There has been a great deal of debate over how this DI should have been carried out, but at the 11th hour we agreed on a solution and are now ready to get rolling. There will be 5 groups of 4 participants each, with Bonnie earning the honorary 20th spot. When/if I get her list, she will be included below.

Links will be supplied soon, so be patient. From now until the end of the tournament, all questions should be made here and not in the signup thread. A listening thread will be made for Group 1 later tonight into tomorrow morning.

BOWL OF D.I.X.

This is only my second DI, so I can only compare this to my debut entry, where I focused specifically on the 90s and mostly the late part of the decade. The first disc was more rock and the second was more dance/beat oriented.

For my sophomore effort, I didn't go in with any grand plan, mostly I just had a bunch of songs I wanted to share. What it does have in common with the previous collection is that I attempted to use as many b-sides/outtakes/deep cuts as possible. Hopefully the majority of this will sound fresh to everyone.

GetGoingCover_zps122ad3c3.jpg

On a general level, Part 1 (Get Going, Step Out) is a looser affair, more "organic" and outdoorsy, and eventually swung more retro than I realized. It's also fairly mellow, after the party dies down it's pretty smooth going forward. But I've listened to it quite a bit and enjoy it.

RiffDogsCover_zps87ad84a1.jpg

Part 2 (Riff Dogs) is definitely rockier and more aggressive, but it also takes a mellow/lighter detour halfway through. I guess I enjoyed finding ways to transition through these songs after I had separated them into two groups, and while it may seem insane on paper, I think I managed to segue pretty naturally from song to song.

Some notes for the curious: Bash & Pop (one of the most obscure artists I used) is fronted by Tommy Stinson, his first band after the break-up of The Replacements. Sarah Shannon is the former singer of brief 90s indie stars Velocity Girl (they even had a Volkswagen commercial!). Thee Midniters are a Mexican-American band from East Los Angeles and an under-heard treasure from the 60s.

NOTE: Please import the .m3u or .xml files into iTunes (or whatever you're using) as it will preserve the playlist settings I gave a lot of attention to w/r/t reducing dead space between tracks and leveling some volume issues.

This playlist explores what happens when an individual is pushed to extremes. I wanted to create a tense atmosphere for my list, but with different moods and genres as well. It is all about walking on the edge of sanity, with some barely retaining control and other slipping off. These are songs for the moments when your emotions escape you, when you shake or snap, when the pressure reaches a boiling point.

"Tinseltown in the Rain"

Inspired by icy winters and warming alcohol, this playlist hits on that awesome, classically-80s contrast between frigidity and romance. No Depression

Since the last DI I’ve been thinking of putting together an Alt-Country/Americana playlist. I’m using these terms pretty loosely, and the list includes some of the founders of alt-country but also indie bands/artists that explored that sound at some point in their careers. There’s no explicit thematic concept behind the playlist other than the common sound and influences, but most songs gravitate towards some of the main themes in the genre: melancholy, heartbreak, departure/travel. The (obvious) image that comes to mind when listening to it is a road trip through the south, and some areas are actually name checked in the songs. Hope you’ll enjoy even you're not normally drawn to this genre.

1. Bright Eyes - “Another Travelin’ Song” - I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning (4:17)
2. Lucinda Williams - “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road” - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road (4:45)
3. Wilco - “Passenger Side” - A.M. (3:34)
4. Whiskeytown - “Excuse Me While I Break My Own Heart Tonight” - Strangers Almanac (3:15)
5. Son Volt - “Windfall” - Trace (2:58)
6. Neko Case - “Maybe Sparrow” - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood (2:38)
7. Billy Bragg & Wilco - “Hesitating Beauty” - Mermaid Avenue Vol. I (3:06)
8. Calexico - “Slowness” - Carried To Dust (3:35)
9. Golden Smog - “Radio King” - Down By The Old Mainstream (3:09)
10. My Morning Jacket - “Golden” - It Still Moves (4:39)
11. Ryan Adams - “Come Pick Me Up” - Heartbreaker (5:18)
12. Okkervil River - “Kansas City” - Don’t Fall In Love With Everyone You See (5:46)

Dream Sequence #1 (AKA The Party & The After Party)
face_explosion_forms_surrealism_57020_1920x1080.jpg

I don't think I need to give a big explanation here. I started off with the second half of the playlist as I wanted to make some sort of weird dream. So that half has dub music, ambient techno, IDM... Making a 90-minute playlist like that would probably bore a lot of people here and maybe even myself so I added the first part, which consists mainly of hiphop but also some other dancy things. So now the loose concept of this album is a guy partying and then falling asleep. And a more accurate concept is that this is a bunch of songs I love. I hope you enjoy it.

