Destroyer - Kaputt (AKA NSW: NEVAR Forget)

Finally got around to listening to Trouble in Dreams today. And fuck me, another great, great Destroyer album. Lot of awesome cathartic guitar hooks, crescendos (hate using that word because it comes from the Italian "crescendo" which means "growing", therefore crescendos makes no sense, but for lack of a better word), typical Bejar lyrics. It came after Rubies (actually their last album before Kaputt), so not surprising that it's more immediately likeable/accessible than say Your Blues or, daresay I say it, Streethawk.

Highlights for me were Dark Leaves From a Thread, My Favourite Year, Shooting Rockets, Introducing Angels and Libby's First Sunrise (which they play live every now and then) but I liked all the tracks.

How criminal that these guys aren't more popular.

Nice. For some reason when I was listening to it all I could picture was Wayne Coyne with those huge laser hands but with foam all over them, but it's a cool song.

Not sure if any of you folks subscribe, but Daytrotter posted a new Destroyer session today. Not particularly earth-shaking, but solid.

I had no idea Daytrotter had paid memberships now. Don't blame them, I guess, but I can't imagine it's easy getting people to sign up. I'm tempted to do it just to get the recent version of Libby's First Sunrise. How does it compare to the video posted above, agentorange?

It's the same arrangement as the video, which I like a lot better than the album. Somewhat worse sound quality, and slightly dirtier guitars, I think. If there's smokin', it's buried in the mix. Maybe a little more wand'rin' around in the DT version.

I hope New Pornos do. That would be nice.

Nice if you'd actually listen to the damn band he's part of :p

This is one of the frigginiest friggin' things he's done and it randomly pisses me off for no real reason.

Does it matter at all that Destroyer is substantially better than the Pornographers?

:reject:

Twin Cinema > any Destroyer album.

Not that the two bands sound anything alike/are worth comparing. Just because you like one doesn't mean you'll like the other. I adore power-pop, so the Pornos are more my thing, though I also love Destroyer.

The Dan Bejar songs are particularly fantastic. But yeah, between him, Neko Case and AC Newman, there's plenty of great material going around. Stylistically diverse but uniform in high quality.

I just really and truly think this is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard.

There are songs I love on Kaputt, but I'd be hard-pressed to say I love any of them as much as that song (and let's all remember, Kaputt was my 1st or 2nd favorite album that year, it's not that I don't like it, I'm just dumb-founded at Cobbler having not heard Twin Cinema at the very least)
