Here we go, folks. DI 8.0.

Hopefully by starting this now, it gives people time over the holidays to construct a playlist, and then listen to other entries beginning with the new year, before things get too crazy for people again...

The premise is simple - create the best musical experience you can if you were stuck on a desert island, and it was the only thing you'd be able to listen to. Remember that picking a playlist is more than just having great songs; cohesion is essential, and for our veteran players, variety from past entries is key.

THE RULES
1. Your playlist can be up to 160 minutes in length. You may employ any medium you desire - two CDs of no more than 80 minutes each, unbroken iPod playlists, or any other combination of songs.
2. You may only use ONE song by any particular artist. In this rule, we are concerned with one continuous song; if the song is split into separate tracks or movements, all tracks or movements may be included. For example, if you wanted to have both parts of the song "Love Like A Sunset" by Phoenix, this would be acceptable even though they are split over two tracks, as it is basically one song. I will also accept intros to songs that are separated. However, if you wish to do this, please clear it with me first. For the sake of this tournament, Passengers will be considered to be a separate artist to U2.
3. Every selection must appear on an OFFICIAL RELEASE by that artist. It may be any form of release: album, single, official live release, rarities box set, iTunes only release, or even a free track from the artist's official site or MySpace page. Unreleased tracks (like U2's studio version of Mercy) and live bootlegs are not allowed ("official bootlegs" by bands such as Pearl Jam are permitted).
4. Tracks may not be edited/shortened in any way. However, you may edit a track to remove a separate hidden track at the end. Naturally, this rule does not apply to official edits covered by rule #3, such as radio edits.
5. Songs from compilations are allowed. However, if you wish to use more than one song from the same compilation, please contact me first. A playlist should not rely too strongly on material originating from a single source.
6. If you have competed in prior editions of the game, you MUST NOT REPEAT ANY SONGS from your previous entries. Songs used in the mini-tournaments may be repeated at will, though.

SUBMISSION DETAILS
All entries need to be sent via PM to me directly by December 31st. Please include the following:

1. Your playlist.
2. Links to uploads of your playlist so that others may hear the music they do not know. This is mandatory, so if you cannot do uploads, do not bother entering. Also, please upload your playlist in either ZIP or RAR folders rather than each song individually.
3. OPTIONAL: A paragraph with any additional details on your playlist (why you made the choices you made, any important facts you wish to note, why you think people should vote for your playlist, etc.).
4. OPTIONAL: A cover for your playlist, and any other additional materials you believe are essential to the full package. Please provide a stable link to the cover image on a picture hosting website.

Additionally, please have your playlist constructed in the following manner:

Forum name: [Your Interference name here]

Tracklist:

TRACKLIST TITLE (if you give it one)

Track #. Band Name - "Song Title" - Album Name (Time in Minutes:Seconds)
1. Please - "Follow This Format" - Thank You (20:15)
2. It Helps A Lot - "If You Follow This" - To The Letter (10:45)
3. Life Is Easier - "When People Do" - What Is Asked In The Rules (15:00)
4. Rules - "Are Not Hard" - To Follow (15:30)
5. Grammar, Punctuation, And Order - "Should Be Just Like They Are" - In This Example (7:15)
6. Thank You Very Much - "In Advance" - For Adhering To This Style! (43:20)

Total runtime: 112:05

FORMAT
As playlists are received, I will create four Master List threads containing five entries each (20 submissions overall). If I receive the first five submissions prior to the December 31st deadline, the first Master List thread will appear early. The idea is to give everyone adequate time for listening to each playlist without getting them all at once. I plan on releasing a new Master List thread approximately 10 days after the previous one.

By a specific date, everyone will need to provide me with a ranking of all the playlists (this date will show up in the last Master List thread). You'll rank 19 playlists total - you will not include your own. Points will be added up using the following formula:

1. 19 points
2. 18 points
3. 17 points

And so on.

I will calculate the totals and post them in the Results thread (date TBA), along with each player's individual ranking.

In lieu of a running diary thread, players can leave comments within each Master List thread if they so desire. It is also encouraged to include a commentary of your thoughts when submitting your playlist ranking.

CONTESTANTS
This tournament will have 20 contestants admitted on a first come, first served basis. Since we always have people sign up and then drop off, two alternates will also be listed.

To register your intention to compete, add your name to the following list:

Thanks everyone.

I'm in.

Also, I had a question. For the write-ups, do people think it's better to tell more or less? Like, should the narrative just be generally told or should it be done song by song? Thanks.

I'm in.

But isn't this kind of soon? We didn't have a mini-DI between DI's this time like we have the past few times.

It's actually been almost a year. DI7 started back in March, if I remember correctly.

You're right, we skipped a mini this time, but by doing DI8 now, I'm sure we'll get one in at some point in 2011.

It's up to you how much you want to say. I think in general people appreciate feedback on their playlists. Some like to go song by song, others like to summarize. Whatever works for you...

While I think now is the right time for DI VIII, I'll be looking forward to another Mini DI; sometimes I find myself favouring the shorter form.

Perhaps, once we've done this tournament and had a couple of months to consolidate listening, a Best Of 2010 Mini DI would be fun?

I was worried that in the 3 hours I decided to not live on Interference I had missed signup. The fact that I thought of DI as such a momentous event is probably a sign that I should have stayed away longer.

I'm in.

I support the Best of 2010 mini DI too. I make playlists of that kind every year, so it would be a good excuse to put effort into it for once.

Sure, I guess. In the event that some fellow wants in more than me, though, don't hesitate to kick me out.

I would like to listen to the playlists regardless of what happens, though.

umm maybe i will try this? if there is room? sounds fun and i'll likely be bored during break. i like music and islands; undecided about deserts. sometimes i compulsively make playlists based on some idea i get. so theres that.

Welcome aboard - still have plenty of room.

can i just say that the reason i enjoyed this so much the last time was due to the discussion. in the first master thread there was like 300 posts, i think, but that had dropped right off to four or five pages by the fourth master thread.

it really isn't hard to pass your opinion on each of the playlists you listen to, as i did for each and every one. something a bit more than "it was good" or "i liked it", preferably. most people who enter a playlist in this comp you can bet have spent a fair bit of time on it, so it would be great if could pass your opinion as you have listened to it.

:)

Yeah, sadly, I didn't do that as much last time because I was crazy busy.

But I will definitely do so this time around.

Not playing, Phanan?

It had been my original plan to skip this one and just be a listener.

However, I'm thinking of submitting one now, because I thought of something that I really want to do. I can guarantee you it won't finish anywhere near where some of my other entries have though. But that's the beauty of it...