1. Arsenal - "Lotuk" - Lotuk (05:05)
2. Magnus - "French Movies" - The Body Gave You Everything (03:57)

7. Run The Jewels (feat. Big Boi) - "Banana Clipper" - Run The Jewels (02:52)
8. Kanye West - "Can't Tell Me Nothing" - Graduation (04:32)
9. Outkast - "ATLiens" - ATLiens (03:50)
10. Massive Attack - "Risingson" - Mezzanine (04:59)
11. Laurel Halo - "Still/Dromos" - Chance of Rain (03:51)
12. Autechre - "Piezo" - Amber (07:59)
13. Nautilis - "Epatre" - Sketches (04:51)

With my DI lists, I like to focus on the genres of music I'm currently interested in. Since I've been listening to so much music from the the 90s lately, that's made it a prominent factor in my recent playlist. Unfortunately, this time around, I had a lot of different ideas, a lot of struggles to get those ideas to make sense. At the end, I went with two major musical sections, that includes a nice little break of a bridge in the middle to connect them. While most of the music on this list isn't from the 90s that inspired me, its influences and influence are felt throughout the two pieces of the whole.

Hopefully you have as much fun listening to it as I had headaches in making it work.

2. Blue Sky Black Death – “Sleeping Children Are Still Flying” – Noir (5:59)

Fairer

Change%20listing%20to%20this%20picture%20ASAP.jpg

This time around, my theme was simple: It's 100% songs sung by women. That's it. No other limitations. It's by no means supposed to be definitive, it's just two hours and thirty-eight minutes of songs that I either like or love, covering an assortment of genres, from various time periods and decades, sung by women. I've named it "Fairer", as in the "fairer sex".

I spent way too much time putting this together, but I'm pretty proud of the flow, the transitions, and the diversity. I hope you enjoy it.

An ode to the music styles of synthpop from yesterday and today, with a focus on both "synth" and "pop".

Kraftwerk may not necessarily be pop, but there's no doubting their impact on the formation of the genre; therefore, they were the only logical choice to lead this off.

From there, the progression to Tubeway Army is fairly obvious, as we get our first movement into the pop arena.

After that, anything goes...

Can you dance to my beat?

1660851_10152029704113472_1056701116_n.jpg

As we dance to a beat that seems out of time
To the one you feel in the metronome of your mind
Does it offend you that our rhythm is strange
Or causes your thinking to be re-arranged
Could it be that you would understand this beat to which we dance
More cleary had you been given the chance
So as you struggle to catch the rhythm with your feet
Ask yourself...
...can you dance to my beat?

Rainbow Serpent Festival 2013 was one of the most crucial weekends of my life. Encouraged by this girl I had fallen in love with, I jumped into a car with a bunch of couchsurfers and drove to the festival, knowing only one person and having never been to a four-day bush doof. I met several great people who I am still very good friends with. I had a ridiculous amount of fun for most of the time, dancing in a donkey onesie and socks to a huge range of electronic music. Drinking. Taking drugs. Talking shit. I discovered that I probably wouldn’t ever get with this girl. She got with another of our crew. I walked off to explore, commiserate, drink and dance by myself. I finally lost my virginity. I also took acid, and had a negative experience with it, becoming extremely anxious, leading to several very scary hours where I thought I’d be trapped forever.

I heard Audiojack’s “Chemical Rewind” version of Homework’s “Ask Yourself” that weekend. It, like so many other things that happened at Rainbow, was a turning point in my life. Some things were great - I now no longer walked around day-in, day-out, with a label reading “virgin” hanging over my head. I discovered more and more electronic dance music that spoke to me in ways dance music had not really spoken to me before. I found that “having fun” was now truly a massive part of my life. I learnt that the mind is incredibly powerful, and that there is nothing scarier than losing control of it.

For months after Rainbow I was, ostensibly, fine. But later in the year, after a bummer of a night, I had some negative thoughts race around my mind. This would have been okay, if they had disappeared like they always had in the past. But something about it took me back to the moments of great anxiety when on acid, and I got stuck for a few days. I told my parents, started seeing a doctor, got medicated and started to get control back. I am still medicated and I still see a doctor. I haven’t been diagnosed with anything but generalised anxiety disorder seems most likely. As it turns out I’ve been living with it my entire life, I just never recognised it in the past. If I told you some of the ridiculous shit that has swum around my mind over the past two years…

This is a playlist that tells you a bit about how I live life. From the high points, having fun, partying, dancing to great music with friends, sometimes you’re in a cool, dank nightclub drinking and taking drugs and talking about how fucked you are, sometimes you’re on you’re own, just digging great music sober at work in the middle of the day, just enjoying life as it is.

