Thought about attaching a :( icon to the thread title, but figured it might be overkill.

So, carry on talking about the new track, or talk about the upcoming album instead and pretend ETIAW never happened like I'm doing.

GAF mentioned this yesterday, but it has apparently become a thing:

I'm not sure what would possess them to "intentionally" steal from that song. You would think a rock band would be loathe to accept responsibility for this, like an adolescent trying to explain away porn to his mother. They broke the mold after they made Chris Martin and Bono.

I've only heard the song in pretty low quality via You Tube and through my phone speakers. Pales next to Violet Hill. I really enjoy the first half of the song, love Martin's vocal, but the whole thing gets too bombastic and goes for at least 30 seconds too long in my reckoning. I suspect this could be a standalone single, I don't see how it could work on an album to be honest.

They are apparently not going to make a music video for this song, according to a report on Coldplaying.com. A shame, because this song is crying out for a video, and I don't think that the song alone will generate the commercial appreciation that Coldplay management would be hoping for.

Really excited by those new tracks. Thanks, Nirniva. They sound like...

Parachutes era Coldplay, especially Us Against The World, which reminds me of a cross between Spies and Till Kingdom Come. Charlie Brown is fairly generic Coldplay, but has a strong chorus and overall structure. Major Minor is really interesting musically; I hear some hints of The XX and Florence + The Machine in there, but I don't really hear a hook of any kind. I'm even less sure now how ETIAW will fit into the rest of the album.

That's a damn shame. Coldplay is stellar at videos, perhaps because they realize they're the most awkward band in the world on camera and elect not to dominate their own videos.

Charlie Brown is fairly decent and not very excitement inducing for me, Us Against the World I found to be somewhat boring and lacking. But once again, I really hope there's more of Major Minus on the album. That is what they should be doing.

They have me feeling better. Thanks for posting. Major Minus in particular sounds really good. Almost edgy, even.

Hopefully Teardrop won't be on the album.

doesn't that happen to you with most music though? it is very, very rare that I hear a piece of music and it sticks in my head after just one listen, even if I liked it. Destroyer's album is a case in point. it's my AOTY so far, but it took me at least three listens before any of the songs stuck in my mind.

That's very true, but it has not generally been my experience with Coldplay. The songs of theirs that I like clicked with me pretty much from the start, the songs that left me underwhelmed on the first few listens never grew on me that much later. The appeal of their music, to me, has been quite simple and immediate - I don't think they're that good at songs that unfold with repeated listenings.

Didn't mind ETIAW, but now listening to these other new songs like Charlie Brown (absolutely  it!) makes you realise the layers of class that waterfall is lacking!

Either way it's good to have another band I enjoy to follow the setlists of for a while haha

Just listened to Teardrop again, and god damn that intro reminds me of the intro to Underworld's Born Slippy.

Coldplay's sets on VLV were far more static than U2's on this tour.

This album has potential with some of these new songs. But Every Teardrop is quite underwhelming, pretty much all because of Martin.

These new tracks sound great, including ETIAW (even if it sounds too similar to Ritmo de la Noche) - the only full Coldplay album(s) that I've liked is Viva La Vida / Prospekt's March, but I think Live 2003 doesn't count. Other than that, I hope the next album is a good one.
