The Desert Island V tournament will be run in a manner similar to the World Cup. There are five groups, with five players in each group. Each player will have a match against every opponent in his/her group. Once these rounds are complete, the two players with the most points in each group moves on to the quarterfinals. If there is a tie in points, whoever wins the tiebreaker moves on (tiebreakers explained in detail further down).

For each match, the objective is to win more votes than your opponent. For every win, each player will receive three points. If there is a tie, each player gets two points. If a player loses a match but is within three votes of the winner, that player will earn a single point.

It's important to remember that every vote counts. Even if someone is way ahead in a match, you should still vote for the playlist you think is better. This is very important becaue the vote differential sometimes comes into play with tiebreakers.

Once all the preliminary rounds are completed, the top two from each group move on. However, if two players have the same amount of points, we use the following tiebreaker system:

-The player with the better overall record wins
-If overall records are the same, the player with the better vote differential wins
-If the vote differential is the same, a one match playoff will be done

The tournament is tentatively scheduled to begin sometime in the next few weeks. Updates will be posted here and on the Desert Island site.

Zootlesque

These Boots Are Made For Knockin’

As the title suggests, this playlist is filled with panty droppers! But it is not all slow bedroom music. Everyone’s definition of the word “sexy” is different. Some associate it with smooth jazzy R&B numbers. Some think of sexy rock riffs and lyrical innuendo. And some others may prefer stylish dance party music. I have tried to accommodate all of that and much more. There are a few unconventional picks that might make you go WTF until you pay attention to the lyrics or get into the groove. Anyway, everyone’s interpretation is different and I hope there’s enough on here to please all of you listening. So dim the lights, burn some incense, grab a drink, sit back and enjoy.

Hey fellas, I’m back again with another list for you guys. This time around, I wanted to try and make a list that’s fun to listen to, diverse, and well constructed. This contest has always been a fun creative exercise for me, and I think this is the most fun I’ve had creating a list and its peripherals. Originally, this was a 2 CD set split with 18 songs each, but the length went over on the 1st disc, so that was shot. Instead, I broke it up into 4 sections and used that as an opportunity to make some covers for each:

The first section is more dance/electronica-oriented, with a shot from Predator serving as the cover, which actually served as the music video for Ratatat’s “Mirando.”

The second section is a darker progression, with the shot of Jaws serving as visual irony for this section’s title. “Please” is meant to end the first half, not really meaning to go into the Weezer track well at all.

The third section digs more into that ‘90s alt rock sound then ending with Adam Sandler’s magnum opus, “The Goat Song;” the cover here comes from Fight Club.

The final section takes a more lighter approach and is my favorite part of the entire list; the cover is a shot from Raging Bull, referencing the closing line in Jake La Motta’s opening monologue.
So yeah, that’s about it. I hope you all enjoy listening to the list and give me some feedback on what you liked, didn’t like, etc… I’m incredibly psyched to hear everyone else’s lists and get crackin’.

Perilous Desire

This is my first time participating in DI and my playlist may not be a conventional one. Rather than focus on segues and flow and dynamic, interesting songs, I chose to tell a story with my playlist. It is, of course, a love story. It started one night when I was listening to the first track of this list, and I went "I want to start my DI list with this song, and make it a love story.", so I did. It starts with the very beginnings of a relationship, and everything is happy at first... but soon it begins to disintegrate, and we move on into break up songs, and then the aftermath. The first and last songs could sort of be considered the prologue and epilogue, with everything inbetween serving as the story, although exact details about things like what caused the breakup and who was at fault, are left up to the imagination and interpretation of the listeners. The list contains a lot of mainstream, 'pop' songs, simply because I have admittedly strange, often bad taste in music, and because that's a lot of what I usually have on hand, but I think the songs themselves tell the story well. Flow and segue was really not my main concern, and yes, there are a couple of jarring segues. The song that caused the most trouble in that department was the first, because it's from an album where all the songs flow seamlessly together, but as it was my inspiration, I was determined to use it, and so I had to overlook that.

