She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we're better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today

You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)

She knows just what she's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth

She's not waiting on a saviour to come
She's at the bus-stop with News of the World and the Sun
Sun, here it comes
She's not waiting for anyone

You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)

She don't care what it's worth
But she's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth

Slipping away
Would you believe in something
Would you believe in someone

Slip slide
She lets me
Slipping away

Would you believe in something
Would you believe in someone

The world turns
And we get dizzy
Slipping away

Would you believe in something
Would you believe in someone

She's living, living next week now
You know she's going to pay it back somehow
She hasn't been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon then she'll sleep

You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)
You got to give it away
(You got to give it away)

She already knows it hurts
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth
Last night on earth
Last night...

:scream: :scream:

Well ... I really like this song! One of my favourties on Pop!

I see it as this girl who can see what's happening to the world, how it's all going downhill, but she knows what's around the corner (the last night on Earth). She sees everyone else not realising that it's nearly the end, so she hangs on to what she believes herself.

"She's not waiting on a saviour to come
She's at the bus-stop with News of the World and the Sun
Sun, here it comes
She's not waiting for anyone"

I like this verse. I feel it's saying she doesn't have to wait for her Saviour because she's already found Him in this depressing world. Maybe she's not waiting for anyone because she knows everyone else is already lost? It's like a personal journey for her, she sees herself as one person standing out ready for the end of the world.

That's a pretty poor interpretation, but *meh* I like to think what I like! :D

right.
Just her and an audience of one.:eyebrow:
Yes. It's a wonderful song.
'The more you "take"
the less you feel'--about love, I think.
Spending it on ourselves (selfishness)

altho
I don't know how 'the less you know, the more you believe' fits in.

& don't understand 'the more you have, the more it takes today'. Maybe how distracted you are with past regrets/sins that are essentially gone--but you may not be experienceing the relief--which points us (once again) to the Saviour:ohmy: I'm quite relieved to be practicing communion more frequently. Now, if only they'd get those kneeling 'things'. under the pews.
I suppose I should become a member.
Maybe they'd listen to me.

This should probably be in "It's a musical Journey" but anywho...

I've always seen this song slightly different. I see it as somewhat spiritual song, but in a heartbreaking manner. I see the subject as someone who's not confident in her beliefs, she's not confident in her place in the world. She's living a life that's out of control, part of her knows that, but part of her is giving up. The singer of the song sees this and is trying to help.

"She feels the ground is giving way
But she thinks we're better off that way
The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today"

She notices the chaos of the world. She's self medicating. "The more you take the less you feel." And she begins to build a tolerance. "The more you have the more it takes today."

"You got to give it away"

The singer's telling her she needs to change her ways.

"She knows just what she's worth
She's living like it's the last night on earth
The last night on earth"

She's feeling worthless, so she begins to throw away her life.

"She's not waiting on a saviour to come
She's at the bus-stop with News of the World and the Sun
Sun, here it comes
She's not waiting for anyone"

She's not turning to anyone. She's stubborn and she's doing this by herself.

Slipping away
Would you believe in something
Would you believe in someone

The singer's approaching her again...reaching out to her.

"The world turns
And we get dizzy
Slipping away"

The girl and the singer drift further apart.

"She's living, living next week now
You know she's going to pay it back somehow
She hasn't been to bed in a week
She'll be dead soon then she'll sleep"

She'll be paying for the reckless life she's living very soon.

But this is just my interpretation.

I understand it as a song song about economics, escapism and justice.

"She feels the ground if giving way"...always living on the edge, living as if there is no future, no tomorrow. As we do, we consume only thinking about the present.

"She's not waiting on a saviour to come"...same vein, only thinking about here and now.

"She's at the bustop with the news of the world an the sun"...happily distracted by the gossip and bullshit of the day, escapist.

"You gotta give it away"...sell everything and follow me, to paraphrase Jesus.

iacrobat, that's a different bent:drool: but I like it. Something to ponder.

Escapism, escapism...where will it take us?

Perhaps we should talk of entertainment...same difference.

This is my favorite song from POP and one of U2's best live song IMO. I love to watch it from my Pop Mart tape. Larry's drumming is just very..... heavy!:macdevil: I love it!!! And what a bass riff!!

"The more you take the less you feel
The less you know the more you believe
The more you have the more it takes today"

That's to me one of Bono's best lyrics ever. It's very good, I love this philosophic apocalyptic kind of songs!!!! I really, really, really, really hope they bring this song back one day. Maybe on this next tour since this album is going to be such a rocker (THANK GOD!)! That would be just amazing!!!
