Desert Island IX: Results Thread

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I've suggested a few alternatives to help assist those problems, such as making sure that only those who are participating in the competition, or those pre approved by the contest runner, to vote in the polls.

Agreed with this part, definitely, after the incident we had back in, I think, DI5 or something.

The reason I love the poll so much, is because it really put more emphasis on actually listen to the lists in a timely fashion, this format has always been too loose.

I never got that sense, to be honest. I think we had quite a few participants voting without listening at all.

Yeah, I remember. People going into the Temple Bar and saying, "Vote for me plz".

Honestly, I suspect as many people listen as who listened to all of these lists. With a shorter format, no matter what, I think we'll have more people listening to the lists.

I'm certainly open to any changes. DI has evolved so much from the first edition that it's to be expected by now, and it actually keeps it fresh. We've done rankings as much as the World Cup style I think, so switching it up isn't a bad thing.

Title: Uptempo/Downtempo

The underlying concept of this list is a simple one: songs that make me want to move. Not all of them would fall under the category of "dance" or even "electronica," but they all boast a groove or beat that I find infectious and energizing in some way or another.

Yeah, Tame Impala must have been the most represented artist on these. Much to IWB's ire.

iYup, I still think your list might have been the most...unexpected...list I've ever heard. I'm not even sure I knew that you liked this kind of music

It's strange how it came together. The Elton John-New Order combo came on my iPod shuffle while I was working out, and I built it from there.

Saturday Night, Sunday Morning

Forgive me for the admittedly cliché topic, but it gave me some freedom with the sounds and moods I wanted to explore. Saturday night starts off as the protagonist escapes yet again to the city, to find entertainment and sex. Despite the glowing lights and glamour, he thinks of Jane Smiley, whom he left yet again at home after a meaningless argument. The bright lights start to get blurry as he realizes the mistakes he's made. Suddenly, the people around him don't look so extraordinary, and the substances he consumed start to take their toll. He wonders if he will make it through this. Sunday morning is full of regret. He asks for forgiveness, but doesn't expect it. He realizes it's too late. As Jane leaves, he feels alone in the house. He pretends he can have her back and return home to southern Carolina. But he drives alone to the house of his estranged father, frozen underground.

Gump's list

Like I said at the time. The only issue I had with his list and it's really just a miniscule thing that a lot of people do, was that it relied so heavily on music released in the last few years. Other than that, gooooood shit.

Loved Padj's list, especially the first half. Cocteau Twins. The Chameleons.

The first half of his list was fantastic. It just kinda dropped off for me in the second half, unfortunately.

At least he included an older Tame Impala track. I loved this list. Ranked it near the top.

Thank you all! I honestly didn't expect to be this high on the ranking, being my first entry and all. Also, the quality of the playlists overall was really great. I'm happy
Now I'm kinda aching to know who put me on first place...
Ah yes, btw, I'm a girl

Zoots Grooves

t8rmnp.jpg

Side two is a tour of rhythm-based/electronic music of the decade, beginning with retro/global pop and proceeding through trip-hop/downtempo, Big Beat, drum 'n' bass, etc. Hip-hop only pokes its head in briefly through crossover, as that genre really necessitates its own compilation.

1. Pizzicato Five - "Baby Portable Rock (baby Mexican Rock version)"
- Combinasion Spaciale (EP) - (4:30)
2. Los Amigos Invisibles - "Sexy" - The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera - (3:25)
3. Saint Etienne - "Lose That Girl" - Good Humor (4:03)
4. David Byrne - "Fuzzy Freaky (Mark Walk And Ruby Mix)" - The VIsible Man (2:46)
5. Happy Mondays - "Bob's Yer Uncle" - Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches (5:11)
6. Cornershop - "Sleep On The Left Side " - When I Was Born For The 7th Time (4:06)
7. Massive Attack - "Protection (Underdog's Angel Dust Mix)" - Special Brew (comp.) (4:52)
8. Robbie Robertson & Howie B. - "Take Your Partner By The Hand (Red Alert mix)"
- Contact From The Underworld Of Redboy (6:43)
9. Tricky - "Bad Dreams" - Pre-Millennium Tension - (4:12)
10. The Prodigy - "Diesel Power" - The Fat Of The Land (4:17)
11. Fatboy Slim - "Gangster Tripping" - You've Come A Long Way, Baby (5:20)
12. Underworld - "Jumbo" - Beaucoup Fish (6:58)
13. Everything But The Girl - "Walking Wounded (Omni Trio Remix)" - Walking Wounded (6:44)

TRT (1:03:01)

Speaking of...I feel like such a hypocrite when I "complain" about lists being mostly comprised of newer songs, but then there are lists like Laz's that are just one decade. I think the difference is, he covered so much and such a long period of time over his list that really just sealed it up for me as an absolute favorite/classic.
