Not annoyed at all, just trying to get you to listen to them through whatever means necessary! For me, I probably never would have paid any attention to Destroyer had it not been for New Pornographers, so I don't really see them as different from each other as some of you do. I'd always liked Bejar's NP songs, I picked up Rubies entirely based on that. I find both groups extremely enjoyable, and just want to share the enjoyment.

Regardless if you aren't a big fan or not, you really should see New Pornographers live if they ever tour near you. They're great. Bejar's NP songs are awesome live as well. The crowd usually goes nuts over a combo of his voice, looks, and actions (he usually sits his guitar down and holds / drinks a beer while singing).

Bejar is so much fun to watch live. He doesn't do anything really, he just stands there holding a beer and not giving a fuck.

Almost the only thing I remember from them live is how awesome they were and the beer.

Listening to The Laziest River on our first rainy day in months. Really helping my mood, as I'm soaked and gonna be very late for work.

Kaputt is a great wet weather album.

If you think I'm a bit over-the-top in my praise for Destroyer, check this out: Destroyer Albums From Worst To Best - Stereogum

Incidentally of the ones I've heard I'd rank them

Kaputt
Rubies
Trouble in Dreams
Thief
Streethawk
Your Blues

I tried to do a top 10 songs, but it is impossible. There's about 10-15 songs that I just can't split.

I'd rate my top 3 exactly like you. I've always liked Trouble in Dreams quite a bit, I know many seemed disappointed in it when it came out.

Fun. I'll do my ranking them before I read the link. In a minute, off the top of my head, top to bottom...

Rubies
Trouble in Dreams
Kaputt
Streethawk
This Night
Thief
Notorious Lightning...
Your Blues
City of Daughters

So, that article is pretty effusive in its praise of Mr. Bejar. If the writer came close to pointing out any flaws, I missed 'em. Anyway, this portion piqued my attention:

"Further complicating the issue is Bejar’s own preoccupation with the literal mention of popular music in his lyrics — he is constantly prone to digressions about and quotations from other songwriters. Listening to his records can occasionally feel like paging through a particularly bright and highly peculiar ’80s ‘zine."

I'll admit, I don't pore over the lyrics. But I'd be interested in how many quotes or references we could assemble. I'll start with an obvious one of a couple I know of:

"Have I told you lately that I love you" - A Dangerous Woman Up To A Point

Which is an awesome song even without the Lionel reference. Your go, Cobbler. Or whoever.

No I don't think a single flaw was picked out. I enjoyed reading because I've fallen in love with Bejar/the band, so it's nice to read someone else who loves them like I do (there's a massive post on Rubies in my blog, link in my sig, if anyone's interested).

I wouldn't say I study his lyrics but I do pore over them a bit, I just find them so interesting, nonsensical and pretty damn funny at times. I had actually never heard of the Bay of Pigs thing until that song came out.

In terms of some references, a few of my favourites off the top of my head...

"Those who love Zeppelin will soon betray Floyd / I cast off those couplets in honour of the void" (comes right after the line you quoted) Dangerous Woman Up to a Point

"Your first love's New Order / Mother Nature's Son" - Blue Eyes

"I'll go into the heart of the sun / we have set the controls for one" - To the Heart of the Sun...

And then you've got the songs that don't explicitly reference other artists, but sounds like them. Shooting Rockets is positively Floydian, Looters' Follies is the greatest Bowie song the man himself didn't write, The Bad Arts reminds of Memory of a Free Festival.

That's a great article. I agree with most things said.

I mostly miss all the references though.

That's not Lionel Richie, that's Rod Stewart. Sounds different in my head.
