Before you get too acquainted with B4 DA ASS, make sure to listen to 1999 if you haven't already. Killer mixtape, slightly better than the album.

Jedi Mind Tricks will be releasing an album sometime this year. I'm excited because it's the first time in 6 years stoupe will be back as the producer.

My goodness, this is definitely one of my favorite hip hop albums ever. A little long, and a bit of filler in the middle, but so many highs, I don't care:

and a bunch more, but also for having this random ass track near the end:

"Temperature" is such a criminally underrated track, great verse from Talib Kweli too.

Alright, time to up Black Star's debut to 5 stars.

I've had this beat running through my head all day:

Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are... has been at five stars since it came out, where have you been? Respiration is easily my favourite hip hop track, ever. Randomly catching the video on Muchmusic one night is basically the entire reason I'm a rap fan.

Kweli is here in Toronto in a couple weeks, not sure yet if I'm going to check out the show, has anyone seen him live? My experience with (the admittedly few) rap shows has been pretty "meh" overall.

I saw him at the Warped Tour like 10 years ago and thought that for being a rapper, he was actually ok.

I guess that doesn't help you at all.

Indirectly hip hop-related:

There's an exhibit of Jean-Michel Basquiat's art at the AGO running until May. I can't wait to go check it out, I hope there's lots of info about his influence on early hip hop and graffiti (I'm sure there probably will be).

Drake dropped a surprise album?

What's especially surprising about the fact that I didn't hear about it is that I live in Toronto, where it's the top story on the 6 o clock news if Drake takes a shit that's a little looser than usual.

99.9% of his stuff is crap (seriously, how many times can "nigga" rhyme with itself?) but 0 to 100 is catchy as shit.

One bad hip-hop album I recently heard: Danny Brown, Old. I have no idea what the hell this guy was on about throughout the album, the beats were oddly disjointed, and his inflection grated on me, at times badly.

One great hip-hop album I recently heard: El-P, Cancer 4 Cure. Strong variety in mood and instrumentation, intelligent lyricism, and some well-placed guest spots (except for Danny Brown). I really like El's flow and tone, for lack of a better term.

I loved side A of Old; it was some of the finest music I heard in any genre that year. Torture and Lonely are heartbreaking songs. Sadly, I was ambivalent toward side B. Overall, I would say it is certainly a good record, just that the orgy of side B was slightly misguided. He really does a disservice to the material by mashing it together that way. Thankfully, the terrific Float On with its knockout Charli XCX hook saves the album at the last minute.

El-P's solo career leaves me cold. As far as lyrical underground rap goes, give me Aesop Rock any day, though I will always appreciate El-P for Run the Jewels and his terrific production for Cannibal Ox.

iYup, you need to hear the Ghostface/BADBADNOTGOOD collab and report back. It's a literal jazz band/MC hybrid that you would like. I sure did.

Anyone listened to the new Kendrick yet? I thought a few of you would have been all over that. I was planning on it, but didn't like the $15 price tag on iTunes.
