More like They Should Have Been High.

To be fair, everything from Imitation of Life onward is decent. But it's too little, too late at that point. Like having to eat through a stale log of dog poop to get to a peanut butter cup in the middle.

You don't even like The Lifting? That and Imitation of Life are the only two songs I really like (All the Way to Reno comes close).

I'm going to take that to mean it's your favorite REM song ever.

Most of the songs, incl The Lifting and Reno, have all this unecessary window dressing that just doesn't work. Both the "rockers" and ballads are compromised. The tunes themselves arent very inspired anyway but they could have sounded better.

I enjoy Reveal, I enjoy the summery, relaxing mood of the album. But it has to be said, it has it's fair share of filler.

The fourth track, I can't even remember the name of it, is just super dull. Like Final Straw from Around The Sun, but not as bad. I'll Take The Rain is somehow allowed to almost hit the 6 minute mark.

Most of the songs, i'm glad R.E.M. wrote and released them.. They sound unique in the context of the band's entire catalogue.. But they're by no means classic, and I'll listen to and enjoy Reveal occasionally.

I'm saving my first listen of Reveal for a warmer day, perhaps one in which I have absolutely no idea what else to listen to. I still haven't heard that one or Around The Sun and you guys don't make me feel as if I'm missing out.

R.E.M. records tend to get broken out for me in the spring, actually, and this year there's a new one, which means they'll probably be in my top 5 on last.fm by May. I have no idea why they don't really work for me as a cold weather band; once I run Automatic into the ground as I ponder the cycle of life and death in October, that's usually it for about 1/3 of the year. I just associate them with fun times for the most part, I suppose.

What about Murmur and Reckoning? Those two albums are far from "sunny", especially as the latter was alternately titled "File Under Water".

I would almost listen to Reveal and Around The Sun BEFORE the new one comes out, so your R.E.M. journey has a happy ending instead of one that concludes with being trapped in a sauna with three old dudes and their musty farts.

Ha, early R.E.M. is actually my go-to in spring. I love hiking with Murmur once the trees stop looking so shitty. Perfect music for the occasion. However, immediately after that post, I thought of New Adventures as a decent winter weather record, as well as Fables.

Good thinking. I'm was ambivalent to Accelerate as a career-ender. I suppose it would be comparable to Inception in that sense.

I like Reveal and think Around the Sun is decent. To be perfectly honest, my least favorite REM record is probably Monster...

I'm the exact opposite. R.E.M is totally fall music for me. I think its mainly because Automatic, Monster, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, and Up were all released in Sept/Oct and so my first memories of listening to each of these albums was during the Fall. Up also has a very winter feel to it IMO. Reveal is the only R.E.M. album I associate with Spring or Summer.
