Mixtapes: Personal Statements or Enemies of Art?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Here's what I ended up rolling with. Flow's not great in some spots, but given LadyFriend has never participated in a B&C Desert Island, I don't expect that will be a big deal.

Flaming Lips - Race for the Prize
Los Campesinos! - Cemetery Gaits
Something for Kate - Monsters
Broken Social Scene - Ibi Dreams of Pavement
Destroyer - Painter in Your Pocket
Van Morrison - Dweller on the Threshold
Tallest Man on Earth - There's No Leaving Now
Tom Waits - The Piano Has Been Drinking
U2 - Running to Stand Still / Dirty Old Town (Live From Point Depot 20th Dec 1989)
audio of me doing Bound 2 at trivia
Flying Lotus - Do the Astral Plane
Eiffel 65 - Blue Da Ba Dee
Ben Pearce - What I Might Do
Disclosure - Second Chance
James Blake - Retrograde
Radiohead - Weird Fishes
Autre Ne Veut - Play By Play
Chad Valley - Fall 4 U

Solid mix of artists we've talked about, a couple of in-jokes, few songs by some of her favourites, some of my favourites, tracks I've played her before, and a heap of tracks I reckon she'll dig. Did it in 40 minute halves so the trivia bit will break it up nicely/extremely poorly.

Hot damn do I love that Flying Lotus track.

I'm a big fan of little interludes breaking up mixes. I sometimes use short, lovely instrumental pieces or spoken word things. Love the idea of the trivia bit.

I don't know if I ever noticed the angel and devil on his shoulder, but I definitely remember that cover.

Another mixtape for a LadyFriend, a new one this time. Three of the four opening tracks are on the other one I made... but they're just such good songs. Play By Play makes the cut as well.

The Flaming Lips - Race for the Prize
Father John Misty - Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings
Broken Social Scene - Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)
Destroyer - My Favourite Year
The National - This is the Last Time
Los Campesinos! - Cemetery Gaits
LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Passion Pit - Sleepyhead
Autre Ne Veut - Play By Play
Bat for Lashes - Laura
Grizzly Bear - Fine For Now
Paul Dempsey - Out the Airlock
Destroyer - Kaputt
Radiohead - Worrywort

Was going to go with A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart for the little break-things-up track but Frank's Wild Years is shorter and funnier and quirkier. I also put six seconds of Nickelback's How You Remind Me at the start, since hating on Nickelback was how we hit it off.

One of these days I ought to post my 'slit your wrists' playlist from the early 2000s.

... ah, here it is:

Shot in the Arm - Wilco
Spring Rain - The Go Betweens
Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime - Beck
Hurt - (Johnny Cash version)
Wake Up Dead Man - U2
Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack
History - The Verve
No Distance Left to Run - Blur
New Slang - The Shins (wouldn't have included them now, but whatever)
Suzanne - Leonard Cohen
Needle In The Hay - Elliott Smith
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
Sweet Jane - (Cowboy Junkies version)
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star

Another mix for a friend. She wants more hip-hop. Mix of some classics she might know, good lesser-known songs by well-known artists, Madvillain's Accordion, which I introduced her to today and she loved, and one novelty track... I'll let you guess which one that is.

Notorious BIG/Junior Mafia/Lil Kim - Get Money
2Pac - Hit Em Up
Dr Dre - Nuthin But a G Thang
Ice Cube - It Was a Good Day
Eminem/Jay-Z - Renegade
Arrested Development - Mr Wendal
De La Soul - Ring Ring Ring
Danny Brown - Grown Up
Madvillain - Accordion
Jay-Z - Public Service Announcement
Mos Def - Mathematics
Tribe Called Quest - Excursions
Kendrick Lamar - Rigamortis
Busta/Q-Tip/Kanye/Lil Wayne - Thank You
ScHoolboy Q - Man of the Year
Captain Murphy/Earl - Between Friends
Outkast - Da Art of Storytellin pt 1
Wu-Tang - Protect Ya Neck
Nas - World is Yours
Kanye - White Dress

This isn't done, but I couldn't keep Mikal waiting, I know he was desperate to see what I was up to over here.

The idea was to make a playlist of songs that I consider to be cheesy, but good enough to transcend, where other songs fail.

Here is the beginning stages of that list:

Take a Chance on Me - ABBA
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meat Loaf
Radio Gaga - Queen
I Believe In A Thing Called Love - The Darkness
Sweet Talkin' Woman - Electric Light Orchestra
Only in My Dreams - Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
Fox on the run - Sweet
Love Bites - Def Leppard
What About Love - Heart
Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
Since You're Gone - The Cars
Africa - Toto
Heat of The Moment - Asia
Video Killed the Radio Star - Buggles
Orinoco Flow - Enya
China In Your Hand - T'Pau
Shiny Happy People - REM
A Little Respect - Erasure
Live to Tell - Madonna
Beth/Rest - Bon Iver
