Yeah the honourable mention list is a bit whack really...Why?, Department of Eagles and The Dodos I thought were going to be dead certs for the top 50...with Why?, which i'm guessing is your favourite of the year...just a punt:wink:anyway I thought it would be in Pitchfork's top 10....weird list.

#1) Chinese Democracy - Guns N' Roses
#2) Accelerate - R.E.M.
#3) Beautiful Future - Primal Scream
#4) Dig Out Your Soul - Oasis
#5) The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow
#6) Hey Ma - James
#7) Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends - Coldplay
#8) Midnight Boom - The Kills
#9) Only By the Night - Kings of Leon
#10) Forth - The Verve (But if Oracular Spectacular by MGMT counts as 2008, then it gets the #10 spot.)

I'm not going to lie, 50-25 was pretty unimpressive in my opinion. Some really mediocre stuff mixed with great stuff that should have been rated higher. It'll be interesting to see how it all breaks out.

I've been fussing with this for awhile now, and I figure I might as well just go ahead and post it, even though I'm expecting to get a few albums for Christmas that might change it. Chances are most people won't have even heard of quite a few of my picks, which I guess isn't surprising, since I don't think many people around here listen to much experimental jazz.

Anyway, here it is:

1. Evangelista—Hello, Voyager
2. Deerhoof—Offend Maggie
3. The Black Keys—Attack & Release
4. Dr. Dog—Fate
5. Mary Halvorson—Calling All Portraits
6. Vampire Weekend—Vampire Weekend
7. Scott Amendola Band—Live In New York
8. Devin Hoff—Solo Bass
9. Beck—Modern Guilt
10. Jenny Lewis—Acid Tongue
11. Ray LaMontagne—Gossip In the Grain
12. Xiu Xiu—Women As Lovers
13. Ryan Adams—Cardinology

Things I still need to hear that could change this list:
Jolie Holland—The Living and the Dead
Lucinda Williams—Little Honey
Bill Frisell—History, Mystery

Albums I was really looking forward to that were big disappointments:
Kings of Leon--Only By the Night
The Killers--Day & Age

That Evangelista album is the best thing Carla Bozulich has ever done. It went from being my favorite album of the year to one of my favorite albums of all-time in just a few months. Both the music and the lyrics capture what I love most about Carla's work, that delicate and often volatile line between beauty and brokenness and the space those two emotions very often share. It's an album that laments difficult endings and still celebrates the hope of the new possibilities that rise from those endings.

My Favourite of '08

The Dodos- 'The Visiter'

Listening to this for the first time right now (almost finished), and it's completely owning me. I LOVE it, wish I would of listened to Cujo/PinballWizard in March and bought this back then. Great stuff. Can't believe the only "professional" list I've seen it on is Pitchfork's "honorable mentions". This is great, really hitting the spot. Glad I picked it up before the year had ended. Wow. Seriously, wow.

Great album, great drumming...Winter rules:drool:

Sadly very few people seem to have picked up on it as you said, other than Pitchforks readers poll I don't it's placed anywhere. One of those albums thats completely bypassed the critics.

Los Campesinos! only made it to #30?! What the fuck?

I was sure it was going to make the Top 5, if not contend for #1.

Really?

I thought it was just an OK album.

In a year of generally mediocre music. Very disappointing compared to 2007.

I really couldn't say if this year was any worse than last...there have been plenty of releases that I will listen to for years to come.

I don't really buy any of these bad years for music arguments.

Me neither. When people say it's a bad year for music, it means they're obviously just not listening to the right music.

FACT!!11!!@1!

Seriously though, good music always requires some sort of research to find. If you're lazy one year, it's probably going to be a "bad year" for you, and that's no one's fault but your own.

 If the artists you like aren't releasing anything in a given year, just do some reading. Find some sources for more obscure music and give it a try.
