Desert Island VIII Master List, Part One

Let the listening commence...

As previously mentioned, each Master List thread will appear approximately 10 days apart to allow adequate time for hearing all playlists. Hopefully this will greatly enhance the experience for everyone involved.

I will be sending out PMs with links for these five playlists to all players, as well as any additional listeners who express interest in participating. As of right now, I've got gump, GAF, and SP on that list.

Here are our first five entries, in the order they were received:

collapse

So my playlist can definitely be listened to straight through if you are so inclined. However, I decided to divide it up to make it more manageable, and so instead of one overarching idea or mood, each section has a vague concept behind it. Hopefully everyone will find something they enjoy on my list!

Judge this book by its cover: this is a party, eclectic in sound, but homogeneous in spirit. The playlist is divided into soul/R&B, electronic, and rap/hip-hop thirds, with each receiving a roughly equal amount of tracks, so the disco ball is just me being lazy. I’ve been putting this list together for over two years, but I delayed releasing it because I wanted it to be as deep as possible, offering the very best of what each genre has to offer (with, of course, only the best sequences I could manage gluing them together). Don’t let my perfectionist tendencies betray the fun I had making this list, however; I really think this is one of the most enjoyable, unique playlists that I’ve come across. Let’s just pretend this isn’t Oneblood’s last list made more acceptable to B&C tastes.

Track listing:

My playlist is organized around the themes of day and night. However, it also represents the seasonal change from fall to winter during a transitional period in my life. Screwtape2

Does The Metropolis Dream of Innocence?

We are children of a lesser groom, the mistakes of a strobe light room,
Where strangers flock and lose themselves in Technicolor attire.
We are creatures of the night, running for our lives in a spinning city,
Seeking sanctuary in backstreets but stumbling forth from beneath the globe.
Fearless fashion, even artists by some description,
Yet it is all a zombie occupation where the anthill moans.
On the corners, vicious vicars advertising the latest faith,
They lead you from the charcoal darkness into a silver, sterile haven.
In this holy site, and holy if simply clean, they explain this dangerous game,
“It is a lithium and synthetic religion of exterior revision
--through simian precision!”

We are the howl, the cavernous growl, the sacred scream
The invisible men in a ghost world, hiding even from itself.
Like a symphony the mood inside us changes to a gloomy awareness,
Paralysis when the passing feeling still persists.
Homegrown and vengeful, harlequins and harmless heroes in pain,
The Metropolis is faded, the Ginza guardians have abandoned their posts,
The silver towers and poles of white bleed in the black and acid rain.
Like an unfinished symphony the nighttime roar at times falls silent,
Breathless smokestacks pump the city’s lifeblood no longer.
A longing shadow creeps, it tries to the follow the caravan,
The caravan of puppets, sheep and freaks seeks the edge of the world.
Gargoyles and gas plant pillars, garbage pylons and broken glass giants.
Like ghosts caste out of the next world into a kingdom of ash and cinder,
Fashioned to please the nearly blind or at least conditioned to depress.

In a capital of a ghost world, seek no dreams
Yet in the center circle there spins a massive globe: The Jupiter Ghost.
In a starless sky, wish only upon the ghost.
Mourn for the future by gathering beneath a behemoth,
A memory of a universe no longer seen.
Through the static and electric storm,
Heaven held but Earth bound,
Bright light and a carnival in eternal night.
On the windowsill a population of dreams tries to reach the atmosphere.
If only to dream up a new world
If only to dream louder than the motor crawl, the insufferable growl.
The heavy clouds may bring a dangerous rain,
To the electric dreams of a Metropolis.
The city desired rainbows so they created Technicolor lights
The city sought a guiding star so they tied down their perfect planet.

It all begs one question, a gentle sounding question,
One with a touch of class and lyrical flair,
With a bellowing and brightly lit behemoth
With sheets over its head even in dreamtime,
Does the Metropolis dream of innocence?

these look awesome. i see songs i like on all the lists so far, and a lot i haven't heard yet. LemonMelon's looks like a party, and i like to party. iron yuppie's starts with one of my favourite songs ever, and it looks like Reggo might appreciate some of the metalz on my list. Screwtape's looks interesting; a number of bands i haven't even heard of. looking forward to listening!

Who knew Screwtape was a poet?

Ha, yeah, I guarantee yours is significantly more palatable to our listeners.

I haven't listened to it yet, but off the bat, I'd balk at the hip-hop tracks being called "deep" cuts (in fact, I'd argue most of them are pretty easy choices, especially when I know you have a much more extensive knowledge of hip-hop than you're letting on here). Then again, this is a similar complaint you had with my last list, so who am I to say?

Either way, yours will be the first list I start up tomorrow, once I'm back at my computer, and I'm excited for it.

Thanks. It comes from a series of "cyberpunk" poems I wrote which are referenced in the obscured lines on the cover. I hope you like the rest of the playlist as well.

My first listen will be on Monday, and I'll probably just go in order and start with collapse's playlist. Should be a good listen - there are a few artists there that are on mine as well.

LemonMelon, I very nearly included the Hercules and LCD Soundsystem songs that you have on yours. I'm glad that your playlist is a party, because, as I think about it, mine gets really heavy toward the end.

These look pretty interesting. Understandably I'm keen to give collapse's a spin (especially since the metal choices in general seem to come from a bit of a different place to my own metal listening), but I'm curious about the lot. Will hopefully start my listening tomorrow or Tuesday.
