AFI (The band, not the film academy, stupid)

New AFI album is due out sometime this fall.

Lead single "I Hope You Suffer" available now on their website and will be available to purchase on the 23rd:

AFI | Official Site

Song is satisfyingly dark, and seems to be comprised of a lot of the music they've been teasing on the site for the last few months. It's still a little poppy, but I'll take this over most of the stuff on Crash Love.

I'm so excited to see these guys again in September. They were one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

The night I saw AFI live is a night I'll never forget. Incredible show.

Love the new single and new aesthetic. They're clearly taking a backward step from the overly commercial Crash Love, and I welcome it. Not a gold microphone in the house.

I was already looking forward to the new song, but this is even better than I was hoping. Pretty sweet.

EDIT: Here's a Youtube link of the song as well:

Thanks

Yeah, the more I hear it, the happier I am. I turned it on while I made some eggs in the kitchen and I found myself singing along, even though it was only the second time I'd heard it, so that's probably a good thing.

I think I've probably mentioned this on the site before, but I always really loved their song "Girl's Not Grey". I remember hearing it on the radio years ago and it was one of those distinct radio moments where I stopped and thought "I have to find out who this band is."

Unfortunately, I've never heard anything else by them that I like nearly as much as that song.

That's a really great song. Probably very close to, if not, my favorite song of theirs.

I hadn't heard it in a long time until a few months ago when I listened to it with LeMel (his first listen). I had definitely forgot how good an album it is.

Really, I enjoy everything I've heard of theirs besides....:shudder: Crash Love.

I actually enjoyed Crash Love when it came out, because it seemed like they were trying to make an album that strayed away from the mold. Davey even tried to change how he sang (which sorta seems like has held over onto this new song as well, which I think is a great thing). That said, there's only one song on the entire album I ever go back to (Darling, I Want To Destroy You), and I honestly can't even remember what the other songs sound like. It certainly turned into the album of theirs that stuck with me the least.

I had a mini-celebration and went on a huge AFI kick in March for Sing the Sorrow's tenth anniversary. That record is very special to me.

As for Crash Love, I couldn't quite get into it when it came out. I heard/read somewhere that Davey was forced by doctors to change his singing style (no more screaming) because it was damaging his vocal cords. I was sad to see that aspect of his singing go.

But not long ago, my sister asked me to make her an AFI mix, and I was determined to find some songs off Crash Love that would work for it. Besides Medicate and Beautiful Thieves, I found that Cold Hands is a really great song. It's got a touch of that electronic feel from Decemberunderground and, for me, helps bridge the gap between the two albums. Crash Love is still a record I need to spend more time with (because I know it's better than I think), and I probably will now that they have a new album coming out. I always like to binge on old stuff before the new stuff arrives.

Also, B212, if you have never seen their I Heard a Voice concert DVD, you should check it out. One of my most watched band DVDs for sure, and lots of screamy Davey.

That would be cool, I'll check that out.

What I remember about Crash Love (besides the extreme disappointment), was that "Medicate" was...alright and..."Veronica Lawyer Smokes"? Was terrible...I think that's the one.

Completely agree about Veronica Sawyer Smokes. It takes a lot of effort to get past that song and not turn the whole damn thing off.

Medicate to me was always Miss Murder Redux. The way that the bridge goes all quiet and then builds back up, almost like the song is coming to a stop after the second chorus...too similar. But I used to hear Medicate on the radio a lot, so it grew on me and I like it well enough.

I think I'm getting to the point where I can no longer consider ten years to be a very long period of time, lest it makes me feel like I've gotten quite old. Holy shit.

I like the art of drowning, black sails the sunset, and sing the sorrow a lot. The earlier stuff Ive heard a bit of, but most of it just isn't as good. I think I listened to decembuerunderground once, didnt love it as much as sing the sorrow, and that was it. Have some catching up to do, apparently. Song the Sorrow is just as great as I remember it being from the last time I listened to it, though (yikes, it's probably been five or so years).
