We're going to go ahead and wrap this up. In the end, a disappointing turnout, so we'll put DI on hiatus for the immediate future and see what next year brings.

I'll be back later on tonight to run down the results.

Really sad to hear the turnout wasn't great this time around.

I really only got comfortable with making and judging playlists this past year and was really looking forward to see what everyone came up with next. What a shame.

I hope the next, eventual Desert Island is really successful. This is one of my favorite threads on the forum.

Me too. I love DI. It's giving me a project to work on on my lunch breaks at work. Otherwise, I'd just sit there and stare at the wall. :|

Anyway, I can't wait to find out that I lost this round! :hyper:

We've got to get proactive with DI in the future. Get the mods involved and have them advertise it throughout the forum. Probably should wait until something is going on in the U2 world, but not necessarily. The playlists might be a lot weaker, but at least the new blood will follow through and show some excitement for the competition.

Agreed. It's grown stagnant because it's insular. It's very easy to go ahead and have one of those news bulletins across the forum. Can't see any reason why the Mods wouldn't get behind that.

A lot of people consider the first couple of DIs the most fun and interesting, and that was well before the DI click had been established.

Exactly. I know that I don't want to stop playing, but at the same time I really want to find more people to play the game with, not less.

So I just did the totals now - yes, I hadn't done them this whole time. And holy shit, that was close.

Then again, with only 9 players in the final tally, it's gonna be close no matter what.

"I'm Afraid I Can't Do That, Dave"

I bet you can't begin to guess what this is about. Really, the first track explains it all. Now, I'm not being sexist, I don't hate all boys. Just one. 19. Rihanna - "Breakin' Dishes" - Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded (3:25)

I bloody well hope the DI continues and re-emerges soon, I'm already weighing up the tracks that I would use for the next DI.

I've got to remind myself not to be all like, "OH MY GOD LAST PLACE WHAT??!" when there's only so many spots it could be, but last still is a shock.

Yoda vs. Godzilla (or, it sounded a lot better in my head)

most things i think of sound a lot better in my head. this playlist is probably one of them. there's no theme, just tunes i like. there's no correlation between the title, ms paint creation posing as artwork, and songs, other than they were all assembled together bizarrely by me. there's no dropkick murphys, either.

2. Rush - "The Spirit of Radio" - Permanent Waves
3. Led Zeppelin - "Houses of the Holy" - Physical Graffiti

Saxamaphone...Saxamaphone

sax.gif

When I was 11 or 12 years old, I made one of the most important decisions of my life. It was time to select which instrument I was going to play in concert band the following school year. I was ready. I wanted to play drums. My mother...she wasn't so ready...she crushed my dreams. The time came to decide, and I chose the alto saxophone, begrudgingly. Before my time in Middle School began, I was required to take a summer introductory course. That was where I met my future high school band director, and I had no idea at the time that this would be a significant event in my life. In the meanwhile, I began sixth grade band, and immediately rebelled against the sax when I was to play 2nd parts, meaning I never ever played the melody, ever. But, those flutes down there, they did. So, to the flute I went, and to the flute I stayed for the next three years. I hated it, and I was awful at it, but the option to change was no longer available and I was trapped.

Then, in 8th grade, that same high school band director came to recruit people for marching band, and I saw my in. He allowed me to switch back to saxophone for marching band only, and in concert band I soon found my way to the bassoon, and the flute became a dark, distant memory.

I could continue to go on about how much the saxophone changed my life (and marching band as well), but suffice it to say that if I had been forced to stay on that flute, I would, in all likelihood, have eventually given up on band, and my life would be an incredibly different thing. I say that knowing a lot more than you about that change, I realize, but trust me on this one.

Anyways, during college, I finally became a fan of Bruce Springsteen, and while my time playing the sax was nearing a close, my love for the instrument only grew and grew. It was just as I was becoming a great fan of Dave Matthews, and more specifically, LeRoi Moore, that he passed away. I was devastated, as I had passed on an opportunity to see the band just that year, and realized the opportunity to see one of the greatest around would never exist for me from then on. Now, as the recent passing of Clarence Clemons becomes a fact of life that I am beginning to be able to deal with, I find that the saxophone is suddenly making a come back in popular music, and I couldn't be more pleased. I just hope that its inevitable fall back to cliche isn't too painful.

