YLB has said it best: Bowie from '71-'80 is pretty much gold.

Hell, we should stretch it back to '69 with Space Oddity. That album's really grown on me recently.

Young Americans is his only '70s album that isn't that great, besides the immortal title track.

I love it when people bump this thread.

I'm kind of a new Bowie fan... but my God, that man is amazing. I own Ziggy Stardust, Low, Heroes, Hunky Dory, and Let's Dance right now, and love all of them... and I'm looking to buy a bunch more (up to ten, but I'm not sure I want to buy that many at once) next weekend... I know I'm going to get Space Oddity, but I'm not sure from there... reading this thread has helped me, though.
ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE ALADDIN SANE

You'll hear everything from the Stones (in both music and a complete cover), to Detroit panic, to cabaret, to how the Earth relearns how to copulate by watching 70s pornos.

The man's a fucking genius.

How about his song titles?

Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed
Up the Hill Backwards
Lady Grinning Soul
Rock 'n' Roll Suicide

I just love it.

my all time 4 favs of bowie must be

I agree Aladdin Sane is just fantastic, Cracked actor is an awesome song.

And panic in dertiot is just so fricken cool

I can never pick me favourite Bowie album. It's just too hard. All I know is it's not Lodger, and it's probably not "Heroes". That's all I know.

Watch That Man is awesome, geez he could write a hook.

So I'm a little embarrassed to say so, but I knew very little about David Bowie before September. I actually knew a handful of songs, but that's about it.

Strange, then, that it took seeing U2 in concert for me to really become intrigued by him. I picked up Space Oddity (the album) and loved it. I've read a few pages of this thread, but what other albums do you guys recommend? I gather Low and Ziggy are pretty well regarded. What else?

You truly cannot go wrong with any of his '70s albums, extending out to his '80 release Scary Monsters.

I'd recommend Hunky Dory, Station to Station, and Aladdin Sane after you hit the two that you mentioned.

Low and Scary Monsters are my favorites. But the ones LMP mentioned are all essential as well. Laz is a big fan of Lodger as well.

As others have said, all his '70's material is essential, but I also rate both Tin Machine albums very highly, esp, the first, also "Hours" from 1999, and 2002's Heathen are well worth a listen, and, even though Tonight was one of his worst efforts, the opening track, Loving The Alien is pure Bowie gold.
Christ, nearly forgot, 1993's Buddha Of Suburbia, criminally overlooked, but another classic!

Haven't read the entire thread, but how is David live? Has anyone here seen him in concert before?

Many times, in a word, BRILLIANT, but it looks as though you might not get a chance to see him again, hasn't toured since his heart problem back in 2004, has only made brief live appearances since, and there appears to be no sign of any new material coming out in the near future, he seems to have gone into early retirement, unfortunately, still, at least U2 are still out there, imo the only group who can compare to his live show.

Spin magazine recently voted nirvana's coer of tmwstw the best cover of all time, personally speaking I wouldn't even call it the best cover of that song, Lulu's cover from 1974 is a far superior version, IMO.

Fingers on both hands and all my toes are crossed for him being one of the headliners at next year's Glastonbury festival. Come on Bowie, return to the live stage in triumphant fashion!

I was wondering the same thing. My friend is trying to get me to put a deposit down on tickets for next year, and that would be very, VERY persuasive.

Are there any indications to give you such hope that Bowie might be returning?

Not really other than he is the bookies favourite along with Rolling Stones at the moment. His name has been thrown around as a possibility for quite a while now though.

The Stones playing would serve to dissuade me from going. The last thing I want to see at a festival is 70 year-old Mick Jagger strutting around in front of a creaky jukebox.
