Ever read Hearts in Atlantis? This is the only reason I know who he is and have listened to some of his (awesome) work

I first heard of him thanks to Billy Bragg's song "I Dreamed I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night."

Very fitting post after losing Whitney Houston - Phil Ochs too was an amazing artist who tragically also died too young.

Phil Ochs was a true poet. I grew up listening to his "I ain't marching anymore" album and even though I was too young to understand most of his songs I still enjoyed listening to them.

My sisters used to like singing along to "Draft dodger rag" and "A small circle of friends". One of my personal favorites was "That was the president", written in memory of JFK.

Phil Ochs sang humorous songs ("Draft dodger rag"), story songs ("The highwayman") and songs about social issues ("The iron lady" - about the death penalty and "In the heat of the summer" about the riots in Watts, and "Talking Birmingham Jam" about racism in the deep south.

Sadly, he also struggled with alcholism and bipolar disorder and took his own life in 1976.

My last upload on this short tribute to mighty Phil Ochs is ending with one of his absolute masterpieces. The 1968 disappearance of the USS Scorpion was the inspiration for 'The Scorpion Departs But Never Returns', filled with inegmatic symbolism, deep passions, and mixed with very cinematic descriptions, most of which express the imagined conditions and changing states of mind (apprehension, fear, denial, etc.) as the Scorpion crew realizes its rapidly declining fate. 'Scorpion', along with 'When in Rome' from Ochs's previous album is often cited as a masterpiece of Och's songwriting