Ever since I was hooked by the film High Fidelity, I've wanted to start making and sharing compilation tapes. When I got word that Interference had a contest for this very artform, I was hard within seconds. So I committed to taking part in this contest, and when I began, I was planning on having no plan - that is, chucking some of my favourite songs together and trying to make them flow. However, for some reason I couldn't get that to work, so I soon threw that out the window, and started on a sort-of concept album. It's about love, girls, that whole chestnut. I tried to reflect it in the album art, which I whipped together quickly in Paint one night when I was bored, and I quite like, really. I didn't realise it at the time but it's inspired by/a ripoff of Is This It by The Strokes, one of my favourite albums (whose songs of which I couldn't find any room for here, unfortunately).

It follows a loose story - guy wants girl, guy gets girl, guy likes girl, guy has problems with girl, guy and girl are over. Most of us have been there to a degree. It's nothing particularly innovative - in fact, probably a bit overplayed - but I'm 18, and at the moment it's who I am and what I'm feeling, and to be honest it wouldn't be right for me to put out some pretentious bullshit for the sake of impressing you guys. In terms of music, this is a real mixed bag, to an extent. While there's no insane genre-crossing, there's songs from different eras, countries and genres. I tried to make the selection a mixture of my favourite songs, the best songs from a few of the artists, and a few songs that I don't think too many of you would have heard. Sadly there's a lot of songs or artists I couldn't fit in here - not because of time restraints but because they just didn't fit. Oh well, there's always next time - for which I'm already planning...

The end result is something that I'm really happy with. I was planning to to be short (between 40-50 minutes, like most albums, sorta), but towards the end I remembered a few old favourites and found a way to throw them in, so it just clocks in at around an hour and ten minutes. Even though I'm very fond of this playlist - it's something I've lived with and toyed with and listened to for around a month now - I'm all ears in terms of feedback, not only for song choice (even though I think all the songs here are rad), but for the order and the cohesiveness and all that. Given it's my first such playlist, I think it's only fair. In fact, that's one of the things that makes these contests so attractive to me. If I can pick up a handful of new songs, a few new favourite artists, and find new ways of listening to old favourites, then it doesn't matter if I don't make it out of the group stages, or win the whole bloody thing.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. I give you... All You Ever Wanted.

This is unapologetically my worst Desert Island installment yet. I don't really care and just kind of threw it together. There are some good ideas, but it's really nothing special. You won't break my heart by not voting for it.

The Sad Punk

It's, like, there's like this concept where this guy falls in love, and is just completely rapt with this girl. And then he begins to realise that she's sleeping around, which just canes this guy. That's the first half. The second half, he delves into a world of womanising and gettingfuckedup that he didn't know existed beforehand. I actually had something written for this, but this will suffice, I think.

The two main genres are soul and shoegaze, but there's other stuff too. I have never really done something like this before, so I hope you can get something out of it.

I love interpretation, so I won't go with a track by track thing. Also, I'm desperately running out of time. But by the end of the second disc, I just imagine that the protagonist is nearly dead, ruined by an excess and longing of the woman he was with from tracks 2-8. The last instrumental part of "Time", the very final track, really could mean a lot of things. I don't know if it means he goes out again and does all that crazy shit, or if he's gone insane, or if he's killed himself, or killed someone else. Anyway, I figure it's not pretty.

I hope you enjoy this muchly.

The purpose of splitting these two sets up is to emphasize just how drastically different they are from one another, and that they provide two entirely different experiences. It is preferable to listen to them in a row (if you do, I suggest you listen to Super Massive Black Cherub Metal, and then ease your way in to #9 Dream) but listening to them separately doesn't do much to hurt the overall experience. Ultimately, I hope everyone finds something to love here, and that those who find one set less enjoyable than the other could at least discover some new music out of it.

Supermassive Black Cherub Metal

Not much to say about this playlist. It's just a set of good ol' fashioned rock n' roll that's consistently louder than anything I've entered previously; even the breaks in the loudness tend to be lo-fi and themselves filled with noise. But this is good, as there aren't any ballads awkwardly thrown in for the sake of variety. Sit back and crank this one up as loud as you can.

