This is my first time venturing into this area of Interference. So if I'm out of line posting this thread, just lemme know.

Every since 2003 I have done a best of list. Some years magical, some years a bit dissapointing. It gets a little harder each year as I get older and have less time to listen and more responsibilities in other areas of life.

I want to try and harness the power of the great people here to help me add 2 or 3 more great songs to my list this year.

First a little about my taste. I despise 90% of what Pitchfork praises. I love the other 10%. I like well done, concise songs. I like songs with melodies. I like singers with good voices. I like voices that convey emotion. I am not into noise-rock, grind-core, 10 minute ambient-electro, etc... Also not a hip hop guy even though i can appreciate some select stuff.

I like indie rock, indie pop, some alt-country type stuff stuff, some folk, and even more mainstream rock/alternative type stuff.
I have a hard time when songs get past the 5 minute mark. To me, it has to be extraordinary for me to listen consistently to a 6 minute or longer piece of music. This is what is holding me back from War on Drugs at the moment, but I'm working on getting past it. LOL

Anyway, here is my current list. I usually like 15 tracks, and i'm stuck at 12. Although I am quite happy with these 12 this year.

Hunger Of The Pine - Alt-J
Peaches - In The Valley Below
Shut In - Strand of Oaks
The Devil Is All Around - Shovels & Rope
Do You - Spoon
Marry Me Archie - Alvvays
Wide Eyes - New Pornographers
My Wrecking Ball - Live on Conan O'Brien - Ryan Adams
Happy Alone - Saintseneca
Every Time the Sun Comes Up - Sharon Van Etten
The Troubles - U2
I Decline - Perfume Genius

All help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

p.s. - This is the first time I've put a U2 song on any of my lists.

If you like Alt-J, you might like Glass Animals (Pools is a great song from them). Broncho is another that comes to mind in terms of concise power-pop. The song Class Historian is a favorite of mine.

Something I heard recently that is reminiscent of Spoon is Springtime Carnivore, a song called Name on a Matchbook.

Yes!!!

These are great. I like all of them. I am putting all three on my list of possibilities. Thanks so much.

womanfish, agreed Pitchfork is a pompous site and full of self-important windbags. It does occasionally have some info that I find useful IMO But I guess at my age I'm not "hip" enough to match up with their general tastes in the Indie Rock genre.

I think you're the one that for me into Glass Animals but yes, the album is great!

Strand of Oaks

I realize that's not helpful to the purpose of this thread, but I just love that band's stage presence and it's nice tosee them mentioned.

I agree. You can bet if it's a 10 minute "song" that sounds like someone on GHB is recording their music into a Fisher Price tape recorder, with random noise in the background, Pitchfork will rate it a 9.2! Oh and of course Beyoncé.

They annoy me to no end, but they also do point me in a direction every once in a while, so I still look through their picks.

Any and all recommendations will be appreciated. So keep it comin! THanks

womanfish, check out the album from Cymbals Eat Guitars that came out this year. It's great.

Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams is some creepy goth alt country that you may love. I second the Cymbals Eat Guitars pick.

Red Eyes by War on Drugs is among the shorter, more immediate tunes on Lost in the Dream. Super powerful guitar lines that remind me of Broken Social Scene (think Cause=Time) and J Mascis. Great stuff. Top song of the year for me.

Also been digging the Preatures. Great rock BAND, and the singer (a she) is fantastic! Check out Cruel, Somebody's Talking, Ordinary, and Is This How You Feel. Good, fun, nostalgic stuff.
