MERGED ----> Rush Thread - ALL RUSH DISCUSSION HERE

Just wondering if anyone has heard the new Rush album yet?
I have heard about 6 songs so far and they sound pretty strong.
Sounds like they have got back some of their mojo.

Rush for Dummies - Snakes and Arrows

Those familiar with Rush will know that with every album comes a "Rush fo rDummies" song analysis from a certain message board poster.

Anyhow, thinking there might be a few rush fans here I've posted the new album version.

By the way, love the new album, MUCH better than Vapor Trails

Here we go

FAR CRY
-------

It must have happened when I was in Africa or something, but have you
noticed
how fucked up the world is these days, and how many weird
motherfuckers we
have in it? I tell you, this is definitely not what I expected.

Hey Alex, I threw in that 4th line just for you.

ARMOR AND SWORD
---------------

Most of us develop religious constructs which protect us from the
uncomfortable things we don't want to deal with. Antidepressants help
to
smooth out any rough edges that might be left over.

The problem is, we profess to believe in a God who takes care of
everything,
yet most of us get drugged to the hilt just to make it through another
day.
No wonder we go religiously insane as a collective society.

Sorry, Iraq. I'll get off the Zoloft and everything will be square
again.

WORKING THEM ANGELS
------------------

I like to ride my bike around from town to town, listen to my Ipod,
and think
about all the people I used to know who have since died.

(Alex asks a question)

No Alex, I'm not a serial killer. They died of natural causes.

What did you say? Why did I call it 'Workin' Them Angels', then?

I don't know. Don't worry about it. You probably want to stop asking
questions right about now.

By the way, I was reading the Naples Daily News this morning and I saw
a
piece on A3 about a local cop who was found tied up and dead, with a
taser
shoved up his ass. Yeah, that's right. I read that shit.

You work your angels, I'll work mine. Let's just go on tour and forget
this
shit ever got mentioned.

THE LARGER BOWL
---------------

If we're all equal, how come some people have it so well and others so
badly?
I tackled this subject already in Roll the Bones. I thought I made it
clear
that we are all subject to fate and chance. It never hurts to repeat
yourself, though.

What did you say, Geddy? These lyrics are somehow so badly arranged?
Well you
try making a pantoum into a song then.

SPINDRIFT
---------

There are tremendous cultural forces colliding. Eastern and Western
ideologies are warring, and I don't think any of us know how to solve
it. if
only we could convince each other of our respective truths. Eh, who
gives a
fuck. It's hopeless.

THE MAIN MONKEY BUSINESS
------------------------

Guys, that was a real smokin' jam. Very African-y. Just the way I like
it. I
may even wear my tartan when we play it.

What, Alex? Big fucking surprise, you say?

Tell you what taserboy, keep it up and I'll make sure you hang ten
down the
stairwell again.

Don't believe me? Listen to the song at 1:40 and again at 4:39. That's
me
breaking Geddy's wooden leg in two places during the song.

You know, I'm kind of grumpy lately.

THE WAY THE WIND BLOWS
----------------------

Let me expound on Spindrift for a moment. I want to make it clear that
this
whole Eastern/Western war is the fault of George Bush and the stupid
religious rednecks who inhabit the South. You hillbillies quit messing
around
with those peaceloving Muslims.

FAITHLESS
---------

You people who believe in God are idiots. You are constantly trying to
shove
your beliefs down my throat. Let's get something clear. I don't sign
on to
all this religious dogma bullshit.

Don't tell the angels though. I don't want them going to work for
someone
else. There's still some people I need to settle with.

BRAVEST FACE
------------

Anybody ever see Law and Order? That show rocks. Life isn't like Law
and
Order though. It doesn't all tie up real nice at the end.

Especially when you get hit with 50000 volts and pull a Q-Bert from
the third
floor down to the lobby. Then it gets REAL messy. Generally, you lose
your
deposit on your tuxedo also.

GOOD NEWS FIRST
---------------

Life bitchslapped you, didn't it? Told you. You're not so cocky now. I
told
you that life sucks. So just remember that the next time you start
enjoying
life, you assclown. You're not so special.

MALIGNANT NARCISSISM
--------------------

This song is probably the happiest tune on the whole album. Geddy, you
mind
if we reel this one in at about the 2 minute mark? I'm not real
comfortable with
all this positive energy.

WE HOLD ON
----------

(bicycling home from the studio, lost in thought)

Sometimes it's just not worth it, all the crap you have to deal with
and put
up with throughout the day. Not to mention all the dreams we put on
hold just
to work a crap job and put food on the table. What's the alternative
though?
You better just keep on trudging along.

(gets home, opens front door)

Where the fuck is all my furniture? Have I been robbed?

(sees note on kitchen table, reads it)

She ran away with Pye? What could she possibly see in that gibbering
fool?
Fucking hell! This sucks. I hate life.

(eats gun)

Rush-new album is fantastic!!

I had totally lost track of Rush and pretty much forgotten they were still in existence. They and U2 were 2 of my first loves in the early 80´s (Rush was earlier-1981 with Moving Pictures).

There new album is just amazing. Peart slams organized religion hard in his lyrics, but musically it is quite diverse and I think their best since Moving Pictures.

There even sounds like there are some small U2 influences throughout the album which I think gives it more of an epic quality.

That's high praise

Peart is such an intriguing guy, with the hell he's been through, on top of his talent. Yesterday, I dusted off a copy of Roll the Bones my uncle gave me back in grade 12 and listened to it twice during my seven-hour drive home...I'd forgotten how great Rush's lyrics are. Or maybe I wasn't evolved enough at the time to appreciate them

I'll bet they kick ass live...I'd love to see them, but no dates here so far.

Been a fan for a long time. Have the new CD, I have given it one listen and liked it. They are great live...not like a U2 show, not at all, but still a good live experience.

I'm getting into it, but it takes a while. Lyrics are a bit repetitive at times.

Far Cry is a great song. Listen to it LOUD! Can't wait to see them in August. Last time I saw them was in 1994.

It took qutie a while for me to get into but once I got past the 6th listen, bada bing, bada boom.
They´ve gotten some flak from some of their longtime fans about not living up to expectations, but I think Rush did a fantastic job of delivering some great straight up rock.
But at the same time, it is quite layered the production is top notch.
I only wish the next U2 could sound this good.

Nice show - I thought it was comparable to R30, but they played a lot of songs from the new album and left out a couple of older songs. The light show was incredible, and Neil Peart's drum solo was the best I've seen him do yet. Overall production was great. Unfortunately, security was confiscating(temporarily) peoples' camera batteries - even from compact cameras (including mine).