Leaving the club, or the bar, or your friend’s house, or walking home from the pub, or the shops, the music slows down as you get reflective, and start thinking about shit. And then, just when you’ve made a life-changing to decision to be neither vacant nor waiting anymore, anxiety hits, like a cloud appearing over your shoulder. Now you’re in trouble, and you can’t get these thoughts out of you. There is something wrong with me. Take your pills, go to sleep.

You can’t say for certain that everything is going to be okay, but there are things you can do to make it seem alright. There are times, plenty of them, where you feel fine. There are crap times, too, but they don’t last forever. For the time being, you just gotta step with care and great tact, remembering life’s a great balancing act.

This playlist is an expansion and refinement of a theme I used in a mini-DI a few years ago. My familiarity with the Blues, that most American of genres, has grown exponentially in that time. I've come to realise that my usual playlists meander quite a bit and well at nearly 2 hours of music they can be a bit tricky to listen to, especially since I eschew more well known artists. This probably makes my lists a bit harder to digest especially if you have limited listening time, it definitely doesn't make it easy to give it repeat listens. For the 10th Desert Island i've just went for a single hour of music that I feel blasts through at a fair clip. There is little in the way of electronica this time which my previous lists have tended to feature quite a bit of. I think at the beginning I set out with the aim of, if IWasBored liked something from my list I would consider it a success! Anyway I would just like to say that i've enjoyed doing these competitions over the years we have been doing them, and it is thanks to them that i've been introduced to some really good music and they continue to do so.

The Sad Punk

WE CAN ONLY REMEMBER
2lw7nly.jpg

The original idea was that this was a conceptual list about two lost loves trying to reconnect after years of being apart, whether in tiny country town or post-industrial urban mass, through sticky dance floors, mysterious tragedy and exile on the lonely highway fueled by am radio, all in the realm of flashing memories interpreted through contemporary artists and their influences, but in the end I am basically just gonna say that Snap is an underrated font.

Really excited to hear these, folks. Looking good.

LM, forgot to give you a total running time, but my two parts are 72:51 and 68:47, respectively. DO THE MATH.

I need to make an ammendment to my paragraph, as I was writing it in a text to Travis and left out a very important sentence:

I've been listening to a lot of 90s music, and while most of the music on this list isn't from that decade, it's influences and influence are felt throughout the two pieces of the whole .

Oh man, Travis, that's one hell of a list. Tracks 20-28 is a sequence after my own heart.

Joey788's list looks like a real standout too.

I can't have more than 12 images per post, so I edited post #4 to include the rest of the lists. We're ready to go.

Corrected.

I figured you would like it.

Fucking excited, these all look great. Loving the amount of Outkast and Destroyer. Joey, yours in particular stands out at first. Peef, I can see You Were a Kindness seguing perfectly into The Troubles. And hell yeah for x2 Something for Kate.

Sorry for my tl;dr, folks, but I had to get it down with the playlist.

I have been criticized in the last few DI's for not having a theme for my list, and I'd just like to clear up a point here (as if using a photo of myself wasn't indicative of this already): the concept of my list is essentially an autobiographical look at the last six months or so of my life. I had written a number of long-winded explanations, but none of them felt right, which is why it's left underexplained here, but there is a theme at play here.

I'm ready for listening, let's get to it.

My apologies once again for how long it took to get this started. I know you've all been itching to start listening, but I think it will all work out for the best.

Once we've determined how long we're going to need for each group, I'll make up a schedule.

Links for all groups have been sent out.

Group 1's listening thread will be up early morning EST so you can have the playlists for work tomorrow, if that's something you're into. For now, I have to make my commute home.

I'm fucking feeling the energy. I think this is gonna be a good competition.

Also namckur great idea with your list. When I was making my list I was a bit disappointed at the lack of women on it. I'd think about doing something similar for future DIs but I'm a misogynist who has a problem with female artists expressing themselves and don't have that much female-led music on my itunes :reject:

Hey Travis, can you swing me the links too? I'll try to listen to at least some.

Cheers.

Not sure if I'll be able to listen to them all, so I may not submit rankings for the group stage, but I'm aiming to listen to everything that qualifies for the finals and vote.

Cobbler, you need to upload a full .zip file. Mediafire not only flags tracks that may be purchased elsewhere, but it also doesn't allow you to download more than one song at once.

Cool beans.

Why isn't my cover art showing up? Also, shout out to the two Disney folks and two selfies.

Excited that we can finally get started. Lots of great stuff in there at first glance.

It seems like I'm the only one who went stream only. I hope that doesn't put too many people off of listening to it.
