The photographs used on the cover of the Crocodiles were taken by photographer Brian Griffin.[2] Griffin took a series of pictures of the band in woods near Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire at night and which show themes of introspection, despair and confusion.[9] Describing the picture used on the front cover of the album, music journalist Chris Salewicz said, "[...] the Bunnymen are placed in poses of histrionic despair in a near-neurotically gothic woodland that evokes memories of elfin glades and fabled Arthurian legends."

"OK, guy up front. You're probably the lead singer, so let's have you straddle the tree and stare into the gap the limbs create to show that you are desirable to women and/or good in bed. Second guy from the front, you sit and stare straight ahead as if you're too damaged and nihilistic to survive without the adoration of the female portion of your target demographic. Third guy, you look down as if you just crashed your father's car. Kids can relate to that. Guy in the back, probably the drummer, you stare ponderously, as if you are creating in your mind an Arthurian legend that you will act out as soon as you break away from the oppressive chains of your parents and society as a whole.

Let's do this. Is the black construction paper holding up?"
