I'm not very indietastic. What albums should I pick up?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

You know, recent ones.

Also, don't just post a link to the A/V Club or Pitchfork or a blog written by a 31 year old white person with a scalplock hairstyle. Don't want that heard, just need your word!

(that was a rhyme)

I am personally enjoying the new Snow Patrol a lot. I know a lot of people think they are too U2-esque / Coldplay-esque to be indie, but songs like Lifeboats, The Golden Floor and Lightning Strike are VERY indie.

TV On The Radio - Dear Science
Parts & Labor - Receivers
Glasvegas - s/t
Subtle - ExitingARM
Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

All of these are worth listening to.

Also, Secret Machines - Secret Machines is pretty good if you're into that (I am).

I like the album. I also consider myself a bit of a weekend vampire, but probably not in the same way that they meant it...

I heard it blew?

I guess I should give it a spin and confirm that it blows, though.

It does blow, but yeah, give it a spin anyway.

And, while you're at it:

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
Hercules And Love Affair - Hercules And Love Affair
Sun Kil Moon - April
The Dodos - Visiter
No Age - Nouns

Also, Snow Patrol is NOT indietastic. By any stretch of the imagination.

agree with most of those... Dodos, Cut Copy and No Age especially. The new Walkmen Disc kicks ASS... Bon Iver = unlimited listens... I also like the new French Kicks disc. the opener, 'Abandon' is sweeeet. Les Savy Favs disc Lets Stay Friends is a little edgier, Patty Lee was my favorite song last year. Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is a kick ass disc from a year or 2 ago. Fleet Foxes is a nice disc too.

ya, and Snow Patrol does = coldplay. Thats not a good thing.

Oh boy.

A is for Andrew Bird. Get The Mysterious Production of Eggs.
B is for Broken Social Scene. Get You Forgot it in People.
C is for Cat Power. Get Moon Pix or You Are Free.
D is for Do Make Say Think. Get Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn.
E is for Explosions in the Sky. Get The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place.
F is for the Flaming Lips. Get The Soft Bulletin. (F is also for Feist. Get a boner.)

I is for Iron & Wine. Get The Shepherd's Dog.
J is for Jack and Meg White. Get the White Stripes' De Stijl or Elephant.
K is for Kings of Leon. Get Aha Shake Heartbreak, their only good album.
L is for LCD Soundsystem. Get Sound of Silver.
M is for Man Man, whose Rabbit Habits is one of the best and most underrated albums of the year.
N is for the National. Get Alligator and Boxer. Fall in love.
O is for Okkervil River. Get Black Sheep Boy and The Stage Names.
P is for Picaresque, an album by the Decemberists you should get (as well as Her Majesty).
Q is for the Queen Mary, who Wolf Parade apologized to in Apologies to the Queen Mary. Get it.
R is for Radiohead. Obviously.
S is for Spoon. Get Kill the Moonlight and Gimme Fiction.
T is for TV on the Radio. Get the year's best album (Dear Science) and Return to Cookie Mountain.
U is for unpopular U2 albums and tunes (they give you valuable indie cred!), but you know this already.
V is for Vampire Weekend, who only have out a self-titled debut. It's just okay, but it's as indispensable an indie accessory as a v-neck from American Apparel.
W is for Wilco. Get it all.
Y is for the underrated Yo La Tengo. Get I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One.
Z is for Z, an excellent album by My Morning Jacket. Also get At Dawn and It Still Moves.

Yikes.

:shh: She was only looking for recent indietastic albums, but that was a good effort.

Mud spelled backwards is dum. :(

True, but Toto backwards is ototo, which means younger brother in Japanese. So you've got that going for you.

In regards to getting into indie music, I don't know if starting with brand new / recent albums is what I'd recommend (mainly just because I can't think of any recent ones that are good enough to recommend to someone to help them get into the genre).

In general though, these are some highly recommended artists that seem like pretty decent choices for getting more into the genre:

The Shins
The Decemberists
Okkervil River
Belle and Sebastian
Pinback
Modest Mouse
Built to Spill
Broken Social Scene

Would Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst fit in here?

You've gotta go with The Shins, DeVotchKa, Band of Horses, Bloc Party, The Go! Team, and Death Cab for Cutie. The last band pretty much defines the kind of indietastic nature I've held onto for quite some time now.

Y is for the underrated Yo La Tengo.

Recent-ness notwithstanding, that's a mostly solid list with some spectacular recommendations, apart from pretending that Kings of Leon is an indie band. Still, that little sentence right there is one of the funniest things I've ever read. Canonized bands, by definition, cannot be underrated--they become canonized by being overrated, from time to time, but never by being shit on or ignored. Hilarious. When an indie band is recognized as essential by as "mainstream" a publication as Rolling Stone, you can't talk about being underrated, anymore.

I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One is a brilliant record, too! To hell with new records, I say. Just look for good ones. You'll find precious few as deep, rewarding, and multifaceted as the one in question.

That's a great album, one of the best of the 90's.

And I liked the last one a lot too, but it's definitely not for YLT newbies.

Oh, and these are so far and pretty much by far the five best records of the year, in no particular order. They're all "indie."
