore 2 *:

jeffrey hit the airport today
what a dear friend and valuable colleague
we have made an incredible 2nd album
the music is superb
cain is a master writer crafting strange melodic wonderful songs
i believe i sang pretty well
some titles to whet your appetite
the reappearance (of isidore)
repossession
life somewhere else
the privateer
belle in mid air
that old black spirit
you will remain (for gregory)
some reverse magic
song of the city, song of the road
readymade
blessing
...ive forgotten some of the others
the spirit of our dear departed drummer informed our sessions
this album will be dedicated to the memory of gregory slay
a true trickster and sorely missed companion
did i mention cedric le moynes incredible bass playing?
i am truly excited and truly inspired
i think its a thing of real love n beauty
no drink or drugs were consumed
these songs plucked clean from the void
crushing any doubts i had that i needed to be high to write
this record is the antithesis of all that tiresome rubbish you'll normally hear
jeffreys music is always unexpectedly familiar with tiny twists
my lyrics are concerned with life death and infinity as per usual only better
i cant wait for you to hear it
jeffrey is gonna mix it back in alabama
this is a record you will cherish for the rest of your life
i am very very happy
wow!
music is the answer
it always was
now i reaffirm it in spades
om mani padme hum

* it's in typical Kilbey-blog style, which drives some people nuts because of the almost complete lack of punctuation. Sorry about it, if that sort of thing bothers you, but it's very Steve.
