My vote for single of the year 2008

My vote for single of the year 2008 goes to Girls Aloud's 'the Promise'.

Here is where we are in 2008:

Your average 'authentic' garage rock combo (step up, Coldplay, The Killers, etc) is in reality equally as manufactured, as full of artifice, as your average pop idol type band, so that bands like Girls Aloud are both more honest (in that they do not claim to be anything other than manufactured), and at least in this case, more capable of producing quality pop music.

Also, I honestly didn't hear a better pop single last year.

I know this one guy here that'll be pretty happy with that choice.

I think Electric Feel was the single of the year, though. Man, that's a good little attractive-to-the-mainstream-but-still-appealing-to-a-somewhat-indie-crowd song.

I love Girls Aloud, but this song hasn't grown on me yet.

I don't think so.

I've heard of Girls Aloud, but I've never heard anything by them. Trying to give them a fair shake, I watched that video. They aren't even very good singers. Yikes. No way I would say that was the best single of 08. Sorry, just giving my honest opinion. If you like them and that song, more power to you.

Good call, Finance Guy. Super hot track from the Aloud. It was a very successful single, too. In the UK at least. And it couldn't have happened to a sweeter, more hard-working group of girls. I'm proud of 'em.

I think the song is pretty alright, but I thought the girls would be a little more attractive. Straight and all, but none of them really stood out in that department.

Same here, except for one little album intro bit that GAF put on his Desert Island list but that doesn't count.

But anyway I watched the video. Not bad. I don't know if it's single of the year but I didn't mind the song. Next thought was... OMG LIGHT CURTAIN AND CONFETTI!!!!111 IS BONO OKAY WITH THAT???

See, I thought MGMT's Kids captured people's imagination a wee bit more....

It's a catchy tune for sure.

The most surprisingly appealing mainstream singles from outsiders who changed their sound were for me:

Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon:

and Happiness by Goldfrapp

That one was the Song Of The Year here in the Netherlands (as voted by a slightly alternative radio station).

My top 5 picks were (in alphabetical order):
Adele - Chasing Pavements

(also an excellent video)

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

(the Dutch version by Anton Corbijn. And yes, it's a remake of one of his earlier vids)

Duffy - Mercy

(more sparkling than the US version. Warwick Avenue is also amazing, BTW)

GEM - She Said Oh Oh Oh, I Said Yeah Yeah Yeah

(excellent song by this Dutch band, though not one of the best videos)

Voicst - Everyday I Work On The Road

(a live video because I love the horns as used live)