Track listing:

1. Smashing Pumpkins - "Cherub Rock" - Siamese Dream (4:57)
2. Pixies - "Broken Face" - Surfer Rosa (1:30)

#9 Dream

This set is a concept album but, in contrast to Cherub Metal, which had a musical concept (rocking out as hard as possible), #9 Dream contains many running lyrical threads, along with a generally airy musical feel. Originally, this playlist was meant to be a soundtrack for a movie I wanted to make about a man who becomes extremely ill and decides to sleep his way through it rather than take himself to a hospital. The movie was going to be extremely surreal and would explore what a waking (2 hour long) dream would look like. Because of this, the playlist for it is equally surreal and feverish. It is very dark, filled with lyrics concerning illness, death, and insanity, but ultimately asks many thought-provoking questions about love and life. And, in spite of the darkness, there are many moments of childlike wonderment to be heard here. The twist ending is that, in accordance with a line in the final song here, Moby's "Porcelain" ("In my dreams I'm dying all the time"), the protagonist may or may not have survived the night. Regardless of whether or not they did, we can assume that they learned much about themselves during this hour or two. While listening, try to focus on the musical flow of the playlist in addition to the plotline, which actually strengthens its. As in any dream, there are moments where things go off the rails ("300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues", "Defecting Grey") and this playlist takes advantage of the vignette quality that so many dreams take on. So, in conclusion, what can you expect from this playlist? Airy soundscapes, quiet darkness, lovely noise, and much contemplation. Dig it.

1. Modest Mouse - "3rd Planet" - The Moon And Antarctica (3:58)
2. The Verve - "Already There" - A Storm In Heaven (5:38)

AtomicBono's Desert Island V: Surviving Another Summer

I had no theme in mind when creating this playlist. It's simply a list of songs I love that I think flows well. I did end up dividing it into sections in a vaguely thematic way, but I want this to be viewed as one big playlist - I just think it's easier to split it up in case people don't have enough time to listen to it as a whole. I don't expect people to love every song on this list, but hopefully the sheer diversity of music will be appreciated. There should be something for everyone.

Messages From Earth

Like words on the wind, the silence is broken by what has been carried away and suddenly found. A message in a bottle from an island called Earth. They are the scream, the rapist and the violator. The tortured caught between two worlds. This is a poem without rhyme scattered. A story in pieces told in masks now lost like tears in the rain. It has no meaning. It has no message. It serves no purpose except that in the chance moment that those far from this island called Earth may feel the same thing from the same note and the same sound even if they never understand it. Words like dreams live on in a sound, in a note. These messages from Earth surrender themselves to you.

Hardy Har Har's Desert Island 5 Playlist

With about a day to get this thing together, the only theme I could come up with was to be loosely semi-autobiographical through songs I've known and loved. A few that take me to specific places. Brought back a couple from my retro set. Lifted The Pretender's from Vintage Punk's. I think this list would be a great set to take a long drive to. It may have changed a bit if I had more time but I like it just the same. Hope you enjoy some of it.

Part One - Awakening (Whatever you say, Kath)
Still under the influence of my big sister, I'm dependent on her collection and I spend many hours daydreaming to her more folk leaning LPs. However, her parties during the 60's at our house and friends who attended open my eyes to a world I wanted to be a part of, but would have to wait 'til 1971 & high school for. I'm able to observe the summer of love
from a distance.

1. The Everly Brothers - "All I Have To Do Is Dream" - The Everly Brothers' Best (2:22)
2. Music Explosion - "Little Bit O' Soul" - Little Bit O' Soul (2:21)
3. The Beach Boys - "Don't Worry Baby" - The Absolute Best Vol. 1 (2:48)
4. The Beatles - "You Can't Do That" - A Hard Day's Night (2:38)
5. The Doors - "Hello, I Love You" - Greatest Hits (2:15)
6. Cream - "Strange Brew" - Disraeli Gears (2:49)
7. The Who - "Substitute" - Live At Leeds (2:07)
8. Pink Floyd - "See Emily Play" - Relics (2:53)
9. Elton John - "I Need You To Turn To" - Elton John (2:33)

Part Two - Reckoning (hey man, schoolday's insane, hey man, my work's down the drain)

The day I turned 16, I got my driver's license and that night I began a food delivery job with older guys. This was the catalyst to a downward spiral that lasted a decade or so. King Missile's Cheesecake Truck fit nicely. Mott the Hoople's All the Way From Memphis was the song playing as I walked into my first high school party. Editions of You was a Roxy live staple and is from their 2nd & final album with Eno. The rest, groups and songs I liked during the70's & early 80's.

