I didn't include U2, that would be cheating. But come to think of it, U2 were great between '89 and '95 too!

Every single one of those is a slice of pure sonic brilliance, and I could easily post another 300.

I honestly don't think there's been a better period for music, in my lifetime.

I tend to agree, in certain moods. Not necessarily about all the songs above, but about the general time period. I also should mention 'Last Train to Transcentral' by the KLF.

Props for not mentioning any grunge (TM) bands. Nirvana were a good band, but that whole 'movement' looks more and more irrelevant in retrospect.

HADDAWAY? You're kidding, right?

I remember loving that "Move Any Mountain" song back in college.

I like St. Etienne - are they still putting out music?

Of all the REM songs to choose from during that stretch, you chose Man on the Moon and Country Feedback?

That would be correct. I did indeed choose those particular aforementioned songs of all the REM songs from that particular period.

Well, I did pick a song by Hole and a song by Alice in Chains.

I don't dislike Nirvana, or Pearl Jam, for that matter, I just think there was better stuff made in that period, including within the grunge genre.

I honestly think that song by Hole is better than anything Nirvana put out, though I assume it was very much inspired by Cobain's memory, or whatever.

Taste in music is pretty individual, ultimately.

Well I think that Haddaway song is a great single.

I don't know about St Etienne. Would assume they are still releasing music.

I blame that SNL "head bopping skit" (if anyone posts a Youtube of it, I will kick them in the shins; seriously - there's no need for it here) for ruining the song.

But I have more than my fair share of great pop/dance singles that I love, so I hear you.

I don't know many of the songs there by name but I'm guessing I'd know more when I get around to listening to them. I agree though, the period from 1989-1995 for me is the best period in music. Acts like U2, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alanis Morrissette, Smashing Pumpkins, Templ Of The Dog, Soundgarden, Blind Melon, Cranberries, all around and at their best.

And I agree with the two choices you picked for R.E.M. Man on the Moon is the R.E.M. song I'd pick if I had to choose one song to define them(certainly to define early 90's R.E.M.) and Country Feedback is one of their best. Especially the live version you've chosen.

Do you want me to make a second thread for 1966-1976? I don't think the forum could handle it without crashing.

Neither can be worth giving up Revolver and Pet Sounds among others from 66.

Plus, by 1977, prog rock was at its nadir, and punk rock was at its beginnings, which has never been one of my favorite genres. For me, it's definitely '66-'76.

Actually since I posted that I thought about the second half of the 70's through first half of the 80's and I think 1975-1985 is actually the best period of music. I'd give up the Beatles, Doors, Hollies, Beach Boys and others for a time that I'd consider the most creative and featuring the greatest period of mainstream and underground music.

I love you.

1998-2008 had 2008, which is the best year in all of music ever. However, U2 sold out in 1998. Hmm...quite the conundrum.

Ridiculous.

The time period had some great music, no argument, but not worth giving up the Beatles, Zep, Doors, Who, Floyd, Beach Boys, Stones, Hendrix, etc. Not by a long shot.

Some of the Zeppelin's best songs came from 1975 and after. Floyd's best albums came 1975 and after (Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut).

Damn straight.

Excepting the asses at Pitchfork who think that Brian Wilson was the only truly good thing to come out of the 60's, it's pretty much unanimous that the mid 60's to the mid 70's was the greatest period for popular music thus far.
