Oh, I didn't stay. They were the last band on that night, not on until 10:30. There wasn't enough to make me want to stick around for another 5-6 hours. Neko Case is the headliner tonight or tomorrow; had she been on the same night as FJM, I probably would have stuck around. Or at least gone back later to catch her.

They block off about 3-4 square blocks in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, and other than the 3 or 4 music stages, it's a couple of beer gardens and some random booths. Unless you're there to hear specific bands or just hang around being drunk, it's not all that interesting.

Really fucking great show last night. Started at 10:50 and the sign said he'd go through until 12:10 but he finished about 11:40, so Cori, you didn't miss out. I don't know any of his other work or any Fleet Foxes songs, so I was wondering how the set would go. Seems the Father John Misty moniker is really him starting anew; he played about 80% of the album and then a cover of Jump into the Fire, which seems to have influenced quite a lot of people, even though I'd never heard of Harry Nilsson until LCD covered him.

So out they come, opening with Fun Times in Babylon. Tillman walks out with scotch on the rocks, and is obviously hammered. He keeps it together the entire show, despite being both drunk and high (when he finishes his glass of scotch he goes backstage during an instrumental bit in one of the songs and gets and drinks from a bottle of Jameson), which is absolute credit to him, I don't know how you could do that.

After Fun Times he tells us he was "so fucking sleepy" and explains that the painted glitter under his eyes are eyeballs so he can go to sleep without any of us catching on. It was quite funny, and seriously, the dude is a fucking riot. His sexy-man dancing, hilarious asides in between all the songs... during the ending of You Can Do It Without Me he sings "ohhh you can do-- no, I can't do it, I need more than that" and the crowd went wild and he finished the song. And then he was like "that's the first time I've ever done that... seriously! I know you were all like, 'ohh great. Here comes the canned ham'... but you should feel very lucky you fuckers".

As for the songs themselves, they were absolutely brilliant. Songs on the album that I like or find amusing but don't really love, like Writing a Novel, just turn into absolute beasts live. (Seriously, Writing a Novel was close to the highlight.) The ending to Sally Hatchet was as epic as I was hoping it would be, Ladiesman was amazing, as were Everyman Needs a Companion and Now I'm Learning to Love the War. They closed the set with Hollywood Forever, which sounded fucking great. I think Long to Feel Your Arms Around Me and Tee-Pees 1-12 were the only tracks they didn't do. Jump into the Fire was awesome and a great way to end it.

Really glad jt, imps, et al spruiked this album earlier in the year, and I'm really glad I went. Great stuff.

You mean the lime and the goddamn cocconut song wasn't used to sell anything in Aussieland? I feel like I've seen that in a thousand commercials (, you guys).

And the fuck does spruiked mean?

I listened to one of his J. Tillman albums and thought it was a total snooze, for what it's worth.

They were sharing a bottle of tequila on stage when I saw them. Heh.

He / they are coming here in November. Despite it being at my absolute least favorite place in the world to see concerts (headliners usually don't start playing until about 11pm or later), I am happy.

I really enjoy the music of FJM thanks to Imperor and JT, so, a thank you to the both of them.

Trevor, that's too late of a starting time for an old man like me, but I hope you enjoy it!

This just in:

I'm going to start exploring J Tillman's older stuff. Listened to a song or two on the internetz just now and both songs were really haunting, really gorgeous songs....so, yeah.

There are a few of his earlier albums on Spotify. The first one I listened to, I didn't care for - too mellow. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it.

Then I listened to another one yesterday, and I liked it better than the other.

You were likely just too scared of fun the first time.