In the meanwhile, I figured a list of some of my favorite saxophone pop music would be something fun for, at least me, to listen to. I hope you also enjoy. I know some of the transitions are a bit wonky, but I was working with limited time (I'm referring to the 80 minutes, not the month I've spent putting this list together), and a great many different genres.

I especially hope you enjoy the transition from "Soul Man" to "Shotgun".

Well, I think I've said enough, please do have a splendid time listening, and know that when I hear this list, my heart does indeed, near literally, soar.

1.) Marc Shaiman - "Nuns to the Rescue" - Sister Act (4:48)

Don't have much to say about this one. It was converted from an existing ambient list I had made for my father in order to introduce him to the genre, readjusted to include artists like Boards of Canada and DJ Shadow that I have been listening to recently. The old list was actually a bit looser with the term "ambient" than this one, but the above is pretty broad in its genre selections, if not its overall sound. There are definite uptempo parts, but I was generally going for a dark, hypnotic mood here, which I consider the wheelhouse of ambient electronic music. The title purposely suggests that I wouldn't unleash a full list of this sort on a standard DI, so enjoy this insight into the darker avenues of my listening habits.

1. Aphex Twin - "Xtal" - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (4:52)
2. Pantha Du Prince - "Stick To My Side" - Black Noise (7:51)
3. Bonobo - "El Toro" - Black Sands (3:44)
4. Four Tet - "This Unfolds" - There Is Love In You (7:55)
5. Boards of Canada - "Turquoise Hexagon Sun" - Music Has The Right To Children (5:08)
6. Japan - "Ghosts" - Tin Drum (4:35)
7. Brian Eno - "Julie With..." - Before And After Science (6:20)
8. Tortoise - "In Sarah, Mencken, Christ And Beethoven There Were Women And Men" - TNT (7:29)
9. Massive Attack - "Mezzanine" - Mezzanine (6:01)
10. Burial - "Archangel" - Untrue (3:58)
11. DJ Shadow - "Building Steam With A Grain of Salt" - Endtroducing... (6:41)
12. Animal Collective - "Loch Raven" - Feels (5:01)
13. Radiohead - "Kid A" - Kid A (4:45)
14. Bjork - "Hyper-Ballad" - Post (5:22)

From here on out, go Cobbler. I don't think I had him first, probably third or so, but it would be funny.

“Okay Edge, Play the Blues!!!”

As many of you know, I gravitate toward cerebral music and tend to philosophize more than I should about the purpose and meaning of albums. However, I also love visceral, unapologetic songs. In this list, I wanted to capture the primal force of the Blues. Although not all of these songs adhere to that genre in terms of structure and style, they all exude the raw emotion – whether it be desire, fear, elation, or grief – that makes the Blues an integral part of music history and such a powerful, enduring form of expression.

1. The Stooges – “Dirt” – Fun House (7:04)
2. The Rolling Stones – “Stray Cat Blues” – Beggars Banquet (4:38)
3. The White Stripes – “Stop Breaking Down” – The White Stripes (2:20)
4. Jimi Hendrix – “Red House” – Blues (3:44)
5. Bruce Springsteen – “The Ghost of Tom Joad” – The Ghost of Tom Joad (4:27)
6. Alison Krauss and Robert Plant – “Trampled Rose” – Raising Sand (5:34)
7. Neil Young – “Vampire Blues” – On the Beach (4:15)
8. Muddy Waters – “Champagne & Reefer” – King Bee (4:39)
9. The Doors – “Back Door Man” – The Doors (3:34)
10. The Kills – “Pull a U” – Keep on Your Mean Side (3:23)
11. Depeche Mode – “Personal Jesus” – Violator (4:56)
12. John Paul Jones – “Nosumi Blues” – Zooma (5:48)
13. Charles Mingus – “Hog-Calling Blues” – Oh Yeah (7:27)
14. Leadbelly – “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” – Absolutely the Best (3:02)
15. Led Zeppelin – “When the Levee Breaks” – Led Zeppelin IV (7:08)
