Pearl Jam Plot Music Festival for Summer 2011

Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary celebration is shaping up to be a gift that keeps on giving. In addition to the 'Live on Ten Legs' concert album slated for Jan. 18, some potential reissues and a slew of Eddie Vedder solo tour dates already set for March in Australia, the band has now announced that it will lead and curate its very own music festival next summer. Perhaps taking a page out of the Phish handbook, Vedder and company are apparently looking for a smaller, centralized town in Middle America where their grunge-tinged brand of classic rock can reign supreme.

The rumored festival was confirmed by longtime Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis on the group's new Sirius XM radio station earlier this week. Using the far-reaching satellite radio platform to break the news, Curtis only revealed that festival would be "somewhere in the middle of the country." He did rule Seattle, the band's hometown, out of the mix.

Additional details on the festival -- additional bands, length, etc. -- are being withheld by the band until they can make a bigger announcement.

Wooooooooooooow. That is incredible news.

I am so fucking there, wherever it is. Their own festival? Yeah, that's kind of a can't miss event.

Wow.

i like how they say it's going to be in the middle of the country so that everyone can get there, but i'm still kinda surprised that they're not going to do this at the gorge.

Pearl Jam Reveal More Details Of 20th Anniversary Celebration

January 21, 2011

Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam recently announced on their website that the veteran rockers are planning a number of events in 2011 to mark their 20th anniversary. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, bassist Jeff Ament and PJ manager Kelly Curtis reveal some of their plans for the rest of the year.

As previously reported, Pearl Jam will release deluxe editions of Vs. and Vitalogy, as well as a long-in-the-works documentary from Cameron Crowe. Pearl Jam will also headline their own festival some time this summer. Curtis says the band members are not usually ones for nostalgia, adding that "They’re always thinking about the next record – not old stuff."

The deluxe releases of Vs. and Vitalogy will include previously unheard demos and alternate takes of hits, an entire 1994 concert from Boston and a cassette from Eddie Vedder's '90s "Monkeywrench Radio" shows.

As for Crowe's documentary, Ament says, "I just saw a rough cut. It was so f--king weird seeing footage of stuff I didn't know anybody was taping at the time. The whole movie is Cameron’s love letter to us – but it’s equal parts complimentary and really painful. It shows our growing pains and some real bad times, including Roskilde [the 2000 Danish festival where nine fans were trampled to death during the band’s set]. It was just really hard to watch." The film is slated to debut in late summer.

As for the band's first-ever festival, Curtis describes it as a "weekend bash" that will take place somewhere in the middle of the U.S. It is expected to be a two-day event, with Pearl Jam playing a headlining set each night. "We’ve played enough festivals that we know what makes them exciting," Ament tells Rolling Stone. "We want to give people places to go that aren’t necessarily musical – second stages and all that kind of stuff. We’re asking our friends if they want to play a couple of shows with us."

Following this year of nostalgia, Pearl Jam are eager to get started on new material and looking forward. "Ed and I were just going through old photos, journals and clippings for the box set," says Ament. "By the end, we were both like, ‘Ugh, we’re done with the past for a while.’ We’re ready to work on new songs and get excited about what's ahead."
