I dug this a lot. It took me a couple of tracks to get into this guy's vocals, but after that, it was a good listening experience. However...

Best band in Wales? It seems that way, at the moment. ...And, as you know, that's a whole lot of praise, coming from me.

I wouldn't put them ahead of LOS CAMP!

It seems that I forgot to detail the show, from a few weeks ago. Hardly surprising, but it was blistering, chaotic, and hilarious. The band burned the house down with incredibly tight and precise playing, a ton of psychotic energy, and lots of inverse heckling. After the show, Falco and I had a brief debate about whether or not my Mclusky shirt (upthread) was my keeping "the" dream or "a" dream alive. Funny chap.

At any rate, I obviously loved the painfully loud set, and all of the songs were played wonderfully and with great energy. I had so much fun, and so did the rest of the mid-sized crowd...which was VERY energetic, for a Chicago show. Fucking madness, up front.

The obvious highlight of the set was "Cloak the Dagger," which is a live-only track (though you can get a version of it on the live album, Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires) the bands plays to close out all of its shows. At first, it was a bit disappointing, because Falco revealed that they were planning to play "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues" before it, until some asshole in the crowd screamed out to request it, incessantly. Doubly frustrating, in hindsight, because they wound up playing it the very next night, in Minneapolis...but whatever. "Cloak the Dagger" was sheer anarchy, not to mention the longest version they've ever played (nearly 15 minutes), with Falco breaking down the drumkit one piece at a time as Jack played out the song, the audience eventually playing the cymbals at the front of the stage with sticks that Jack threw at us, and Kelso (bass) drinking a bottle of Jameson, leaping from the stage, giving away his bass to somebody in the audience, doing a handstand, trying to stand on my shoulders to crowd surf, reclaiming his bass, getting back on stage, drinking some more, leaping back into the audience, and finally emerging once more...wearing somebody else's clothes. Later, he would sign my chest. All lof this, of course, while Falco threaded a drumstick into his guitar strings to play a piercing, jagged, atonal "solo" and Jack sat on the bass drum and kept playing the one tom and snare that he still had at his disposal. Piercing feedback during much of this.

My God, it was wonderful.

Ok. So I almost bought the other FotL album last night at my local shop. Should I have? Should I wait till I go and get the Animal Collective ep on the 15th? Or should I go sooner?

Or should I go at all?

It doesn't really matter when, but you definitely should, yes. It's wonderful. Not quite as hard as Travels, but equally catchy and energetic; press has often focused on the keyboards, which are far more prominent there than any other Falco-penned tunes (with the absence of "You Need Satan More Than He Needs You"). The drumming is more technically impressive, and the kit is also mic'd a lot better, on Curses.

The other essential purchase, if you're keeping track, is Mclusky's Mclusky Do Dallas, which is both near-perfect and the blueprint for everything that is Future of the Left. Amazing, amazing, amazing record. I will never forget the first time I listened to it (on a train, in Tokyo), because I kept waiting for a bad, or even mediocre, song...and then, after a while, the record was done. The merely decent song never happened. And I just couldn't believe that an album THAT fucking good had been completely slept on. For years. Horrifying.

If you want to try it on, for size, then find the songs "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues," "Fuck This Band," "To Hell With Good Intentions," "Collagen Rock," "The World Loves Us and Is Our Bitch," "Alan is a Cowboy Killer," "Gareth Brown Says," and/or "Whoyouknow" (sometimes spelled Welsh-style, as "Huwuno").

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone that's supported me in this band over the past 5 years, everyone that I've met at shows all over the world and all the bands I've had the pleasure to play gigs with. I'd like to wish Andy and Jack the best for the future.

Right. Events. Evidence. History. Facts. Happenings. Good, bad and inbetween. Firstly, Kelson has left the band - his statement, if that doesn't sound too formal, precedes this blog entry. How do we(*1) feel about it, as a band? Well, sad, happy, annoyed and relieved at the same time. Like human beings, all told. Future of the left is still a band, a thing, the centre of our unremarkable lives and continues, if anything, with more effort and furious pride than ever before. We wish Kelson good luck and hope that he flourishes in whatever he ends up doing, unless it's monster truck racing(*2).

So, to the future, that gassy mess - In the short term, we're playing the following shows. Steven, of Oceansize and Kong should-be fame will be filling in, although the word 'filling' doesn't really do the role justice.

- a full list of shows is to follow. I'm excited. It's like I'm wearing new jeans and my balls have been optimised for rock musicing. It's like a fresh start in a new town with a sexy ghost robot.

Writing for the new record has begun and we're already many songs down the road, written and demo'd - titles include 'assisted suicide blues', 'home taping is killing susan', 'the goose that roared', 'forest is sorry' and 'destroywhitchurch.com'. They sound really fucking nice and, in time, you'll get to hear them through the usual channels (who am I kidding - you'll get to hear them through bittorrent).

These songs, such as they are, were recorded with our soon-to-revealed fourth member, whose main role(s) in the band are to play guitar and act like a fucking maniac. We began writing songs for what we thought would be another band (I hate the term 'project', because I enjoy hating thoroughly harmless terms(*3)) but it all ended up sounding so perfectly like where Future of the Left should have been going that it seemed ridiculous to not combine the two.

Yes. Trust. Reward. Satisfaction. Excitement. I guarantee it. The four-piece version of the band will be out and about sometime later this year. It's going to be fun. If you don't like it - see you around.

Maybe there's no point in even posting that video, because it's not the outrageous performance of "Cloak the Dagger" which closed their most recent Chicago show. As I have said before, it was well in excess of 10 minutes, it saw Kelso drink nearly an entire bottle of Jameson (during the song), and it eventually saw him not just jump into the audience to close out the song...it saw him jump into the audience, completely disappear, and finally emerge (without his bass, which made it back to the stage several minutes before he did) wearing somebody else's clothes. He dug his boots into me while climbing my back only to stagger about on stage and kick his bass. He was in the bathroom for the last few minutes of the song. It was INCREDIBLE.
