That's amazing.

Does anyone know offhand how this debuted on the Billboard charts? Obviously not #1 or we'd have heard about it but I'm curious if it at least made the top 5.

Fine, I looked it up myself.

It debuted at #5. Didnt look for the actual sales numbers but I imagine anything in 6 figures has to be considered a success at this point.

i like when a band is comfortable enough in their own skin to release whatever they want without fear of commercial success.

i like this album. a lot.

It's estimated to be around 55k in sales, which is far short of what Accelerate did.

Ouch.

And Headache, I'm not really sure what your point is, as I wouldn't call Collapse some kind of adventurous/uncompromising album. It's more like a tour of their entire career.

What you're saying would have applied a lot more to Monster or Up.

Who said adventurous is always good? Mature works just fine.

Right, but you make it sound like this isn't what they would release if they were concerned with/affected by the marketplace.

I can picture Bono and Stipe sitting at a fancy Italian restaurant in NYC, getting smashed on wine, maybe Stipe makes some off-hand remark about how R.E.M. can't sell as many albums as U2 or something, and Bono's drunk ass goes and starts giving them away on the street. Great shit.

Why can you not imagine people doing anything without alcohol involved, GAF?

Yeah, for some reason all of my U2/R.E.M. New York City restaurant fan fiction involves Stipe and Bono chugging expensive red wine.

Apparently Terry Cockless was in the back of the restaurant handing out copies to the employees, who seemed equally disinterested.

Sorry, when I read "boner" and "tonsils" in the same sentence all I can think of is Lance's Mom.

that's probably the first lance's mom joke that i've actually found funny. it always seems like a "you had to be there from the start of the joke" thing to me.
