Ok, see, that makes perfect sense, and really was what I assumed it meant all along, but at the same time, I just. wasn't. sure.

For sure, it's always better to ask! Hip-hop's a whole 'nother universe.

i've been meaning to listen to Straight Outta Compton and The Chronic for months... i will once DI is over. i've also downloaded the three De La Soul albums after 3FtHigh. De La are playing ...is Dead in full in Feb and i'm gonna go.

also, fyi, there's a rambling review of Outkast's debut that i just posted in the random thread, i forgot about this one.

i'm looking forward to Lasers as well, i've really enjoyed every Lupe track i've heard.

Most definitely...it's going to be amazing. I listened to both Food & Liquor and The Cool this afternoon/evening in excitement.

I should listen to Outkast more often...I've only heard their early albums a handful of times.

Also, I fucking miss Tupac. We need more rappers like him today. Fuck Lil Wayne (even though he's on my DI list this time around...circumstances called for it).

Motherfucker, I hit 'em up.

could you recommend me an album? i've got about 15 of his songs, but they're all tracks we downloaded back when we thought we were gangstas back in the day.

btw i was reading up on that song the other day, and apparently it was a b-side! not just that but a lot of people (Biggie included) seemed to think it was a massive overreaction to the whole East v West thing that was going on.

you are going to be pleased with a number of tracks on my DI list i think

Oh man, well, it depends on what side of Tupac you're after. For a pretty well-rounded view, you can't go wrong with his Greatest Hits. It's surprisingly diverse and inclusive (although the editing of "pig" from "Trapped" is a continued source of frustration).

For politically conscious, yet fiery Black Panther-influenced 'Pac, go for 2Pacalypse Now.

For paranoid, introspective, about to go to jail 'Pac, go for Me Against the World.

A lot of people will recommend All Eyez On Me and say it's one of the best double albums ever created by a hip-hop artist, but there's a LOT of filler on it. The cream of the crop from the album is on the Greatest Hits.

Even with those three though, you're missing out on lots of gems like: "Holler If You Hear Me" and "Papa'z Song" (from Strictly for My N.I.G.G.A.Z.). But, that should get you started.

That is great.

I've yet to hear a hip-hop/rap album in its entirety, too. So this place is very helpful *Nods*.

I've always found The Chronic a bit tedious, maybe a few songs too long, but it's so smooth, and the singles are sick. That said, two contemporaneous rap touchstones were superior: Doggystyle and, yes, Straight Outta Compton.

Heard two really fucking terrific albums over the past couple of days:

YouTube - Deltron 3030-virus

YouTube - Pete Rock feat. CL Smooth - Lots of Lovin

Hell yes, dude. Deltron 3030 is awesome. Haven't heard it in years, though.

The fact that it came out the same year as Stankonia blows my mind. Is there any other excellent space-age hiphop like that? It's got to be a pretty minor niche, awesome though it may be.

Del the Funky Homosapian is probably worth checking out, though I don't have specific recommendations because I've only heard his stuff in passing. Anyway, he's part of the Deltron 3030 group. Dr. Octagon and Handsome Boy Modeling School are other sort of spacey things too. You're right though, it's a small niche.

Travis, have you listened to Blu at all? I've been spinning his collab album with Exile, Below the Heavens, quite a bit these past couple days, and it occurs to me that it probably falls in line with your soul-influenced hip-hop tastes.

YouTube - Blu & Exile - The Narrow path

Blu & Exile - My World Is...
