Looking over my rough list, 21 of the albums are from this decade...

4/50 on mine. Exactly what it deserves.

Mine's shaping up to be a lot of '80s and up, but there's still a decent amount of classics. I wanted to actually represent what I listen to, not "what should be" on the list.

^

There might be some rather 'average' albums that creep on to mine sadly... Eiffel 65's Europop (I'm blue da ba dee da ba di) is a definite chance.

So definitely no live material? I can't sneak Dire Straits' Alchemy on my list?

You know what? It might very well crack my Top 5.

Actually I don't see what the big deal is about including official live releases. Bootlegs, okay I agree to leave them off but... official material should be okay, right? especially if somebody prefers them to the studio albums? For example: Somebody may prefer Live at Leeds to Tommy.

What say, El Mel?

It's borderline, but I'm sticking to my guns on this one. As a person who clearly thinks an album like Live At Leeds kicks Tommy's pinball-playing ass, it still falls under the "compilation" category, because the songs aren't exclusive to that release; only the performances are. An album like Neil Young's Time Fades Away, on the other hand, would count, because though the songs are live, they are exclusive to that album.

Okay I guess I see your point there about Leeds.

Actually I really wish I could include the Byrds Greatest Hits. It's the only Byrds release I own and I absofuckinglutely love it!

It was hard for me to make a list of favorite albums without including some Greatest Hits compilations - I own a lot of them.

So because of that, I have no Beach Boys on my list. I stuck with albums I actually own, and I just have a couple of hits compilations.

Oh, by the way - are soundtracks okay if all the songs are by the same artist?

To be honest, the only compilation that I would be tempted to include is "Louder Than Bombs" - in my mind, it is the single finest disc that The Smiths ever produced, which is really saying something.

does this mean Johnny Cash - At San Quentin isn't allowed?

I already axed Townes van Zandt's Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas (even though Townes live acoustic is something completely different than his relatively poor studio work) but San Quentin is .... well San Quentin!

Hatful of Hollow is much better in my opinion, Louder than Bombs has some of the bands worst songs on it. I even think 3 of their studio albums are much better than louder than bombs.

I think all of their albums are better than both of those compilations.

My initial list is 105 albums long.... Me? Indecisive?

I've whittled it down to 50, now it's the task or ordering them

As a heads up, my list will seriously disappoint all you music geeks out there...
