Lo-Fi for the Dividing Nights is the name of a 10-track EP that will accompany select copies of Broken Social Scene's new album, Forgiveness Rock Record. According to the band's site, the EP will be given to those who pre-order the new album, as well as those who purchase CD and vinyl copies at independent record stores in the U.S. and HMV in Canada.

The EP is filled with "soundscapes" recorded by various BSS members during the making of the new album at producer John McEntire's Soma Studios. Forgiveness Rock Record is out May 4 in North America via Arts & Crafts (May 3 in Europe via City Slang/Cooperative Music). NPR is streaming the whole thing now.

Pitchfork: Broken Social Scene Release Bonus EP

:)

Very cool.

.....though I don't think I've ever listened to the bonus EP that came with the last BSS album in its entirety...

It'll be interesting to see what format this EP comes in. On my self-titled LP, EP To Be You And Me is just the entire D side. Wonder if they'll do that this time or just include it as a CD,download, or (please please please) a 10".

All to All is so good it hurts.

You said it. My clear favorite after two runs through. Might change, might not.

Oh yeah, and they'll be playing "Forced to Love" on Letterman Thursday according to one of their tweets.

I just noticed this on their site when pre-ordering it tonight:

A unique PIN code will be sent to all pre-order customers on May 3rd to download the digital EP one day early.

Maybe it will be download only? Maybe not.

I think that just means you'll get to download it early. Surely it'll get some sort of physical release like the last one (two if you include Beehives), no?

Actually, I just noticed this as well:

I finally watched their performance on Letterman, and am now even more excited for the album.

well this band is playing at a festival i'm going to in July/August. i've heard World Sick and thought it was just about the best thing i've heard this year, so needless to say i'll get the album. but that and song called Ibi, i think, are the only ones i've heard.

so is there a particular album that enamours you all so?

As I mentioned before, You Forgot It In People is still my favorite of theirs, but both it and the self-titled album are great. It's difficult to recommend one over the other, they both seem fairly necessary if you want to know what they'll be playing live.

You Forgot It In People is much better IMO, but a band with only two or three albums tends to draw from all of them live. Best to check out both.

They sorta do, but those are the only two that matter for the most part (and have been officially released).

Both albums are required if you're going to get into the band. And don't miss Feel Good Lost, either. Don't rush it since no tracks will make it onto a setlist, but don't miss it.

I'm a huge proponent of the self-titled; it's probably in my top five or ten albums of all-time. You Forgot It In People is pretty fantastic too.

If you pre-ordered the album, check your email. You've got download codes....

Pretty much the same score "they" gave the last album. Good to see they gave it Best New Music as well. Looking forward to listening to it (and the EP) tomorrow at work.

It's a damn shame how overlooked The New Pornographers' newest album has been in light of the NASH/SOC/LCD trio. It's terrific, as good as any of those.

That said, Forgiveness Rock Record is just...it's a joy. I don't know what else to call it. Listening to it makes me extraordinarily happy, and the best tracks rank with their very best. It's disjointed, as always, but so much fun. I don't have fun listening to the self titled, or a good chunk of You Forgot It In People, for that matter. I'm glad they made this record. It needed to be done.
