And yet it's probably their most well-known and popular song. Ironic, I guess. Their use of the word 'faggot' in the song has garnered way more attention than the riff, though.

I didn't discover them until the 98 best of when my mum won it on the radio. I was only 12, but I remember her putting it on, because each song I was like "oh yeah, I know this one!"

That happened in 98 for another artist for me too... If only heard a couple of songs off Pop and liked them, but had no idea it was the same band as all the 80s stuff.

Yes. Yes it is. Perhaps a perfect opening two minutes. And the subsequent 12 aren't bad either

I hate to say it, but I get the feeling that's U2 now.

Or maybe one of those many washed-up rock bands that does casino tours. If you're playing in a casino, you're automatically uncool.

"Who buys U2 records anyway? It's just music for plumbers and bricklayers. Bono, what a slob. You'd think with all that climbing about he does, he'd look real fit and that. But he's real fat, y'know. Reminds me of a soddin' mountain goat."
"And as for Bono, he needs a colostomy bag for his mouth."

U2 is patently uncool. Have been for a while, but the Apple thing rubber stamped it.

If you like Dire Straits but haven't checked out Knopfler's solo work, get on that shit. It can be a little inconsistent, but there's some great stuff in there. Sailing to Philadelphia and The Ragpicker's Dream are solid. I've yet to pick up his latest (Tracker), but have heard good things.

Just listened to Tracker, albeit in and out in the background. Very mellow and subdued. Will take a while to hit me I think.

A young Knopfler/Dire Straits fan from Oz checking in! So many great songs. Lately I've had Wild West End, Lions, News, So Far Away, and Why Worry on rotation.