Already a big Zep fan, Led Zeppelin was not my first concert. However, it was the concert that showed me exactly what I had been searching for. Like U2's Elevation tour, Zep strolled out onto the stage to no hoopla, Bonham burst into the opening beats of Rock 'n Roll, a song I loved, and a fairly naive 17 year old was instantly blown away. This version's first minute or so takes me right back to that moment I remember so well. The excitement of the crowd's roar, Plant's initial wails, the instantaneous maelstrom of teenage anarchy all
around my girlfriend and I. Everything and anything going on. No parents around with their kids in those days. Ha!

One constant through these years was the music. Great shows, bands & songs all the way through those crazy nights. I've ended it with the obvious and wonderful Rock 'n Roll Suicide. By my late 20's, I knew this lifestyle had to end.

10. King Missile "Cheesecake Truck" -Mystical Shit / Fluting on the Hump (1:11)

I don't know what Lila saw in me, but she liked me and basically saved me in everyway that a person can be saved (lifted from Titanic, lol). So I've included here songs & groups we have enjoyed together. And our greatest achievement - Maddy, an angel sent to us from heaven - contributed a couple of songs I like quite a bit, turning me on to Speed of Sound, Storm in a Teacup, and Shut Up and Drive. I'm a lucky guy.

This list was my attempt to REALLY make a list of songs I like. I realize I've said this about each list, but I really feel that it wasn't true for either of the previous competitions, especially DI 4, as I knowingly attempted to make a list others would like, and in turn, did not actually enjoy myself. This time I've stripped most of that away, and created a list that not only I enjoy (a
great deal) but that I also think others can find something to like about as well. There was a conscious effort however to keep the lighter tracks on one disc and the semi-heavier ones on a second, hence the split.

Also I used this list as an attempt to pay homage to some bands I've recently really begun to love, such as The Dresden Dolls and The National.

Finally, the Meat Loaf song is on there for a reason. I wanted to put songs I love on the list, and not try to do something that I'm not, like I did last time. So I picked what I hoped would be the most extreme song by him, but what also happened to be one of my favorite songs by him, as sort of a part of all that. I almost didn't do it, as I realized how much people would hate the song, but at the same time, it felt wrong to myself to leave it off, and so, please bare with its inclusion.

There's nothing else I can think to say so I just hope you can find something to like, and just generally enjoy listening. Oh! One more thing, the cover art for disc two, as well as pretty much all of the song placement were contributed/Constructed by LemonMelon, before he came along, it was one disjointed mess.

Escapism

You've been working here for three and a half years. It's the longest you've ever been in the same job. Three and a half years of fixing other people's mistakes, solving other people's problems, cleaning up other people's fuckups, copping other people's shit. Three and a half years of boring, tedious work that you're not remotely interested in, and never were. Three and a half years of
"this will do until I get a better job", or "just until I get back from my holiday".

You're sick of it. You want out. You've had some meltdowns, but that was before you stopped giving a shit. Now you're sick of the apathy, on top of everything else.

And you know things could be worse, and that you have nothing to complain about. But somehow, that doesn't help.

Sometimes it feels like the only thing keeping you sane is music. For a few minutes at a time, you can escape, one way or another. Some tracks can pull you out of your own head and take you away somewhere (pays to be careful of those while driving). Some echo all the crap you keep bottled up... the futile frustration, the smothered violence, the self-indulgent wangst. Some of them are loud enough to drown out all the other noise in your head; and some just have a killer bassline that you can feel resonating in your bones.

However they do it, they allow you to forget, for a while, where you are.

Looking cool so far. My most anticipated list is in Group 4, it seems.

Hahahaha...Axver and I are in the same division for the first time ever. This will be epic.

Fuck yes.

The chances of me listening to every list in time? Slim. But I will try. I will try my best.

Ok, well I'm not gonna get the site done tonight, but the first group has been fixed with correct links for Zoots and DOL13, and Group 2 has been started with the tourist. I hope to get the rest up tomorrow if possible.
