Hey El Mel, I went down a Joni K-Hole on YouTube, and stumbled across this gem. Thought you'd like it since you're a big Court & Spark fan:

Her guitar sound is from another galaxy.

Lovely. It's a testament to her talent that she can remain so compelling and enveloping with only her voice and an electric guitar. Everyone knows she can write a tune, but she is a really excellent guitarist as well.

Gotta love her embracing the aging rasp of her late-career voice for "Dreaming of the pleasure I'm going to have/Watching your hairline recede, my vain darling." That whole verse is one of my favorite things she ever wrote.

How are people's albums of the decade shaping up? I'm doing my shortlist now, but off the top of my head, and I'm more than a couple wines deep here, MBDTF takes the title, with Kaputt and Bon Iver, Bon Iver extremely close seconds.

We were just talking about this a month ago, so I'll simply quote myself from the last thread when I posted my working list:

Romance is Boring
MBDTF
Rihanna - Anti
FJM - Honeybear
Cat Power - Sun
M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
LCD - This Is Happening
Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer
SZA - ctrl
La Femme - Mystere

Not that they're set in stone but it's a good starting point.

If I wasn't limiting myself to 1 per artist I'd probably have LC! No Blues on there as well. Other contenders:

CRJ - Emotion
Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs
Stricken City - Losing Colour
Passion Pit - Gossamer

Looking back over that, I probably drop SZA and put CRJ on there. Emotion is just too addictive. And SZA guests on Anti so she's still there in spirit. I'm bummed Phoenix only released 2 albums this decade and one of them was subpar, preventing me from having 3 French acts on my list. Had Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix come out a year later it might have made it. Tom Waits's Bad As Me is one I should have mentioned, though I doubt it makes the list, and Blackstar, which has 4 towering tracks but 2 that I'm a little meh on so not sure if that's enough to qualify it.

Another question to ponder is, is your 2010-2019 list better than your 2000-2009 one? Not that I have the latter handy. Off the top of my head it would have LC!'s first, a Phoenix album, Late Registration, Love & Theft, In Rainbows, PJ Harvey's Stories From The City, The Love Below, and The Bomb if I'm feeling generous. It sure looks like it would be stronger in terms of star power.

We should probably open a separate thread for this before the end of the year so it's easier to find.

REALLY need to listen to her more.

Which ones have you already heard?

I'm relistening to my top 20 from each year throughout this year. Some have been real treats to hear... Others disappointing in hindsight. My #1 album for the decade so far is The Suburbs. I don't think that's going to hold, but we'll see.

I’m going to think about this for a bit.

For some reason I still thought it was the 2000s.

The Suburbs and their debut album 'Arcade Fire' were definitely a highlight of the 2010s. Man, whatever became of those guys.

They are still pretty good... I just think a six piece with some ten other former members and a lack of a clear-cut sexy strong frontman pretty much had them not gobbled up by the machine. And they’re not really big on supermassive world tours. They’re more just into their music and staying true(r) to themselves. I think that had them sort of forgotten about a bit when their music quality fell from heaven and came down to earth.

Just listened to LEGACY! LEGACY! By Jamila Woods. Highly recommend it to basically everyone in this thread, but Axver.

Like Icarus, they flew too close to the sun. The fall appears to be ongoing.

Interference should start a band. I'll take lead vocals and write most of the songs and play lead guitar. The rest of you guys and gals can fill in.

Hahaha cool, time saved.

I'm surprised this thread isn't talking heaps about Kelsey Lu. Even I'm digging her album.

 thought you'd get a kick out of that.

I'll add whoever that is to my list, since I'm struggling for things to listen to this year, for whatever reason.

She's got a cool and fairly unique sound. Her I'm Not in Love cover really threw me for a loop in the best way possible.

Great question... I'll start a thread later today / tomorrow if no one else does. Then I'll try to answer that question.

I am surprised someone with as good music taste as you would have Bomb anywhere nearly a best of the decade list. It would make somewhat more sense for someone like me (was my first U2 album) but it wouldn't get anywhere near my shortlist (though COBL would comfortably make a songs list).

None :|

Lotus Plaza has to be on albums of the decade.

Spooky Action at a Distance? Won't make my list but I loved that record. One of those ones that I don't think is really a standout... but is just such great, enjoyable listening. If that makes any sense. I kind of think the same thing about the new James Blake album, which is by far my most listened-to album of the year so far, and I do like it, but I don't think it's especially outstanding.

Yea. Crazy that such a little gem from 2012 still finds its way on my rotation. [emoji3590]

Ooooooh! I remember you playing that for me... I didn't like it?

:uhoh:.

I am not finished with U. F. O. F. But I love it.

I mean, let's put it this way: as I said in the thread someone made in The Other Place about re-evaluating their post-2000 output, I think this is the last album of theirs I can sit through without wanting to remove or re-arrange tracks. It doesn't have the peaks of No Line or arguably even SOI or SOE, but I think it has consistency, and a little bite, and nothing outright offensive to my ears. The lyrics are personal and only occasionally cringey.

Is the production uninspired? Mostly. Are there loudness war issues? Yes but someone made a nice vinyl rip you can listen to. It really hasn't aged for me, the songs I love still resonate. The weakest of the batch for me is ABOY, which at least has energy. Compare that to other albums' weak spots like Cock Crazy, Stand Up Referee, Get Out and that's what I mean about consistency.

And another thing I'll repeat: if Fast Cars and Mercy were on the album proper, I don't think I'd need to mount a defense. But as it stands I think it's a pretty impressive effort from some guys in their mid-40s. It connects in a way few bands are able to do, even if we know they're capable of more artistically daring things.

Y'all need to get on that, son. Check out Blue and Court & Spark if you want to hear the strength of her songwriting, and since you're into jazz enough you'll be down with her fusion efforts as well, the best being Hejira and The Hissing of Summer Lawns.

Those four are the most essential and will let you know if you want to hear more.
