I just got back from my charity sand volleyball tournament (that's right, Impy gives back), so after a shower I'll be getting some RSD festivities in.

Now that you said exclusives are going quickly, I might eschew going to Waterloo. It's the best, but it's also the most popular. Backspin is closer to my house, is a much less popular operation, is excellent, and has FREE BEER.

Case closed.

Waterloo had it too. It was awesome.

But RSD sucked. I didn't find anything. Anything. I snagged the It's Blitz! vinyl, but that would have been easy to find. I went to four stores, none of which had the MMJ EP. Waterloo said it sold out of it in half an hour and that it was the most highly sought after item of the day. Couldn't find the Conchords single. Couldn't find the Lips/Keys split. And couldn't find the Wilco reissues because apparently they got delayed.

What a bust.

The MMJ EP had several copies around at the Electric Fetus when I was there. :hmm: Apparently it wasn't as demanded here. I didn't see the Conchords single, the Lips/Keys split was gone from the Fetus when I got there (so 20 minutes or so after opening).

Too bad all the exclusive stuff you wanted was gone already though. :down:
 
Well, I didn't see the bargains I was hoping for on "normal" releases, but I did pick up the Pavement live album. The track listing looks incredible, but I haven't listened to it yet. And I got the last MMJ double 10" in Memphis, I think, after going to three stores. I thought I probably overpaid for this stuff - $20 for 7 MMJ songs... What's everyone else paying for these items? This stuff is already showing up on ebay. :sad:

Oh yeah, and I got to see Jay Reatard melt down tiny Goner Records with an in-store show. :rockon: Solid stuff. Unfortunately, Sonic Youth didn't share the bill. But free food and :beer: eased my pain. And afterwards I saw a grown man punch another grown man in the face at least twice. :ohmy: (Completely unrelated to Record Store Day!) Probably the first man fight I've seen this decade! Surreal, but strangely invigorating...

Just curious, did anyone else happen to see a RSD release from Mute Math? One store listed them on a bulletin board with the promo stuff for 4/18/09, but if they had anything, they sold out. I was curious if it was old or new material...
 
The only thing I saw for Mute Math was the Spotlight EP on vinyl. Don't know if it was the RSD exclusive or not, though.

By the time I got to the store, everything I wanted was pretty much gone, which sucked. I was looking forward to the Springsteen and Metric 7 inchers.

I didn't realize that the brainchild behind this is actually a VP for Bull Moose Music, which is the store I go to. Kinda cool.

I stopped by the local store and got the Whiskeytown seven inch. Everything else I wanted was gone. I ended up picking up a few things on vinyl in the buck bin, purchased Kicking Television for the wife who is on a Wilco kick after seeing them on Thursday night and got a bag of goodies. And a free hot dog.

I had too much to drink the night before so I did not partake in the free beer. It was too crowded for me too (whine).
 
:yes: It's a fantastic store. The employees are always awesome, very helpful and friendly. It was super crowded, but fun. :up:

I'm going to have to start going there more often than Cheapo now, I think too; the Electric Fetus is nicer and less expensive.
 
The Cheapo here in Austin is just atrocious. The five stores I've been to with any regularity to are ranked thusly:

Waterloo
Backspin
End of an Ear

Cheapo



Sound on Sound



Waterloo really is the standard. I guess that's why Rolling Stone said it's the best around. And I won't be going to Sound on Sound ever again.
 
The Cheapo here actually has a big selection of vinyl in the basement, but you end up spending $5-6 more per album if it's new, not used.

I don't mind paying a few dollars over what the record label would charge me, but when you're talking more than $2-3 extra, I draw the line.

I just looked up Waterloo, and I like that you're allowed to listen before buying, and return an album up to 10 days later, no questions asked. Great policies, and it looks like a top notch store. :up:

Although the Fetus is a Twin Cities legend, it has never been one of my favorites. Unfortunately, a lot of the good stores have closed over the years. There used to be a GREAT shop on Nicollet and 12th across from what is now The Local. They got squeezed out and moved and never survived in the "near" northeast side. I could find the rare stuff I was looking for every time there.

Anyway, since I have been back in town, I have stopped by Fetus. I like how they have the cut outs.

I need to head over to Lyndale avenue. See what the former Oarfolkjoke...whatever they call it now - has.

I love the store we have here in Indy - Luna Music. Good stuff for such a crappy music town.

I have never been high on Cheapo. They are there for used stuff. The sound of people flipping through the new arrivals at high speeds have alway entertained me.
 
What a fun day. I don't have a record player...and the stores were super crowded so I didn't buy any exclusive albums. However I did buy a few used cds.

Was fun though, just seeing so many people out listening and talking about music....and buying it.
A few in store performances too...including a "special guest" who turned out to be Joel Plaskett. He's pretty big around here. Was fun watching him then chatting with him for a bit afterwards.
 
I got "Imperial Bedroom, "Magical Mystery Tour" and a Gwen Stefani doll all for 10 percent off. Because I bought a Beatles' CD, I got a beautiful numbered lithograph of the picture below:

Rhino Records also had a goody table based on how much you spent so I picked up a Metallica poster for my brother and got a reusable shopping bag for myself. I didn't pick up any of the exclusives because nothing really stuck out to me, but I did go by the store yesterday and saw that they still had quite a few of those releases left so it might be worth checking out for anyone in the neighborhood in So Cal.

This was the second Record Store Day I've gone to at Rhino and I was excited to see the turn out. There weren't as many people in the store when I went last year.
 
I never got around to going to the store, I wasn't overly interested in any of the exclusives as I don't have a record player.

Plus, every time I go to a record store is more or less Record Store Day as I have absolutely no self control. :happy:

Not an excuse. I don't have one either. I get to listen to my records maybe 5 or 6 times a year, but still buy them anyway. :wink:

Cool, thanks for that! I especially liked how I mentioned how nice the employees at the Electric Fetus are, and that was a specifically mentioned point about the store. Apparently they're known for that. :up:
 
Reckless is pretty overrated, in all honesty. Good store, but if that's one of the 15 best in the nation, then the nation's pretty fucking blah. Good store, yes. But just "good."
 
I just finally listened to my new It's Blitz! LP. It sounds so great and I'd recommend picking it up.

If I didn't already own an original copy, I would too. I'm probably going to try for the Broken Bells, Beach House, Fela Kuti, Phoenix, and This Will Destroy You. Maybe the two Pavement ones and a couple others, we'll see how poor I'd like to make myself that day.
 
Not being a vinyl collector, there's not a single thing on there I'm interested in. :(
 
I'm so pumped for Record Store Day, not because I collect a lot of vinyl (I have a few choice LPs from my parents' collection that didn't make their way to the trash, like Hey Jude), but because Newbury Comics discounts all kinds of stuff like whoa, including used CDs and DVDs.
